"It's sort of an educational exhibit, but we don't
advertise it that way because we want people to come
and see us," said Tom Weidner, a Des Moines herpetologist.

That makes me sad. It's like Honey-Nut Cheerio's or Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Wasn't this a Satuday Night Live skit?

"Attention, this is your pilot speaking, there is a cobra loose on the airplane" "Now there are a dozen cobras loose on the plane"

Remember to also check out the butter cow at the Iowa State Fair while you're visiting the 16 foot security threat.

Oh, and those Jr. Donuts on the triangle between the Butter Cow Building (Agricultural Building?) and the Fair Directors building...

Freshly fried sugary goodness.

IWOA-Desmoines- Des Moines, Iowa featured the popular "Snakes Alive" exhibit today at a fair.

Cooter MacDavis, a long time fair attendee, and snake skin collector, traveled all the way from Buttfark, Alabama to enjoy the show.

"Them dam things is 15 feets long," Cooter exclaimed. "Now, I ain't no expert er nuthin, but I reckon they don't gets that big."

Meanwhile the "Snakes-Dead," and "Snakes-The human ones" exhibits received relatively litte attention from the family dominated atmosphere. a

"It's kind of like having a driver's license. You just have to have one," police Sgt. Max Halverson said. "They didn't let us know it was coming."

There's no such thing as a snake license?

So he got himself a dog license, and crossed out the word "dog" and wrote in the word "snake" in crayon. Problem solved.

Ya know, I think the real story here is that Des Moins actually has an international airport
2003-08-06 09:27:27 PM
We've had one here for decades, grizdog. It's also the home of the Air National Guard base and has some Fed Ex and UPS sorting/shipping plants nearby too.

Of course, most of the flights go to Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, et al. But I there are the occasional flights to Mexico, Canada, et al.
2003-08-07 12:49:33 AM
All you need for an international airport is customs. We've got that. I think we used to have 1 flight daily to Toronto, but that it got cancelled.

Hehe, no pic from the SNL skit? Just one mention?
2003-08-07 12:55:19 PM
Actually, I believe Des Moines is a pretty significant UPS hub. They built a new sorting facility and have a decent collection of planes for a city the size of DSM... out of the 260 or so planes they have, there are usually at least 3-4 sitting on the tarmac in DSM at all times.

And yes, DSM Int'l Airport has been the butt of many jokes for some 25+ years.
