All marriages in the U.S. are civil marriages. The government contracts out the right to perform them to clergy. When you get married by a priest, he has to sign a government-issued form. You get a government-issued license. The priest has to say that the power to perform the marriage was vested in him by the state.

Seriously though, I'm not cheering until cannabis has been made legal for all. I don't just mean medicinal, but recreational purposes as well. Once I, and indeed all of us can light up whenever we choose (if we choose), then I will cheer for everybody. Go ahead, marry whatever you want, I'll be too high to care!

This has fark-all to do with him. This is a state's issue. Remember, government redefined marriage (from a sacrament to a contract), not the gays. That put it in the purview of the state. The feds ain't got shiat to say about anything. Which makes all this defense of marriage talk utterly moot.

Since only the states may sanction such a contract, they must show cause for removing the right to enter into such a contract. Yes? Being same-gendered does not give cause to the state to reduce that right.

Do this - find your state's statutory scheme online and look up (under civil rights or probate chapters) how and when your state can reduce or remove your rights or privileges. It's typically after showing cause that you are no longer capable of making your own decisions. Has utterly nothing to do with sexual orientation.

Thumbnail: the government never had - nor should have - the authority to tell you who you may call family.


You're right, but I meant that on a personal level he can't say that he's for gay marriage or it'd be damaging to his 2012 campaign. Although we don't know his real opinion any way, like pretty much any politician.

As much as I dislike an overabundance of legislation coming down from the federal to the state government level, I would fully support a federal law or executive order that establishes a definition of marriage as a civil contract between two agreeing parties of the age of majority, executed in the presence of an official designated to preside over such agreements. In short, if two adults wish to enter into an agreement, they can - no matter what their race, creed, color or gender may be.

1) I wish they'd stop saying I can now marry whoever you want in NY. WRONG. I highly doubt I can marry Katy Perry or Zooey Deschanel just by cossing the state line.

2) my sister got married friday and we're staying in my time share and they grabbed a room in the same time share for the weekend. (they werent able to go away and have a big deal honeymoon) they checked into their room and then we headed to our room to have a few drinks and chill and I got a text that it had passed. so my wife says "I think gays should have the right to just as miserable as us married folks!" I look at my sister and say "what are your thoughts on that mrs Bishop?"

Hopefully, one day Obama will see the GOP was right on this and support same-sex marriage.

Yeah, a blind person can see that the Dem Gov in 2009 was not willing to pressure the Dem Senate in 2009 to pass this.
Yet, a GOP controlled Senate passed this in 2011.

The only thing embarrassing is how pathetic the Dems were in 2009. It took a GOP led Senate to pass this.


I noticed at the Gay Pride parade that it wasn't those Republican senators being praised but rather that Democratic Governor who had to twist their arms.

It's the symbol of Wall street and a tourist attraction. Often you'll see groups of tourists taking pictures in front of it, and more recently they sometimes take pictures from the back, with some tourist cupping its "balls" aka "grabbing the bull by the balls".

The GOP did everything they could to stop this. The Dems were the ones who pushed the issue, and won.

You appear to be suggesting that the credit for legalizing gay marriage in NY is due to the GOP. Is this, in fact, your position?

The Dem controlled Senate stopped it in 2009.
The GOP controlled Senate passed it in 2011.

I don't remember that back in 2009 the headlines were "Dems reject same-sex marriage"

Credit doesn't go to the GOP or the Dems but to the activists who have tireless campaigned for this to happen.

I give Lady Gaga more credit than I do to any Dem or Republican.

I wouldn't say the Democrats "controlled" the State Senate. Google "Pedro Espada" and "Hiram Monserrate" if you don't know what I mean.

I will concede point that now that the Republicans no longer feel politically threatened, they no longer feel the pressure to vote in lockstep with the party. They should be proud; their strategy of holding the social policy preferences of most of the residents of this state ransom worked out well for them.


And "Rev." Ruben Diaz, who was also a member of that crew and who among the Democrats had fought the hardest against this bill being passed.

Yeah, but it's his constituents who keep re-electing the turd, which suggests that they agree with him. Barring a scandal, it's up to them to vote him out.
