Back when I watched the show in the 70's, pretty much everyone on the show was poor. Well, Mr. Hooper owned and ran a small store.

They should have a republican muppet that tries to kill him. You know you gotta simplify the message for the kids...

Yeah, but if they modified his attitude to reflect the message, people would be screaming about it. The same thing happened when idiots got upset that Cookie Monster had a song called "Cookies Are a Sometimes Food."

Can't kids just have a happy childhood anymore without being burdened by all the world's problems?

What's next, suicide bomber muppet?

/was "food insecure" for a while as a kid. Fortunatly, no one ever told me and I didn't know it until much after the fact.

God, I remember a time when I saw a commercial about people in this country needing food donations. At the time, I foolishly thought "give me a break, how could *anyone* go hungry in the US? This must be a scam".

Man, either I was incredibly naive, or we are just hitting really unbelievable new lows in this country.

This makes me very, very sad.

big pig peaches: Can't kids just have a happy childhood anymore without being burdened by all the world's problems?

Kids find seeing "people like them" on television to be high gratifying and fulfilling.

As it stands now, many poor kids don't have much more than basic cable at best (and I'm tlaking basic cable, not basic expanded with like 70 channels -- i'm talking what I have by choice: the networks, disney channel, pbs, and cspan). Seeing someone who is poor and says things that they can relate to? That's golden.

Particularly on a show like Sesame Street.

I grew up when Cookie Monster was all "om nom nom" on the cookies and I had no issues stopping myself from eating a whole bag of Chips Ahoy. I am guessing all these "serious issues" and "informative messages" are just to shut up the parents who are convinced their child is a genius and can pick up on every subtle clue TV spits at them. If a kid is watching SS, they are probably around 3-4 years old and most kids just want puppets who talk funny, bright colors and silly jokes and songs.

We have many more poor now because those who are are one paycheck away from *becoming* poor have been convinced that they are the "haves" and that there's some nefarious folks out there who want to legislate them into being "have nots". The result being that the majority of conservatives in this country consistently vote against their own self-interest.

/meanwhile, the real "haves" are laughing all the way to the bank
//inb4 "class warfare"
///when we start seeing vainqueurs carrying around heads on pikes, *then* it's class warfare

"don't even tell me how to get to Sesame Street, that is a terrible place! I wouldn't go there if I knew the way. Who would wanna live in a neighbourhood like that? farkin', six foot pigeons walkin' around. They got an elephant that's junky. "Hi Bird!" Ya, that's right! Snuffy! "Hi, Bird, I'm sick. I need some smack, Bird!" Then Cookiemoster, with his eyes poppin' out of his head! "Cookie, cookie, cookie!" Uh... what kinda cookies are you talkin' about? Chocolate chips don't do that to people! And then they have the nerve to put a pimp on there! Now, they don't come out and say he's a pimp, but I know a pimp when I see one! They called him the Count. He's got a cape and everything! "Where is my money? You've been late 4 times, I've been counting. How many times must I smack you before you act right? One--two! Two smacks!"

I remember MAD Magazine doing a Sesame Street parody when I was a kid. Different version of it. My favorite was Mafia Street. I can still remember the lyrics to their theme.

Pushing drugs
filling some creep with slugs
goons and thugs
and places where bosses meet...

these are things we got right here, got right here on Mafia Street.

I know it's not really relevant
