victrin: I am almost in tears. For the first time in my life, I feel like an equal citizen. Thank you New York. Thank you governor Cuomo. Thank you everyone who has fought for my civil rights and human dignity. I finally feel like an equal member of this country. congrats and enjoy, V. Just don't get married. That shiat's for suckers ;)

WhyteRaven74: CurlyGirly: Why do people in homosexual relationships call each other partners instead of boyfriend or girlfriend? Is it a privacy thing or fear of being stereotyped/ridiculed,

I know some who use boyfriend or girlfriend instead of partner, it's mainly a matter of preference is all.

My wife and I have been married for three years, but we have been together for almost twenty. We're straight. We've always used wife/husband, partner, significant other, etc... as interchangeable.

Some of our gay friends seemed to be more comfortable with a term like "partner". But I always thought that was because of the reactions they often received from others when using wife/husband.

The main reason I'm posting here is to join in with the celebration. As a straight man, who has been involved with equal rights issues -off and on- for over thirty years, I think this is great news. Not just for gays, but for all Americans.

slayer199: Antimatter: Actually, marriage has a lot to do with state functions: power of attorney, spousal privilege, inheritance, taxation, child care, etc.

The question is more likely, why is religion involved?

That's what I was getting at in a way. Marriage is traditionally a religious concept, all "marriages" in terms of legality should be civil unions (legally binding). Other than legal reasons, there is no reason for the government to block consenting adult couples (hetero or homosexual) from marrying. Religion should not factor into the legality at all...at least in a free society.

I'm all for removing religion from the entire matter by doing away with the legality of marriage and calling them all civil unions. Either way, gays should have as much right to be legally joined as straight couples.

That is pretty much the way it is in Illinois for us gays. In IL (and NJ), civil unions are exactly like marriage... even heteros can get civil unioned. It really is just a word game here. Gay marriages from other jurisdictions have recognition here too.

I think that any religions marriage should not hold any legal standing. Conversely, a church should have the right to "marry" who ever they want to.

paj: This (R) guy on CNN said there weren't enough exemptions for "small-corporate religious objections." How exactly can a corporation be religious?

My guess is that he is talking about refusing to hire married gays as a religious matter. In states like Indiana, you can fire anyone without cause. However, you get penalized for it when the former employee files for unemployment. There are also a lot of small companies around here that will not hire someone who is obviously non-Christian, which they can do so long as they don't cite it as a reason. Others aggressively promote themselves as Christian in their marketing to make it uncomfortable for undesirables to do business with them.

As far as I can see, he is asking for religious difference to be a declared a lawful reason for discrimination in either hiring or custom.

on their own they don't. You still have to go to town hall and get a marriage license. It's just that the officiant is given the power to sign it. It's a convenience thing rather than having to get your marriage license signed by a judge if you choose to have a religious ceremony.

Uncle Pim: Finally, after 13 years, I can marry my partner.

Congratulations when you do. I hope someday that gay partners will be able to marry in my home state, PA. My former next-door-neighbors were a gay couple. One passed from stomach cancer. It was heartbreaking to see what his partner went through. I know that if I had cancer my wife would be able to do anything she needed. He had to worry and grieve and had the extra bullshiat of not being legally allowed to do squat.

The question was asked upthread, "What do all the activists do now?"

In addition to the gay marriage issue, many of us, gay AND straight, continue to work to reduce/remove the stigma of just BEING gay. My work is with batterers intervention, parenting classes for parents in trouble, and healthy relationships classes. One of the biggest hurdles we face, with men and BOYS, is that if they stand up for a woman, or a girl or a weaker boy who is being abused or harassed, they get calledfags and homos by the abuser and their peers...So they don't speak up.

Until the stigma of homosexuality is gone, men and boys will continue to use that language to marginalize anyone who has compassion for, or tries to defend a girl. They will be considered 'less than manly' by the dominant peer culture, and ostracized. This is a problem only men can change...One need only to read the Freep thread to see how deeply ingrained this language and peer culture is.

//But we are ALL gay New Yorkers, today

Having watched a local doctor die, and his partner fight the family AND the laws of this state, I totally understand what you mean. It is the most anguishing aspect of this fight, to me.

tony41454: This needs to be said here:

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice, they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. (Romans 1:21-32)

When DOMA is ruled unconstitutional, "civil unions" will count for very little. IL is new, but there are several differences between NJ marriages and civil unions, legally. I can't remember all the facts now, but civil unions are decidedly second class, and not just in name.

@Tony

Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?Jesus replied, "'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:36-40)

I'd consider it in terms of politics. The republicans that voted for the bill know they might take it on the chin during the next election, cuz they a) voted for what is right; b) knew they were moving out of 'the job' after this election cycle; c) both. I choose c). These guys will find jobs, no doubt.

I'm happy to see this bill was elected democratically through the legislature. I worry about (here in NY) those republicans who voted against the bill - creating a war-chest for future elections. Interesting to see the run-up to the federal election. As always, 'moral issues' will be intimately connected to issues (economy; education; war, et.al) yet again.

That being said I'm very happy to see this bill passed into law!

Considering that Florida has a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, it'll happen when this current batch of old people die off and the younger generations are in the majority.

Though, I think that before the old people die off, we're probably going to get a Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage nationwide.
