Ok, I get it Canadian money=Monopoloy money. I'm an idiot. I will shut up now.

Actually, Canadian money doesn't quite = monopoly money. I think we only get about 90 monopoly cents to the dollar.

2003-08-08 04:56:47 PM
Thankyou Weaps! I really didn't understand why the heck I was supposed to dislike SCO. When I asked I was usually given "SCO is evil. You're supposed to hate them".

It's always nice when somebody takes the time out to explain why I'm supposed to hate something. Now that I understand that, I can understand the page.

In the future, it's all about knowing what you'rr talking about.

Now c'mon.. be fair.. a Critical 20 can kill.. even from an elf.

SomeBigFarkingMan - you may be more right than you know. Most Linux users that I know (myself included) use Linux because it's free as in Freedom. I personally have no problem supporting companies who distribute Linux financially. I have plunked down my dollars for several different distros. And it's really not that bad of an OS.

This poor dumb SOB who made this website got nailed by Fark AND Slashdot on the same day. Next time he won't try to be such a smartarse.
2003-08-08 04:59:19 PM
When Caldera was sueing MSFT for DR DOS all the Linux Loonies where jumping up and down for joy.

Why are all the Linuts so angry now?
2003-08-08 05:00:20 PM
Gwinny? Dare you besmunge this thread with your appearance?
You show your face around here and I'll smunge you right, I will!

Got a little gropwattled there.
2003-08-08 05:03:07 PM
I am a linux geek and I'm tired of the SCO garbage. I almost cringe when I go to slashdot now in case there's another SCO tag waiting for me. The bottom line is that SCO is full of balogna sausage and they're a bunch of ho-mas. That defense should stand up in court.

About the linked "atricle" => Not That Funny!!!

Awldun: I think the funny thing is that the license cost is US$199 and it looks like he's sending them Canadian money.

farking Funny!!!

ParanoidRain: Awldun, your like joking right? Canadian money? Have you never played Monopoly??

farking Dumbass!!! :-)

This wasn't funny when I first saw it hours ago on Slashdot.

pkjun: that sounded really...dirty.
2003-08-08 05:08:36 PM
I still think that I've made the best possible offer by offering them "the finger", with an additional "the finger" (since I have two hands) should they show that the SMP code in the kernel was stolen from them (I don't use SMP, so it's not compiled into my kernel).
2003-08-08 05:09:42 PM
My favorite part is him quoting the bible at the end.
I'm pretty sure Jesus wouldn't send fake money to a company to be a smartass and then post his smart-assedness on the internet.

Or maybe Jesus would.
I don't recall reading anything about him NOT being a smartass!

That's it! From now on, in my mind, Jesus was a smartass!

"Hey! Thanks A LOT God! Good job forsaking me and all!"
2003-08-08 05:09:42 PM
what a waste of monopoly money
2003-08-08 05:13:16 PM
buntz: yeah, that was my favorite part too.

I believe that not only was Jesus a smartass, but also that he could turn Monopoly money into real live Canadian money.
2003-08-08 05:18:22 PM

Actually he kind of was ... the whole "let he who has no sin cast the first stone" was a pretty pithy thing to say. There are quite a few other examples of his sarcasm if you understand the culture of the time.

2003-08-08 05:33:08 PM
this is serious shiatt,

really guys. Microsoft paid SCO so SCO would have a war chest with which to go forth and destabilize linux's market base. It's a proxy war being waged against the GPL. Now, the serious part is that the GPL probably will NOT hold up in court. Thereby throwing the open source community into tizzies. Or os Microsoft hopes. The extent of these guys evilness prompts even heathens to quote scripture.

Let us all pray that Darl McBride falls into a vat of acid *or something*
2003-08-08 05:35:05 PM
Fnord, Oh that would be perfect.

But it would require someone at SCO to have a sense of humor and They are obviously souless clumps of fecal matter recalling their glory days and wishing all the Point Of Sales clients hadn't ditched them and their ten year old OS.
2003-08-08 05:35:11 PM
Isn't that a software company which used to have some significance but whose stock options are now worth about as much as steaming cow pies?
2003-08-08 05:40:37 PM
Actually I don't use linux so much because it is free. I use it because it works just like the UNIX I've grown to know over the past 17 years, and I work better with it. I've paid for my RedHat many times, with the knowledge that that money goes to RedHat. Not some scheming businessman who doesn't care what product he sells. I don't say that as a political issue, since the very software company I work for has executives and a CEO who wouldn't care if we sell software or used cars. At least our executives are a little more honest.

I sure as hell ain't gonna give any money to the likes of SCO. I'd sooner buy something from Microsoft. Which I have.

Also Linux zealots don't care much for Adobe because of their policies and anti-open source in general. I say screw that; Adobe has good products, we're all in this to make a living, and since I now run Adobe products on Linux the zealots can kiss my ass.
2003-08-08 05:42:39 PM
so how many of you guys were at DEFCON this past weekend? I WAS!!!!
2003-08-08 05:44:17 PM
yuks: Interesting. Why would the GPL have trouble holding up in court? I'm kind of interested in case precedence, if there is any. For example, has anyone ever sued over a breach of GPL?
2003-08-08 05:44:35 PM
I thought it was funny, but then I should be working.
2003-08-08 05:44:52 PM
Ain't America wonderful... company with a $5 stock loosing $9 per share and paying a dividend to yield 5% Jim Crammer, where else could you get %5% on your money...bwahahhahahaha

If my tags don't work here it is to save me a repost

Y'all can email the new director of investor relations at SCO. Address on the above link.
2003-08-08 05:45:14 PM
KimVette: You can flatten and dry steaming cow pies into rather efficient fuel. Try that with 20 lines from a Linux kernel. ;)

Ignore previous post of mine... I'm an A1 asshat for posting the wrong stock symbol and commenting on information not releated to SCO...

besmuggingly I crawl back under my rock.

Why on earth has no one photoshopped this guy yet?!
2003-08-08 05:57:00 PM
I hate to be a compulsive asshat but didn't the page say the liscence would cost $199...if so then why is there only $104 on the table...If you are going to spend that much time preparing the joke - at least get it right - otherwise you will look like an asshat...

(I'll try and save you the effort)

There's been some misinformation in this thread regarding the SCO vs. IBM stuff, and I'll try to clarify the situation for those not following it.

The main part of SCO's claim against IBM is that code that SCO claims they have the rights to was put into Linux, and that IBM must have done that. This would be a violation of IBM's contract with them. SCO is the owner to the rights of the original UNIX code that most other vendors derive their UNIX from, but this does not apply to the independent and freely developed OSes like Linux and BSD. In this case IBM has a license to distribute their version of UNIX called AIX. SCO's claim is that any code IBM modifies in UNIX for AIX, SCO retains copyright of. Essentially if IBM develops an improvement of UNIX to make AIX work better, they have to give that code over to SCO.

SCO says that some of the code in UNIX, which would have originated at IBM while being developed for AIX, has also been found in Linux. Therefore SCO claims IBM violated their license and owes them a ton of money and that because this code "rightfully" belongs to them anyone using kernel 2.4 and above owes them money.

Now as I understand it, at least with regards to some of the functionality SCO has mentioned as being copied, IBM says they developed the technology, then implemented it in AIX as well as Linux. IBM is saying they developed this technology independent of the OS, and while the implementation in AIX may be governed by the contract with SCO, the rights to the technology still belong with IBM and they can do what they want with it.

SCO has not offered a lot of proof of what has been copied. Instead they are just trying to scare a lot of people into paying license fees they don't need to pay. There's a lot of people that believe SCO is doing this to hike up their stock price because they don't have a viable business model. When the stock gets high the execs will sell, then let the company go down the drain. Taking on IBM in an intellectual property claim of any kind is stupid. They get more patents every year than just about anybody else. They know what they're doing in this business and they wouldn't have implemented anything under the GPL without their legal department's approval.

As for why people used to cheer Caldera (SCO's former name or one of the companies that they bought) and are now supporting IBM, it's quite simple. IBM has been a big supporter of the open-source movement for the past several years. They are not the same over-powering, close-minded company they were in the 80's. Caldera/SCO used to support open/free software, and is now trying to destroy the market because they can no longer compete.

2003-08-08 06:05:16 PM
Usually I don't bother saying something negative about articles I didn't like or thought were stupid. Usually I just hit alt+F4 and forget about it. This time is different. This post was so unbelievably unfunny that I simply must register my disgust formally and publicly. This post, in fact, was so unamusing that I was actually offended. Honestly, I'm not kidding.

Yes, I have been following this story. Yes, SCO's actions are pathetic and contemptible and no-one seems to think they have a case. Yes, I am a Linux user and have a personal (albeit a very minor) stake in the outcome of this. None of that makes any difference. This article has no redeeming qualities -- it is simply jackassery.

Remember, watching unfunny people trying to be funny is like watching someone sculpting with turds. It's impossible to even appreciate the effort when your material is shiat.

Whew, I feel better now.
2003-08-08 06:08:10 PM

2003-08-08 06:18:47 PM
Tsunami you're linking to the wrong stock. The major SCO stock symbol is SCOX (I'm not kidding) and not SCOR. You can view it here.
2003-08-08 06:24:24 PM
KeithLM there's even more.

The code SCO claims is in violation of their IP was released by SCO themselves under the GPL, meaning anyone was free to take that code, modify it as they saw fit (if at all) and re-distribute it. SCO is now saying they weren't aware that they released their own code under the GPL. AFAIK, ignorance is not a defence. On top of it, that code is still available in their linux distribution that you can download for free on the SCO website! (And still under the GPL!). Go figure.

SCO was basically trying to get bought out by IBM so the management could reap major moola. IBM saw thru the ruse, are now counter-suing, and will end up getting the company for nothing. Serves SCO right.
