Well, they need help. These people were essentially in a cult.

2011-05-23 06:04:40 PM
Not stupid, just dumb as a box of rocks

2011-05-23 06:07:44 PM
Trolltastic headline, subby. All the article said was "this is a learning opportunity." It didn't even knock religion.

2011-05-23 06:07:49 PM
Now they can join the cult of the banana

"Other religions"? Subby, did you RTFA?

2011-05-23 06:08:16 PM
No, I'm pretty sure his followers were stupid.

2011-05-23 06:08:51 PM
Yes, you are.

Unfortunately, your shame will pass. That's too bad. If you felt this humiliation for a few years, it might occur to you not to repeat your gullibility. But this particular prophecy was so mind-bogglingly obvious that I've got no doubt that your gullibility is permanent. You won't learn from this mistake because if you had the capacity to learn from this mistake, you wouldn't have made this one.

I'd be really gratified if some of you proved me wrong, but I'm almost certain that nearly all of you will move on to the next charismatic preacher who will try to fill the emptiness in your life with empty promises about how an invisible deity loves you. They will tell you that thinking is counterproductive, only belief is important, and it's crucial that you not try to learn from experience or reconsider that maybe there's a genuinely different way to look at the world.

After all, they can't ALL be wrong, can they?

2011-05-23 06:09:25 PM
It's as if a strong desire of hope and a want for meaningful change led them to do something rash they regretted. It takes years for something like that to pass.

2011-05-23 06:10:49 PM
Where's the followup on the story about the nutjob parents who thought they were going to get raptured but told their teenage kids that they didn't think the kids were coming too?

2011-05-23 06:11:28 PM
So have there been any good interviews with these people since the world failed to end?

2011-05-23 06:11:40 PM
Awesome headline

2011-05-23 06:12:36 PM

Ben Enya: It's as if a strong desire of hope and a want for meaningful change led them to do something rash they regretted. It takes years for something like that to pass.

Oh, shut up.

2011-05-23 06:14:26 PM
For all you guys know, the world did end and your personal hell is to be stuck with these idiots forever.

2011-05-23 06:14:27 PM
Let's see... you got a sizable population of people with a solid track record of hemorrhaging cash and a surprising lack of critical thinking skills.

2011-05-23 06:15:30 PM
I'm going to start a cult. It shall be called, "The Cult of Nothingness". Send me your wealth and in return I will give you nothing and I will have something.

/got nothing.

Step one: Prophet
Step two: Prophecy
Step three: Profit

Maybe a bit strong to include in the comfort message that God is fiction. Perhaps it would be more psychologically comfortable to join one of the churches that were trying to help Camping's followers, like the Methodist group that was outside their headquarters offering support when the Rapture didn't come.

I think that's what the headline is referring to, and I'm sympathetic to the sentiment expressed. People who are confused and angry don't want God taken away from them, too.

2011-05-23 06:17:02 PM
Now about this *tithing* thing...

2011-05-23 06:17:27 PM
They're just mentally challenged (when tying their shoes).

2011-05-23 06:18:03 PM
Yes. You are stupid. Even George Bush stupid if you ask me.

You should all shoot yourselves.

That is what god wants you to do anyway.

Do it.

Quickly.

"You are not stupid, your shame will pass"

Doubt it, for those who had shameful passings*.

tennyson: But this particular prophecy was so mind-bogglingly obvious that I've got no doubt that your gullibility is permanent.

To be fair, most prophecies are usually deliberately uttered so as to remove them from rational discourse. I.e., "after the third wave, in the Prince's millenium, there shall be wars, rumors of wars, and several other bad things. this, then, shall mark the time of trials."

I.e., cannot be subjected to rational scrutiny. No dates are given, and everything is so vague it's subject to just about any subjective interpretation.

This guy at least had the cajones to utter a prophecy that we could test for its truth. Not that that would have made me believe him. But I can see how someone might say, "this has marginally more merit than other prophecies I've heard or read."

And, btw, I'm in the camp that says they're stupid. Some of them gave away all their damn money.

So, what sin did I commit to have to put up with you?

2011-05-23 06:19:30 PM
I figure if there was a God, and He was going to end the world in a great destructive act, then He would at least give a heads up to his assumed beloved.

God: Hey, Bob.
Bob: Yeah?
God: I'm going to blow up Earth tomorrow. Wear something festive. Ok?
Bob: Ok. I'll be in my Sunday best, Lord.
God: Ok. Later... erm, I mean well... you know what I mean.

as a geologist I demand that you not insult our rocks like that

Yeah, you are kind of stupid if you fell for that.

Your credulousness will not. Which is why we're here for you.

meat0918: fritton: So have there been any good interviews with these people since the world failed to end?

Yeah, "I'm wrong," Fitzpatrick admitted about his May 21 prediction, and he seemed genuinely baffled and confused by the non-event.

"I just don't understand," he said repeatedly. "Everything indicted this was the day and that was the time."

Give that guy some credit. At least he had the guts to go stand in the middle of Times Square and take his medicine like a man instead of slinking off or telling people, "I never really believed it anyway" like some have done.

Still a fool though.

No as a matter of farking fact YOU WERE FARKING STUPID!

You preen and grovel to some imaginary bullshiat to save you from the difficulties of living when what you should be doing is facing farking reality and WORKING to make life better for you and yours!

Just farking THINK of what the money and time you waste praying and giving to churches could do if you redirected it into working, saving, and investing smartly to build a better future for your own. Just farking think what the time wasted in church could accomplish if you and yours spent that time getting a real education and then working towards scientific discovery or labor that made a DIFFERENCE in people's lives!

But no, you are content to waste you farking money in the collection plate, and bowing and supplicating to a non-entity to do everything for you because you are too damn lazy and irresponsible to get up and do those things for yourself!

GROW THE FARK UP! Start dealing with reality on its terms and make a real difference no matter how large or small before the only goddamn thing you end up leaving behind are pathetic platitudes to a farking fairy tale!

Let's just get this out of the way before LeTrole shows up:

Atheism is a religion like bald is a hair color and not collecting stamps is a hobby.

2011-05-23 06:25:11 PM
You're stupid if you fell for bullshiat that was propagated over the internet and radio in 2011, but you're not stupid if you fell for the same bullshiat if it was propagated via stone tablets and papyrus 2000 years ago, so ahead and make fun of those people that fell for the modern day propagation of the same bullshiat because they are FARKING STUPID!!

"He's the true Messiah, and I should know, I've followed a few in my lifetime!" - Life of Brian.

why do you call yourself a monotheist when you have 3 gods?

why do you say you do not kill, but gladly pray for your rapture/end of the world where BILLIONS of people will suffer a horrible death?

Why when your scripture advises against false prophets and says the time of the end of the world cannot be known to men, do you keep following false prophets who claim to know the exact time of the end of the world?

Why do you follow a man who predicted the end of the world before, and was wrong? Three strikes rule?

Why do you claim to follow the Prince of Peace, a man who advocated love and tollerance, but then hate everyone who dissagrees with you, looks diffrent, believes diffrent, and such, so much you want them to suffer for eternity?

How about going one better and helping them realize they never needed the god fiction in the first place.

People need support when they break free of cults. David Silverman isn't religious, in fact he's the president of American Atheists. Remember the Bill O'Reilly interview? He's this guy.

Even though his calculations were off, he was still right. Only 2 people were raptured, not 200 million. Sorry for the rest of you as I type this from Heaven. Let me know if you want to Sky-pe.

There's no reason to be ashamed. It wasn't the end of the world.

2011-05-23 06:33:40 PM
These people look down their noses at most of us and hope that we'll die a painful and horrifying death if we refuse to join their religion. I have no sympathy for them.

Lets see, they failed to check the source documentation for their belief system, and didn't catch the major bug in the plans

are ya so sure about the not stupid part folks?

I actually was Raptured but I had tickets to see Iron Maiden so I came back.

True story.
