So, they're taking Facebook's privacy settings as an example, then.

Somehow, I feel reasonably certain that my profile information will never be co-opted by a website called "Lovely Faces"

Mark Zuckerberg, the company's founder, made his name at Harvard in 2003 by scraping the names and photos of fellow classmates off school servers to feed a system called FaceMash. With the photos, Zuckerberg created a controversial system that pitted one co-ed against another, by allowing others to vote on which one was better looking.

I have had a private page for years. No spam, ads(ad block plus) or any problems. All my friends are real friends that I actually know.

In between polishing the belt onion and chasing kids off your lawn do you trade stories about walking 5 miles to school, uphill both ways?

I have a facebook profile. There is nothing ON it except my name and it's not even accessible to anyone nor can it be found through a search unless you are already friends with me. *I* will control who has my private info - thank you. Facebook clearly hasn't shown that they are capable of handling that ability.

About the only thing it is handy for (as far as I am concerned) is chatting with people I normally wouldn't take the time to call or email to say "hi".

Professional marketing, actually.

Any other reason is pretty much just attention whoring. Well, so is marketing. But that's AW'ing for profit. And that there is just plain patriotic.

95% of them are spam accounts designed to get you to some affiliate based website. Most people (that I know anyways) on Facebook already have their profiles locked down, so you can't see pretty much anything on their "public" profile.

From FB's TOS:

So basically it should read:

Jumping on the bandwagon, which seems ironic, but I refuse to set up a Facebook account for this reason also. Plus, I'm an adult and not a Stepford wife, so there are two more reasons.

All of you "I don't have a Facebook" people probably aren't worth talking to anyway.

You have a Fark account. Having a Facebook page is really not much different.

Oh! Look! "Pawn takes the King" claims to be from ft worth, Texas. May as well have a Facebook page. That's about all I have on my Facebook page beyond a few vacation photos I have locked to share only with RL friends.

It's silly how many anti-Facebook people don't mind publishing their photos on Flickr or such. Facebook is only as powerful as you let it be. It's a great place to keep up with old friends you might otherwise completely lose touch with. You don't have to do the ridiculous Twitter-from-the-toilet, but you can post major life events to let people know what you're up to.

Attacked? It's linked to on Fark. The page is Farked. Pretty efficient DDoS.

I have a Facebook. And I use it a lot. Mostly because I hate the phone, and my associates are scattered across the globe. I don't have any sensitive information attached to it; all the little privacy options are engaged; I don't "friend" anyone I don't know personally and well. I have never experienced the scary-scary dangers or the shocking violations of keeping a basic profile on a social networking site, yet I hear about them all the time. What am I doing wrong?

I always thought of Facebook as being used for dating/trying to find sex purposes anyway. At least, a good portion of the time. This site is just the next logical step.

You need to post your home address, phone number and social security number, for starters. Then turn off all those privacy settings. That should do it.

Facebook is awesome. I'm in touch with tons of people I would never have been able to stay in touch with, and/or people I wanted to reconnect with but would have never found otherwise. Got to go to a football game recently with an old friend I'd lost touch with. I hired another friend for a gig recently that I would have never found except for FB. I promote my films there. I interact with family members I don't see as often due to geography. The list goes on. I'm not the kind of person who just randomly calls or emails old friends, so for me it's a great social tool that has honestly enriched my life. I wish I'd had it earlier in life -- there are still a lot of old friends out there that I wonder about.

Sure, there are people who post minute-by-minute updates about what their kids are doing, but you can put those people on ignore. What info you post, and what info you read, is completely under your control. I really don't get the hate.

The only people I know who don't use it are folks to just hate people to begin with.

That's exactly the thing. They do care. The people who I have as friends on Facebook, that is. The issue is that people like you don't care, which pleases me to no end. I'd be disturbed if you DID care.

You probably care what Hollywood stars do on a daily basis, which I couldn't care less about. This makes you much sadder than anyone who communicates with their RL friends on Facebook.

It's too bad that you don't know anyone who cares enough about your life to want to hear you talk or post about it. I pity you.

Aero,
based on your profile, we probably agree on a lot of things (seriously), but please tell me how posting on Fark is endangering my personal info?

Honestly, if you can acquire any information about me based on this or any other Fark post, please post it for all to see.

It would be cool if there was a place you could text your photos in one place that everybody could see all at once. Then instead of having to call up a hundred people to see whose around you could just post your plans for the bar and invite a bunch of people out.

We should call it uploadyourphotosandtextupdates.com. i think it would do really well
