Wait, so you're saying that by mocking everything wrong at the time in British society- the clueless lower and upper classes, the racism, the homophobia, and the general surrealism of modern life- they succeeded but only to have it replaced with a more stupid, racist, and surreal society?

Wouldn't a simpler explanation be that Cleese is old and crotchety and no longer has a tolerance for the ever-changing but always similar plights of humanity?

Maybe for the public acknowledgement of the Silly and Very Silly parties, but I see nothing detrimental in that.

"That's what being a Protestant's all about. That's why it's the church for me. That's why it's the church for anyone who respects the individual and the individual's right to decide for him or herself. When Martin Luther nailed his protest up to the church door in fifteen-seventeen, he may not have realised the full significance of what he was doing, but four hundred years later, thanks to him, my dear, I can wear whatever I want on my John Thomas... From the article quoted (new window)by the article that was articlulated in the article of this articulate thread:
He [Cleese] said: "There were disadvantages to the old culture, it was a bit stuffy and it was more sexist and more racist. But it was an educated and middle-class culture. Now it's a yob culture. The values are so strange."

He could be talking about any state south of Maryland, you know.

It is certainly true that London explicitly sold the Olympics on the fact that the city, while less pleasant than Paris in every conceivable way, was multicultural.

If only someone could conceive of a way in which London was nicer:

And while there are many positive things about cosmopolitan London - a dark-skinned Frenchman once told me that London was paradise because nowhere in France could he go about his business without fearing his skin colour might cause some problem - it is certainly not English in the way that Bath still is.

Yeah, but that only applies to brown people, and thus doesn't count. Anyway, someone who says Paris trumps London in "every conceivable way" can EABOD when it comes to talking about what's properly English.

Monty Python's Flying Circus were not the first humans to discover that knocking the powerful and stuffy down a few pegs is hilarious. It's an art that's been practiced for centuries.

Authoritarians can't laugh unless someone's kicking someone who's already down, can they?? God, what a sad, pitiful personality tfa's author must have...

I remember a time in the 80's when even Howdy Doody (yes, THE Howdy Doody) was accused of being a liberal communist. The guy who played Buffalo Bob got wind of this and toally went mushroom cloud all over the detractors.

Hell, the goons even hated Mister Rogers simply because the very idea of liking yourself just the way you are totally flies in the face of the GOP way of life, where you are measured only by how much money you have or how brutal you are to other people, animals, and things.

2011-04-21 12:52:46 PM
Some of those skits involved men wearing dresses! Dresses people! If this doesn't undermine traditional values, I don't what does. Plus there's the blatant historical revisionism, look at how they depict the Bombing of Pearl Harbor, it was Japanese men hitting each other with handbags, not women. Sheesh, just makes me sick.
