Uncle Pim: Finally, after 13 years, I can marry my partner.

Congrats!!! Just past 5 for my partner and I. Gonna stop by a city hall next time in NY! Thank god for no residency laws and a job as truck drivers!

tenpoundsofcheese: Awesome that the GOP controlled Senate passed this.

They were pressured by the Democrat governor to bring it to a vote, and only four of them voted yes. Let's wait a few years before we try to rewrite history, shall we?

Anyone who think this is a slippery slope to lead to legalization of incest and pedophile marriages need to look at marriage law. It follows the same guidelines, the only thing different is that both parties are of the same-sex (oh, and there's the whole can't bring lawsuits against churches deal).

Saw this on Real Time and just wanted to say that God is not gonna be happy with any of us. It's not like he sees the invisible borders delineating states.

/In all seriousness way to go New York, congrats to all the gays on their new found right to be as miserable as straight people.

Alright! Now, I can finally marry my turtle!

Which was unnecessary and redundant language to appease the four Republicans who voted aye. Already churches have freedom of assembly and can reject any couple they want, gay or straight.

Gay marriage passes in NY. Finally New York is just as cool as Iowa

Er, subby, you do realize what happened in response to gay marriage passing in Iowa, right? Iowa isn't as progressive as it seems.

It's a step forward for sure, but it's pathetic it's even a battle or an argument that we should treat any group of Americans as second class citizens today. All this separate but equal civil union shiat is obvious. So instead of celebrations, I'll simply say...

Next.

2011-06-24 10:57:48 PM

ipeeintheshower: FerneJohn: I remember reading an article when it passed in Iowa.

It never "passed" in Iowa. It was a court decision. If put to a vote of any kind it would fail overwhelmingly there.

1. You're right that it was a court decision. Poor wording on my part.
2. I don't know that it would fail "overwhelmingly." Poll after poll there has indicated that most Iowans don't care about it. They're probably not excited enough to pass it, but they certainly don't loathe it either.

2011-06-24 10:57:56 PM
If our President was Michele Bachmann, she would be giving the order to wipe out all of the major population centers in New York right about now. She'd probably watch the destruction from behind a bush too.

I wonder if all those fine folks who work for GLBT rights are worried about their job security after this? I mean, what else is there to go after?

styckx: And the worst headline gets lit..

Not just the worst, but the trolliest. It takes a genuinely awesome event and adds a layer of detached "Meh, no biggie" to it.

And it invites stupid bickering into it. Don't you just want to take the bait and point out the obvious differences between the Iowa and NY situations? I do, but I have a weakness for trolls.

I saw you in another thread earlier today...

a gay truck driving tandem. You should have country music songs written about you. Good country, not that pop country crap on FM Radio.

And that reminds me... why no "gay country" subgenre yet?

Will you, at least, tie some cans to the back of the rig?

Unless there's overwhelming support for it, most people tend to vote to maintain the status quo whether they agree with it or not. Kinda silly, but it's just how people work.

To: fwdude

"Is the Assembly all on board with the exemptions added?"

Doesn't matter. At a later date a liberal judge will throw the exemptions out after a lawsuit by the gay mafia.

I lol'd pretty farking hard at that one.

/Congrats to New York though
//Still holding his breath for MO to do the same before he dies

Good luck on that one. Too many people like my grandmother still live there. Outside KC, the bigotry is choking.

Hey, St. Louis can be quite progressive with all the universities there. But travel 10-20 miles out of the city and it's pretty much the same as being in the Ozarks. That and Columbia since it has Mizzou and all.

/lives in the suburbs of St. Louis

Yeah...try living in Springfield. I'm choked daily with their righteous religion thrown in my face, their ridiculous Fox-bred "thoughts," and their hatred of anything with more than 3 teeth and some education. And you can't even say the word "gay" without receiving hatred and spittle in return.

However, yay NY!!! Took ya long enough, but I'm so glad this passed. NY and CA are usually the frontrunners for the more progressive laws (e.g. smoking bans); they've dropped the ball till now.

For perspective -

Three Iowa Supreme Court justices lost their seats Tuesday in a historic upset fueled by their 2009 decision that allowed same-sex couples to marry.

Again I say, Iowa... not so progressive.

Anyone know what the exemption language means re: religious recognition of same-sex marriage? That is, if the church is involved in the foster/adoption process (receiving state funding) can they refuse a gay couple?

It was passed by a GOP Senate. When a similar bill was put forward in 2009, it was stopped by a Democrat controlled Senate. Where was the Gov in 2009 to pressure the Dems?

Hopefully, one day Obama will see the GOP was right on this and support same-sex marriage.

The 44 other states, to start. Plus ENDA and ending DOMA. State marriages are fine, but until the federal government recognizes them, they're not worth much.
