Personally I swear by Berocca. Has the added benefit of giving you that funky luminescent piss.

I once heard a story, which I now take to be an urban myth, that in South Africa you can buy the most amazing hangover cure. Apparently it comes in the form of a little pink tablet that you take just before you go to bed, replacing all the lost vitamins etc. When you wake up you feel right as rain. However,so effective is this tablet that it has been banned by the UK Government, otherwise everyone would be going to work still half-cut.

Has anyone else heard about this?

Best hangover cure?
2003-09-03 11:05:17 AM

V-8 Rocks nads! Works for me every time. Only bad hangover I ever really had was capped off with my roomate taking the most horrible stank shiat. Stunk up the whole house. The combo of shiat stank and my hangover made me dry heave for hours. Did I mention that I had brats/sauerkraut and about 15 shots of jose?

/ended up puking in a brand new pair of shoes.

After a night of heavy drinking, an hour before going to bed start drinking water. I drink 2-3 litres and I'm good for the next day.

I had 15 beers two saturdays ago, drank water and I was fine the next morning.
2003-09-03 11:06:52 AM

not herad of a south african one, but here (nederland) in the so called 'smart shops' they sell after eeze and the like, which is basically a herbal comedown tablet cure for clubbers who take Yokes, but is effective on hangovers if you had a really heavy session, as it contains vitamins, minerals, a relaxant and a asprin type thingy. They smell like elephant shiate though.

Dr. Nick:

What exactly is irn bru? Give us the recipie, I want to see if Scotsmen have the right idea when it comes to hangover cures.
2003-09-03 11:13:11 AM

Sounds like half hooey to me...
2003-09-03 11:18:02 AM
I'm a bit late here to share my words of wisdow but I will anyway.

Best cure for hangover = not getting up!
2003-09-03 11:20:48 AM

Dry heaves are the worst. I'd rather throw up for an hour than dry heave. I wish that I would have known about the V-8 "cure" a few years ago...I drank so many shot of Tequilla and whatever else and many beers. I was hungover for days!

/Still can't touch Southern Comfort...first thing I got sick on
2003-09-03 11:21:48 AM
Hangover cure...

Drink 1-2 glasses of water before going to bed, include a couple of advil. Leave a glass of water by the bed for the morning while you are searching for the cat that shiat in your mouth.

In the morning, get your boyfriend (or girlfriend if thats your pursuason) to get you some slidey food (Burger King, White Castle, McDs as a last resort)all while drinking as much water as possible. Take a nap around 1pm and you are golden, ready for another night.

This cure made possible by years of research in Wisconsin schools.

Triple3D: I too have found V8 to be a good bottle to snag while stumbling down the street for the train. Loads of salt (read the sodium content on the back), lots of vitamins and an overall solid serving of natural goodness.

Truthfully, the uncontested hangover cure is a quick suckle on the bong. You will, quite simply, rise above your hangover. That's an hour and a half to slam down water/V8/scrambled eggs, multivatimins, etc. The assumption of course is that you're not presenting to the board of directors at 9.
2003-09-03 11:23:48 AM
After a heavy binge of booze, drinking several pints of water before passing out has saved me from many a morning of the otherwise inevitable whimpering fetal position.
2003-09-03 11:25:18 AM
Of course, the hangover many of us have experienced the morning after consuming alcohol is caused partly by dehydration and it can be avoided or at least reduced by drinking a pint of water before retiring to bed.

Side effect of bed-wetting a bonus.

Light beer or a gin and tonic made up to less than 2 per cent alcohol will generally provide a net gain of water.

In the U.S. light beer has MORE alcohol (but less calories).

Periteneum - that is because fat girls have to. Skinny girls do not.

2003-09-03 11:38:05 AM
Let me get this straight. Some people mix Gatorade and EVERCLEAR (only 195 proof), then they get sick, so now they think Gatorade shouldn't be mixed with alcohol.

Talk about your post hoc, ergo propter hoc fallacy.

Zardoz, unfortunatley the recipe for irn bru is a well guarded secret kept by the company/family/manufacturer Barrs, they have been asked many times but swear they will never tell. its basically just a really sweet soft drink that i can't think how to really describe effectively...its orange, but not like orange juice, kinda dark orange...i think it claims to be mixed fruit or something...anyway brit farkers want to help me out here?

anyway its really good, especially when hung over, or when you've been on holiday for ages and come home to Scotland and have a big glass yum

basically a national institution, often referred to as our second national drink after whisky, used to have an advertising campaign that showed the Forth Road Bridge (very cool steel bridge, the same colour as the golden gate bridge)and the tag line was, 'made in Scotland from girders' i swear lots of people ( me included) as kids thought the drink was indeed made of iron (irn) girders hence the orange colour...

babbling too much, and can't find web reference to point you to cause stupid asshat internet is playing up!
2003-09-03 11:43:24 AM
My cousin tried killing herself with a glass of water and 50 sleeping pills. She went into a coma.

Never mix water and sleeping pills, lest you become a vegetable.
2003-09-03 11:44:51 AM
I told u I was hardcore
2003-09-03 11:49:10 AM
keep drinking beer and never go to sleep, that will keep the pseky hangover away
2003-09-03 11:51:28 AM
I had heard the warnings about not mixing Advil (ibuprofen) or Tylenol (acetominophen) with booze, so my personal hangover cure is to drink as much water as I can stomach when I stumble home and throw down a couple of Aleve, and repeat in the morning. I haven't heard of any potential side effects from Aleve (naproxen sodium); has anyone else? If you've never tried Aleve, I highly reccommend it - it lasts a really long time (8 hours at least) and really knocks down my bad headaches, much more so than Advil or Tylenol. The generic substitute seems to work just as well too. I have friends that swear by the Pedialyte cure as well, but it has never worked that well for me. Plus it tastes pretty funky, especially once your stomach has turned for the worse.
2003-09-03 12:11:50 PM
No medication, including aspirin when drinking.

Very hard on liver and kidneys.
2003-09-03 12:13:08 PM
after reading this article i'm confused as hell. then again, i'm drunk off my ass.
2003-09-03 12:15:36 PM
I heard drinking four 8oz glasses of water before you go to bed with a couple asprin will do it. Then again, depending on your degree of drunkeness, you do run a risk of pissing the bed prior to consciousness.

/that's a lot of water
2003-09-03 12:21:58 PM
Dr Nick,
...anyway brit farkers want to help me out here?

I'll try

Irn Bru tastes a little like barley sugars (a kind of boiled sweet), not identical mind you, but thats the nearest thing I can think of to it's taste. Come to think of it, I'm not sure that anyone outside the uk has Barley Sugar either. Anyways, it's very very sweet.
2003-09-03 12:25:47 PM
While you are drinking or just before, take 1000mg of Vitamin C and 400mg of L-Glutamine. Then just before bed, drop another Vitamin C. And be sure to add plenty of water. The Vitamin C will protect your organs from damage and the L-Glutamine helps tackle the way the alcohol is broken down. Oh yeah, taking a Vitamins B-1 and B-6 helps with the body aches as well.

If you get shat-housed you will wake up with a hangover but, it will go away very quickly. If you drink with moderation, you will feel great.
2003-09-03 12:32:31 PM
Smoking pot and being Irish always worked out for me.
note: mornings never work even without the influence of alchohol

BTW, stick to the three wise men for all of your drinking needs. Remember, however, that the captian is the best to fraternize with.

PSA: The three wisemen are jim, jack, and jose, for farkers who do not know. now you know.
2003-09-03 12:36:33 PM
Xanax, Diet Coke, Cheesesteak fries and MTV. Always works for me.

Water is for sissies.

I worked with a guy who used to be in the army. He worked for a while as a medic. He was real popular -- come in early after a night out and he'd hook you up an IV. The fluid was just salt water. It was an instant hangover cure.

PSA: The three wisemen are jim, jack, and jose, for farkers who do not know. now you know.

Actually, the 3 wise-men are Jim, Jack and Johnny. Three whiskeys

i drink milk before going to bed.
breast milk.

good looking web site. i think i'll copy layout.
2003-09-03 01:11:11 PM
Tweezer: Aleve is an nsaid -- in the same family as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc. It will do the same damage to the same organs as the others. However, it is my personal pick when I'm not drinking.
2003-09-03 01:11:49 PM
It also helps to take some extra potassium after drinking to replace what gets depleated when your kidneys go overtime. The missing potassium is one reason your muscles ache after drinking.

Eat some bannanas or take potassium gluconate (a tab or two).
2003-09-03 01:13:49 PM
more on irn bru, thanks ScudEast, yeah i guess kind of like barley sugar...anyway some info on the origins of 'bru' as we often call it...also its from Falkirk where i'm orignially from/born

p.s.you can actually buy irn bru all over the world, but might be hard to find
2003-09-03 01:16:18 PM
i've been tending bar off and on for about 9 years.

gatorade & alcohol will not kill you.
red bull & alcohol will not kill you (actually, it doesn't have as much caffeine as you think).
too much alcohol will kill you.

WAY too much misinformation in this thread.

Actually, what *will* get alcohol to your brain and bloodstream faster is soda (mainly club soda).

Ever have a Mind Eraser? It's named that for a reason. (Kahlua, vodka, and club soda).

I think the best hangover "cure" is milk. When you wake up with that bone crushing thirst, chug a big glass of milk. It serves as food, nutrient, and liquid.

Just don't be cloudy from the night before and drink spoiled milk without paying attention -- I have done this and the results were worse than any hangover I could have ever imagined.
2003-09-03 01:20:39 PM
just drink a couple of glasses of water before bed, a couple of cups of coffee when you get up,and then a fattie. no hangover, no problem.
2003-09-03 01:21:01 PM
PSA: The three wisemen are jim, jack, and jose, for farkers who do not know. now you know.

Jim, Jack, Johnny, and Jose are "Three Hicks and a Spick"

oneplugnickel is right:
red bull & alcohol will not kill you (actually, it doesn't have as much caffeine as you think).

Red Bull gives you its "wings" from a combination of Caffiene, Taurine, B Vitamins, and just plain sugars..
2003-09-03 01:31:21 PM
I personally prefer to call "barley sugar" maltose.

I couldn't find the best ever ad though. It had a picture of an old guy sitting in a big chair, pipe, slippers, fireplace - you know the ones. Sitting there with 2 giant wolfhounds lying in front of them.

The caption:

"I love Irn Bru and so do my biatches!"

That one had a few complaints :)
2003-09-03 03:01:22 PM
chz668: Alcohol and Gatorade can also kill you.

Stupidest thing I've ever heard.
2003-09-03 03:08:07 PM
Getting drunk on home-brewed beer gives you a lower chance of getting a hangover. There is usually residual yeast in the brew that supplies you with extra B vitamins, plus fresh beer contains fewer cogeners, those skunky beer chemicals that contribute to hangovers as well.

Extra water helps. A small glass of OJ and a vitamin pill is an extra help. Staying up as late as possible also helps.

2003-09-03 03:22:37 PM
Hard to believe some farkers didn't understand the article. I thought most folks on here were college students. Guess I was wrong.
2003-09-03 08:02:58 PM
smoking pot is great for hangovers, i think there might be some scientific proof floating around about that too..
2003-09-04 01:30:40 AM
A couple of lines of speed before you go out, u can drink like a fish, have about 2 hours sleep and feel absolutely fine the next day
2003-09-04 01:51:16 AM
Simple solution: carry a measuring cup with you to the john so you know how much fluid you need to replace.

Nasty(er) solution: Think Waterworld.

Only problem with saying that here is that someone will think of it when they're drunk, and go what the hell....
2003-09-04 12:22:15 PM
...and don't think that drinking coffee will help you be less drunken. It has no effect & all you end up with is a wide-awake drunk.

Fruit juices are the way to go to remove alcohol from the system.
