Quickster is by far the stupidest name I've ever heard.

That said, I've been wanting a service that would combine Netflix DVDs and Gamefly, so I might be interested.

As the submitter hinted at, I really won't be interested in their streaming end...I can normally find those items on my own...

Agreed.

The wife and I are dumping the disc option and sticking with streaming only.

I'll probably do the same. I just finally sent back the DVD that I've kept for about 2 years (and didn't watch) so I can cancel my disc option.

So can I, but it's a non-trivial task to get them onto a TV, at least compared to using a set-top box or game console.

Yes, because it's absolute genius to take two libraries that you could previously search concurrently to find out if something would be available immediately or later that week, and separate them so you have to search twice.

Idiots.

I don't know. Why would you take the most successful entertainment model around and deliberately fark it up? All I can think of is that the disc delivery side of the business is costing them money so theyre looking for a way to amputate it.

Quickster: I assure you we're OPEN !!!

The two sites will be autonomous, though, so if you need to change your payment information, for example, you'll have to do it twice.

So they are going to make it even harder for customers to keep both services/easier to drop either streaming or DVD? I don't get it. Why are they purposefully trying to make it easier for their customers to go elsewhere?

I work in publishing and even though our treatises are available online and we offer some as e-books that can be downloaded to a Kindle, iPad etc. we still physically print our treatises as there is still a market for them and will be for the foreseeable future. Separating the physical from the electronic would be a big waste of time and money and make it easier for our competitors to snatch those dollars.

Yes, I'm sure Comcast will be separating their services to follow Netlix's bold move. Uh-huh.

Netflix will go down in business history as a successful company that suicided itself.

Step 1: Raise rates 60% and don't send emails to your customers letting them know this information until days after it is reported everywhere else.

Step 2: When they complain tell them they will get over it

Step 3: Lose millions of subscribers and see your profits drop like a rock

Step 4: Apologize for being a dumbass, then prove you are still a dumbass by shooting yourself in the head and saying "Netflix is now dead as far as DVDs go, now we're Qwikster and you can get video games too....if you give us more money. You guys don't mind having to deal with two different companies and two different websites, and not being able to choose streaming or disk on one website right? So we're cool right? Good."

They'll sell off Quikster within a year to keep Netflix afloat.

Fark Netflix.

2011-09-19 11:47:17 AM
my boy sielwolf skewered this on G+. Netflix/Quickster/buck-grab-ster is totally going down the tubes (*the intertubes, to be specific).

I'm streaming only now on Netflix (*thanks to HBO Go, which SUCKED to begin with but I think they're no longer serving from a cablemodem... they might have actual servers now) but I've lost faith. I think I'll have to get something else, in addition (hulu+, amazon prime... not sure, still in the research phase)

And this hasn't bolstered me at all.

I actually like this, I am tired of searching for something for it to pull up dvds that I don't have a subscription for. It's good for me, bad for you (I guess). I would be nice if they had the option to search both sites if you have a subscription to both though.

I have both issues with Streaming Netflix. Some times its a, "Oh, this might look interesting" but half the time, its a movie I want to see and its only DvD! I hate that and them taking movies / shows off the streaming list and making them only for DvD rental (Looking at you Sparticus!)

2011-09-19 11:50:30 AM
So this is their way of putting a positive spin on the amount of subscribers they're losing? Netflix is fine, it's Quikster that people are canceling!

lately I've mostly been finding things I'll settle for.

I've been using redbox to rent the new stuff but netflix is running out of things I want to see.

Ok, I can see why they are trying to split the DVD and Streaming revenue streams. They see DVD as being of limited/decreasing value, and wish to sell off that line of business while it still has value.

What I do not see is:
1) Why they would rename their ORIGINAL product to something with no ties to either the company or the original product.
2) How they came to the name quickster. The CEO has a writeup, in which he cites the quick turnaround, but its a stretch. Even if the genesis of the name is understood, its still a sucky suck suck suck name. How about NetFlixDisc or AirDisc by Netflix. Anything but Quickster.

^This^. If you go in thinking "I wanna watch Transformers 3!" and then find that it's not there, you'll be disappointed.

But I can go on Instantwatcher.com right now and easily find 10 titles that I want to watch.

Or even failing that, they still have every freaking episode of Star Trek available (including TAS, and DS9 next month).

/Gamera is really neat
//Gamera is full of meat

They aren't doing this because they feel like it. Their costs have gone up (or are about to) considerably. They were able to work some pretty sweet deals with some studios and the postal service early on, but both of those entities are asking for a lot more money. And competition is swooping in with exclusive studio deals, which makes Netflix (er.... qwikstr) an endangered species.

Being able to filter is fine and something they should do, completely separating the services is dumb.

There are enough options that the latter is almost always possible. If I ever look for anything specific, though, it's either DVD only or not in their catalog at all.

You sound picky.

2011-09-19 11:54:44 AM
It seems like the demise of the video store and this colossal cock-up on Netflix's part can only serve to increase good old fashioned torrent pirating, since options are rapidly running out for consumers who want to indulge in media content at home. And honestly, who can you blame for that?

/yarrrr

2011-09-19 11:54:53 AM
I'm switching to that other service....what's it called....you know that one that used to have brick and mortar stores around town.....buster something.

2011-09-19 11:55:42 AM
Easy choice then.... dvd only. Blu-ray is available often, and the streaming side is too limited to care about. It was a nice "extra".

2011-09-19 11:55:46 AM
I dumped Netflix streaming completely in favor of the Amazon service that comes with my Amazon Prime subscription. Has most of the same stuff along with the ability to get current TV seasons (like Itunes). Also plugs right into my ROKU just like Netflix. Amazon Prime really is one of the best deals around.

2011-09-19 11:56:26 AM
Just cancelled everything I didn't cancel last time.
