Good luck on that one. Too many people like my grandmother still live there. Outside KC, the bigotry is choking.

Hey, St. Louis can be quite progressive with all the universities there. But travel 10-20 miles out of the city and it's pretty much the same as being in the Ozarks. That and Columbia since it has Mizzou and all.

/lives in the suburbs of St. Louis

Yeah...try living in Springfield. I'm choked daily with their righteous religion thrown in my face, their ridiculous Fox-bred "thoughts," and their hatred of anything with more than 3 teeth and some education. And you can't even say the word "gay" without receiving hatred and spittle in return.

However, yay NY!!! Took ya long enough, but I'm so glad this passed. NY and CA are usually the frontrunners for the more progressive laws (e.g. smoking bans); they've dropped the ball till now.

This. I'm always a little careful just how much liberal I let show in Missouri. F*cking Red Staters take the whole Bible thing very serious around here....

YAY!! 2 Springfield farkers that are not bigots...that makes my fave tally of SGF farkers (drumroll please) 2! With the darling husband and I that makes 4, which is enough for a fun bbq :)

On topic, RIGHT ON NYS!!!

/There. I said it.

501(c)3 is a voluntary tax status. Churches choose it in exchange for their direct voice in politics.

I think it's a reasonable trade.

Imagine if churches didn't and directed their full influence and money from their sheeple into politics. That's a much worse scenario than what we have now.

I do think we need to tighen up the workind of 501(c)3 so that the shinnanigans the Mormon's pulled with Prop 8 in CA would have been an obvious violation, currently it's too ambiguous when it says "a significant amount of resources and money" must not be used for political action.

First the Mormons said it was less than 20K when it ended up greater than 200K.

They lied. But because 200K (and the phone banks calling voters from out of state) was still "insignificant" in comparison to what the "church" takes in, they didn't have their tax-exempt status revoked.

I say make it ZERO effort can be expended and let them keep their money -- and their hands off politics.

tony41454: This needs to be said here:

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice, they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. (Romans 1:21-32)

You're a larper, and you don't even know that you're a larper. Somewhere along the way you started taking yourself and your excursions into fantasy way too seriously, possibly with a larger group doing the same, and you got lost there and now you think your fantasies are reality and in this "reality," even the perfectly equitable parts are by your narratives bare assertion a forsaken humanity filled with a magical property called 'sin.' Please go throw your spell packets elsewhere, everyone but you realizes they aren't really lighting bolts, and no matter how loud you shout "lighting bolt" it will never be real.

If the only reason you don't want gays to get married is because of a book of fiction, you are a coont.

Stop imposing your beliefs on other people you self-righteous bags of shiat.

The bible is fiction, god isn't real, so your argument that god doesn't like homosexuality is about as valid as saying that Sauron was a dick for using the ring of power for evil.

It is embarrassing to think that there are human beings that still believe in the bible.

THIS.

Two of the largest land owners in NYC are the Catholic and Episcopal churches. Some revenue from that land in taxes could go a long way for the city and state.

His statement isn't expending money or influence.

See for yourself why it needs to be clarified as it is mostly directed towards support of candidates. I didn't write it but the law is broken and thus the courts have too much leeway in deciding if a violation occurred.

http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/article/0,,id=163395,00.html (new window)

Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity. Violating this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes.

Certain activities or expenditures may not be prohibited depending on the facts and circumstances. For example, certain voter education activities (including presenting public forums and publishing voter education guides) conducted in a non-partisan manner do not constitute prohibited political campaign activity. In addition, other activities intended to encourage people to participate in the electoral process, such as voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives, would not be prohibited political campaign activity if conducted in a non-partisan manner.

On the other hand, voter education or registration activities with evidence of bias that (a) would favor one candidate over another; (b) oppose a candidate in some manner; or (c) have the effect of favoring a candidate or group of candidates, will constitute prohibited participation or intervention.

The Internal Revenue Service provides resources to exempt organizations and the public to help them understand the prohibition. As part of its examination program, the IRS also monitors whether organizations are complying
