A 10 year old should not ride a bike to school. She should walk, like we did at that age. Uphill. Both ways.

2011-09-01 3:35:01 PM
really surprised by the lack of "0bummer" comments.

2011-09-01 3:35:41 PM
Guess that depends on the area that 1 mile goes through and traffic.

I wouldn't ride 1 mile down some of the roads I take to work even as an adult on bike, much less a kid.

2011-09-01 3:42:25 PM
When I got to the part where the copy says "the area is not safe" and mom replied "how does he know my daughter better than I do" it was immediately clear that mom should be spanked.

BAILEY: "He sees the child crest the hill, she starts over the top of the hill on Cedar Avenue, a car comes from behind her and has to swerve over."

THAT'S WHAT CARS ARE SUPPOSED TO DO!

(2)The operator of a motor vehicle, when overtaking and
passing a bicycle proceeding in the same direction on the
roadway, shall leave a safe distance between the motor
vehicle and the bicycle of not less than three feet (3')
and shall maintain the clearance until safely past the
overtaken bicycle.

Last Wednesday, an Elizabethton Police officer put his car in park and waited on the school bus parked in front of him.
BAILEY: "The child goes into oncoming traffic, and goes around the school bus, and around his vehicle."
Chief Matt Bailey says the officer watched a car stop to avoid running her over. The next day, the officer saw that girl again.

ok, it sounds like maybe she needs a ticket for cutting that car off, but what are you doing parking a school bus and a police car in such a way that they block a whole lane of traffic?

2011-09-01 4:09:09 PM
Wow, what kind of backwoods hicks are these that the roads they're talking about don't even have Google Street View yet? You expect a bunch of savages like that to care about bike rights?

Pure speculation on my part, but the bus could have stopped to let children get off.

Helping children get off, huh? Hmm, sounds like the cop's got bigger issues to deal with....

I figure they would have used the word "stop" instead of "park" in that case though. But if that's what they meant... Give the girl a ticket for passing the school bus while it was letting kids off (I'm assuming that's illegal everywhere). And um, don't say that the other vehicle stopped because of her, because it would have had to stop for the bus too.

The comments after the TFA are interesting

2011-09-01 5:55:09 PM
Ya... this is a non-story. The kid either didn't follow road rules or the road is just not safe for a bicycle.

Of course, many will just get all pissy and say that da gub'ments trying to take dem babies away from der mama.

Article: "this time the officer stopped the child, put her inside his cruiser, and drove her home."

Trolltastic Headline: "arrested"

2011-09-01 6:22:29 PM
Err... nobody was arrested and DCS has not opened an investigation. Why exactly is this a news story?

2011-09-01 6:23:27 PM
There are certainly some nuances to this story that are interesting but what I want to know is this: How did that mother get knocked up and who was the guy who had the stomach for the job?

2011-09-01 6:23:35 PM
This never would have happened if she were homeschooled.

2011-09-01 6:24:14 PM
Citizens,

Your children are in danger from perverts and deviants. Your religious beliefs and security is being threatened by people of another, uncivilized religion, your jobs are threatened by dark skinned people of a culture different than yours. Fear these things Citizens. Know that the only proper response is to put more and more power and control in our hands. Do not bother thinking, do not bother worrying on these things. Watch the news where the media we control will continue to tell you how awful it is and how much more you should give in to governmental control. It is for your own good.

Carry on,
Your Government

The horror that some people may have different levels of risk acceptance.

My problem is that too often CPS declares the level of risk to be zero, thereby granting themselves jurisdiction into pretty much any situation.

The officer told Teresa Tryon her daughter should not ride to and from school unsupervised -- that the roads have too much traffic and too little sidewalk to be safe.

The officer is telling her to ride on the sidewalk?

aka breaking the law.

I thought it was technically illegal to ride on the sidewalk officer. Also PUT IN farkIN SIDEWALKS!!!! SOME people like to walk, and others like to ride their bike to work without the constant fear of being killed.

My boss tells me the story, and her daughter verified, that at 12 they let her drive to school, they lived in the boonies and the trip was almost all on farm land but hey, no one died.

The officer told Teresa Tryon her daughter should not ride to and from school unsupervised -- that the roads have too much traffic and too little sidewalk to be safe.

Possible multiple fail on the cop.

Riding to and from school, unsupervised? Oh the horrors! Seems to be one of those people who think kids should be supervised at all times when not locked inside playing xbox.

too little sidewalk? Contrary to popular belief, the sidewalk is worse for safety.

Now...I don't know the specifics of these roads and traffic. And we don't know this kids skill level.
But a blanket statement of "it's too dangerous for a kid on a bike" is not necessarily true. Some people fully believe that anything more than a 100 yard cul-de-sac is too dangerous for anyone on a bike. Some of them are cops.

TERESA TRYON, mother: "I don't allow her to ride in the dark or in inclement weather conditions."

Because nothing kills snowflakes quicker than dihydrogen monoxide exposure.

so since the cop can neither arrest the girl or mother and wants to have his way he just reports them to child services.

jack booted thugs rejoice.

Get off my lawn moment:

They would have to had arrested half of my grade school and Jr. High. Looking at Giggle maps, I show that my bicycle commute in Jr. High was almost exactly one mile, most of it down a busy street in our home town. No helmets. No problems, either.

We have a child obesity epidemic. Coincidence?

Of course, most schools resemble prisons nowadays. I drove past said Jr. High not too long ago and it was surrounded by 10 foot iron wrought fencing, all around. My father refers to them as the local gulags.

/80s kid, lots of freedom, suburbia was great

It sounds like the people in the community need to know about bikers' rights. It also sounds like the little girl needs to learn that rules for operating her bicycle on the streets. She needs to know that she needs to follow the same laws as an automobile. It will put her ahead of the game when she gets her driver's licence.

2011-09-01 6:36:59 PM
So instead of making this an opportunity to create a healthy, walkable neighborhood they decide to just tell the kids to shuddup and get fat? Yup, sounds like a red state.

I tend to disagree when I'm riding on the feeder road of a 12 lane freeway during rush hour in a major metropolitan area. I'll stay on the sidewalks or ride through the grass, thank you.

Right; now a child that has been allowed some independence and is getting exercise and her mother are being harrassed. Why are children obese and lack self sufficiency?
Extreme bullsh*t.

Hey idjit, bicycle brakes, particularly those on a kid's bike, are almost useless in the rain. They're pure hand-strength powered, and a 10 year old girl isn't going to have enough of that to counter for the rain-slick bike rims. Even as an adult, you're stupid if you go biking when it's wet and don't have a V-brakes or better.
