Antimatter: Actually, marriage has a lot to do with state functions: power of attorney, spousal privilege, inheritance, taxation, child care, etc.

The question is more likely, why is religion involved?

That's what I was getting at in a way. Marriage is traditionally a religious concept, all "marriages" in terms of legality should be civil unions (legally binding). Other than legal reasons, there is no reason for the government to block consenting adult couples (hetero or homosexual) from marrying. Religion should not factor into the legality at all...at least in a free society.

I'm all for removing religion from the entire matter by doing away with the legality of marriage and calling them all civil unions. Either way, gays should have as much right to be legally joined as straight couples.

Somacandra: michaelnatter: apparently someone yelled about harassment and the cops started promising "more gay bar raids".

Raiding gay bars? It isn't illegal to be in a bar in NY, and isn't illegal to be gay in NY. Stonewall was years ago. What is there to raid about?

NYC bars/clubs will get raided by the City for basic things:
- over capacity of club's legal capacity (normal)
- drugs (wouldn't be surprised)
- health department violations (flies around the bottles; clean bathrooms, etc)

Seeing it's Pride Weekend in NYC the LAST thing the NYPD want to do is bust a gay bar. They must have had a pretty good reason (mentioned above) to shut it down. I would assume the bar in question had either a drug or capacity problem. Shutting down a gay bar at the beginning of their busiest weekend sends a strong message to other bars/clubs this weekend. Remember, a club/bar in NYC will gross between $100-$500K this weekend.

To get the bar reopened a judge needs to rule on it. Most judges will be out golfing in the Hamptons tomorrow.

Nah. If NY is going to be a place from a Fairy Tale or fictional book, I think Metropolis or Gotham is a closer match.

styckx: DaShredda: I'm reading Free Republic laughing my ass off.

These people think this is a sign of the end times. LAWL

Yep.. They are seriously losing their shiat.. It's embarrassing to normal religious folks who honestly don't give a shiat and don't sit and play wordsmith with bible verses to make them out to say something they actually don't.

Oh lawd, I just started reading the Freep thread and I may never get out the door tonight. Not only are they freaking out, they're getting trolled. And they're arguing about whether this means that 9/11 was all New Yorkers' fault or whether they deserve a second 9/11. (Yes, an argument means there are Freepers with a shred of decency arguing against terror attacks on New York.) That and the Revelation quotes and discussion of the end times makes this a Freep vintage worth savouring.

Samples:

Not to worry, Jesus is taking notes, so to speak.

This is the most important thing Jesus has to do. He's not going to get to work punishing mass rapists in Congo. He is going to make sure everyone who is nice to gays faces the consequences, because that's what being Jesus is all ABOUT.

Concrete, filth, crime and now this. More than enough reason to never again visit the Empire state.

Real Americans build with straw bricks like in the Bible. Concrete is a horrible and depraved building material.

Well, frankly, I hope every Senator who voted for this depravity goes home, eats a good meal, gets a good night's sleep, and then wakes up with a debilitating stroke that makes the rest of their lives a long, miserable, unending hell. That's exactly what these pieces of human garbage deserve.

Someone sat down at their computer and actually typed that out! All because some people they don't even know can get married.

Egads, even the Empire State Building is celebrating evil with rainbow lights tonight.

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Isaiah 5:20

Mmmm... bittersweet chocolate.

The redneck and Catholic counties farked us over in Cali. NY just opened the floodgates, though. When the world doesn't end, there'll be little argument left to make.

So did Utah. Were you aware that the Mormons poured millions into campaigning against equality?

Yep, and based on the way current legal decisions have been going it's going to be for naught.

They wasted their money working exhaustively for a temporary setback against gay peoples' legal rights.

There are more gays in the US than Mormons... in fact there are more Lady Gaga twitter followers than Mormons.

That may be so, but numbers don't count as much as dollars, and the Mormon church has plenty, and knows how to play politics.

Not to worry though, the Mormons god has a long history of subordinating His Will to suit the political changes in society. Expect a "revelation" from the prophet when the majority of states start accepting gay marriage.

Actually, marriage is a state concept, religion co-opted it. The state issues were always more important to the union. This is why you don't need a priest to be married.

Don't know about whoever runs the ESB though - but I'm pretty sure their only concern is that they get paid.

I just checked wikipedia. They have lit it up in lavender before for gay pride so their support is nothing new.

Um yeah we'd like a permit to light up the Empire State Building in rainbow colors for 2011 pride weekend (cough) "To commemerate Jerry Garcia" (cough). You know, Jerry Garcia. That tye-dye guy. We want to light up the Empire Friggin' State Building in rainbow colors, on just that weekend, for no other reason than because we know that NYC in 2011 has a huge hippie population.

styckx: Foxnews is hilarious

On the frontpage

In the actual article.

LOLWUT ???

No, Fox is correct. He said the same legal rights, he didn't say he favoured gay marriage. In theory (although rarely in practice) that could mean civil unions that conferred the same legal rights. In other words, separate but equal.

Obama is tiptoeing around being pro-gay marriage. He wants leftists to know that he's not horribly anti-gay (and it's true, he isn't at all), but he doesn't want to scare Middle America by suggesting gays get the M word. And Obama plays the long game. I wouldn't be surprised if he suddenly had some kind of moral revelation in December 2014 and decided to favour full gay marriage, particularly if the Democrats control the House and Senate.

Three Iowa Supreme Court justices lost their seats Tuesday in a historic upset fueled by their 2009 decision that allowed same-sex couples to marry.

Hmm, it would be interesting to see who has outspent whom here, but if I recall correctly the campaign donations for Prop 8 were almost even - although the Mormons spent far more on unreported "church related activities" like bussing their supporters into California.

/Gaga's been decent at playing politics too, although she doesn't organize her own doorknockers and signs, she just sends all her supporters to HRC. The Mormons are definitely losing the race with Gaga in terms of cultural production. I guarantee "Born Ex-Gay" is not going to take off.

Good to hear. I forgot to mention that the NYPD want to keep greedy bar/club owner$ and their promoter$ in-line (so not to over-fill the venue).

Pretty much a safety issue and generally little to do with the clientele (an 'urban crowd', if you understand, is a different ball-o-wax)

Hey, St. Louis can be quite progressive with all the universities there. But travel 10-20 miles out of the city and it's pretty much the same as being in the Ozarks. That and Columbia since it has Mizzou and all.

Yeah...try living in Springfield. I'm choked daily with their righteous religion thrown in my face, their ridiculous Fox-bred "thoughts," and their hatred of anything with more than 3 teeth and some education. And you can't even say the word "gay" without receiving hatred and spittle in return.

However, yay NY!!! Took ya long enough, but I'm so glad this passed. NY and CA are usually the frontrunners for the more progressive laws (e.g. smoking bans); they've dropped the ball till now.
