common sense surrenders

Finally! As someone who lives in San Francisco, I can't believe NY beat us to it. Well, we did it first, but then we got farked by the Mormons. But you know what I mean.

Uncle Pim: Finally, after 13 years, I can marry my partner.

Congratulations! Love is love is love, and I'm so happy for everyone whose lives will be impacted positively through this! :)

I have a question, though, and mean this very much out of curiosity: Why do people in homosexual relationships call each other partners instead of boyfriend or girlfriend? Is it a privacy thing or fear of being stereotyped/ridiculed, or is it just a term that is used within the population? I'm just wondering, and am too afraid of offending anyone IRL by asking.

Best of luck to you and your future spouse! And many more congratulations!!!

You realize this is about idolatry and not sex right? It means ritualistic sex as certain adherents to the Roman religion practiced it, but that's a symptom of their idolatry, not the actual condition Paul was addressing.

Oh come on, it isn't any worse than Mardi Gras or Gasparila.

2011-06-25 12:48:38 AM

tony41454: This needs to be said here:

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice, they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. (Romans 1:21-32)

WTF does that even mean? I mean seriously - is this even relevant?

YEAH! Can't these so-called book-learned "city folk" people see that using basic common sense is just as bad as senselessly believing in supernatural bullshiat and using that belief system to repress human beings? Gosh, when will these damn intellectuals stop raining on the religious fundamentalist hate parade? It's getting to be so there's no fun in being a gay-hating, bible-thumping zealot anymore. Why can't it be 1950 again? Used to be, you could throw a gay man in jail for looking at you funny and then go home and read your rambo-Jesus version of the bible in peace. Now we have to "be sensitive to others" and "love thy neighbor" - it's enough to make a fundamentalist mouthbreather wanna beat-off in his dark attic to the male underwear section of the Sears catalog in self-hating denial of who he really is. Why, I might just have to hit up RentBoy.com and leave the country for a while to get my head straight, with all this "freedom" and "tolerance" bullshiat. Why, it's flat-out un-American the way everybody's getting treated equally now and pursuing life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Personally, I'm straight and I call my boyfriend my partner. I like the term- it's a really good word to denote an equal, permanent relationship.

And I mean... if you're gay and you use the word boyfriend or girlfriend- you're basically coming out over and over again to whoever you're talking to, no matter how casual the conversation. I imagine a neutral term is sometimes just the most positive, easy way to go.

I imagine it's one of those very personal things. After you spend 20+ years with someone, you develop your own name for them, and it becomes second nature.

Best of luck to you and your future spouse! And many more congratulations!!!

Heck, I'm a little jealous of NY. Us Texans are going to be taxed for millions and millions of bucks to keep the local McChurches from getting their panties in too big a wad over who gets to spend $15k buying flowers for someone else.

It's one of the passages brought up whenever anyone wants to try to show the New Testament condemns homosexuality. Thing is, the passage does nothing of the sort.

Well if it's in bigotry then I hope they're aware of how the gay rights movement started in America in the first place. And also that they get firebombs and beer bottles thrown at them.

If it's for a legitimate reason, let's hope it goes smoothly.

Yeah, that's what it was for.

Looks more like advance planning and a plausible cover story that fooled city hall.

/my faith in the youth of America just went up a notch. What a great prank. Well done!

Doubt they had to fool City Hall - Bloomberg is strongly pro-gay rights, and the Speaker of the City Council is an out lesbian.

Don't know about whoever runs the ESB though - but I'm pretty sure their only concern is that they get paid.

log_level_utility: are you familiar with the psychological concept of "projection"?

are you familiar with the psychological concept of "deflection"?

Since I obviously don't hold any Ill will towards gays, why would I be guilt-ridden or, for that matter, closeted?
Why would anyone but a self-hating homosexual care so much about what 2 (or 10) consenting adults do with their time? I care about personal freedom, that is things that don't personally involve me or anyone who can't, or doesn't, consent.
Since the latter two don't apply, this is obviously a personal issue in your case.

CurlyGirly: Why do people in homosexual relationships call each other partners instead of boyfriend or girlfriend?

It started off as a subtle way to work around the standard reaction from others. Also, for those who felt that boyfriend/girlfriend was not a significant enough terms for their commitment, but couldn't get married.

/you shouldn't be afraid of asking polite and honest questions
//still happy to help

Right on! I remember how much euphoria there was when Canada legalized gay marriage. It's a good feeling.

Someone upthread questioned why Lady Gaga is getting attention. She added a big celebrity spotlight to the National Equality March on Washington in 2009, was among those who helped embarrass HRC into being more relevant, has a song about gay (and other!) self-acceptance that most kids in America can sing along to, and has had her 11 million Twitter followers calling NY State Senators for weeks. This b*tch has uncompromisingly used her celebrity to push gay activism and she's probably the most famous LGBTQ person in New York, and quite possibly in America. (Sorry, NPH, Ellen and Takei.)

Don't worry - the next bad thing that happens for the country, the fundies will be bleating about how it's because their god hates us gays and he hates all the people who don't hate us, too.

But he loves everybody.

This will end in .... *drum roll please* .... gays being married. That's it. Future generations of gays will be able to marry as well. Sorry that you are such a bigoted asshole. Thankfully your generation will die off soon.
