I support this idea. Mainly for a what the hell purpose. And it would be cool to travel to Australia without ever leaving the country.
2003-07-17 02:16:35 AM
Adding Austrailia would bring a whole new meaning to the "Southern States." I wonder which would be more retarded.
2003-07-17 02:20:55 AM
If Australia became a state would Australian women still find American accents sexy?
2003-07-17 02:22:38 AM
Hmmm, I don't think the diversity police will allow the US to become that much whiter.
2003-07-17 02:23:22 AM
Hahaha! Here's one of this guy's reasons:

* Fielding teams in the US national basketball, baseball and gridiron competitions.

C'mon Austrialia, don't do it for the national pride, do it for the sports!
2003-07-17 02:24:31 AM
Wouldn't Australia have to be multiple states? I think it is far to big to be just one state.
2003-07-17 02:25:46 AM
Bah... that professor is a farking idiot.

All the things he reckons is wrong with the country is due to the present government.

And another thing: I don't think that the selling off of public assets would be reverted if Australia became part of the US.

Sorry, I got nuttin funny about this one.
2003-07-17 02:25:50 AM
I am a proud Australian - I'm proud of who I am, I'm proud of the country I was born in, and I'm proud of the country I live in.

I have no issues with America or Americans. World War II showed just how well our countries can work together against a common foe.

Calling Australia and "Unreformed Society" due wholly and solely on the results of a referendum into the direction our society should take (whether to remain a part of the British empire or to become a republic) is baseless and idiotic. We do have culture and we do have an international identity.

If this idea even came to a referendum, I, for one, for vote against it.
2003-07-17 02:26:32 AM
ok wait australian women think american accents are sexy? I'm so buying a ticket.

I say come on in, I've always liked Australians.
2003-07-17 02:27:10 AM
Of course its unlikely, that's why the guy gave it a 20 percent chance. 50 percent or less = unlikely.
2003-07-17 02:27:14 AM
Exactly what Lucanus said. Australia rocks and I wanna keep it that way!
2003-07-17 02:27:27 AM
HUH? This sounds more like an Onion article.
2003-07-17 02:27:44 AM
I dunno. After that Abby Winters site and all. Australians have a strange infatuation with the correlation between faces and vaginal lips.
2003-07-17 02:28:07 AM
They'd have to learn to spell like 'Merkins. "Defense", not "defence". And so on.

Otherwise, it could be fairly cool.
2003-07-17 02:28:08 AM

Hmmm, I don't think the diversity police will allow the US to become that much whiter.

Huh? The U.S. has far more non-whites than Europe or Canada. The US, in fact has one of the most diverse socities on Earth. Many say its the diversity that is the cause of and solution to all of our problems.
2003-07-17 02:28:16 AM
"Visiting research fellow"?

You mean someone paid him to come over here and say these things?
2003-07-17 02:28:25 AM
the sun will never set on the american empire!!
2003-07-17 02:29:06 AM
SOoooo Mel Gibson would actually be an American in "The Patriot" now?
2003-07-17 02:30:37 AM
Auckum, kind of like beer, eh?

Now I love America as much as anybody and as an American I think it would be great to have Australia as a state, but why would any self-respecting Australian want to be an American. What the fu*k is wrong with Australia? Nothing. I think we've got a better chance of seeing god than this ever happening
2003-07-17 02:31:05 AM
I wouldn't mind the Aussies coming on over. I'd take them over the Canadians. No offense to any Canadian Farkers. You see, Canada is sort of like the nice, older couple who lives upstairs. Australia is more like the loud neighbor you like to get drunk with.
2003-07-17 02:33:17 AM
danlbrau, I want to ask you, do you really think that if there actually was a chance for Australia to become a state then whatever group of people you are talking about when you say "diversity police" would openly oppose that because Australians are too white?
2003-07-17 02:33:25 AM
It would certainly be the BIGGEST state....

Take that, all you Texans... and Alaskans!
2003-07-17 02:35:30 AM
No chance in hell am I ever going to call myself an American if this did go through.

besides, most Australians would be firmly against this idea, thats for sure
2003-07-17 02:35:35 AM
When I think of Tim Tams I think of Bumjube.
2003-07-17 02:36:06 AM
The Australians would have to learn to spell like Americans instead of Brits, and they'd probably have to be weaned off the metric system. Not that there's anything wrong with metric (it's really more sensible than the imperial system), but it would be easier for 20 million Aussies to switch than 300 million Americans.
2003-07-17 02:36:53 AM
Well we could do with competition to better our communication industry here.
You guys could do with the better beer.

We now need that Missile Defence Deal, thanks Korea.
USA could gain air travel respect: Qantas.

But could an Aussie ever be President?
2003-07-17 02:37:34 AM
"I'll trade you my Texas and Florida for your Australia."

"Oh please! Are you kidding me?!?"

"Okay, I'll throw in South Carolina."

"Ermm... well..."

"Okay! Okay! And New Jersey!"

"Nope. Not gonna do it."

When the damn aussies learn that it's my god-given right to play all the violent video games I want and that my guns (even though I don't own any, but still) will not be surrendered until my death, then I may consider allowing them to be a part of our blessed union of states.

Oh, and you will have to feed Steve Irwin to a crocodile.
2003-07-17 02:38:05 AM
hey as a texan I still say come on, you know if you want to. Its not that I think there is some reason that Australians shouldn't want to be Australians. I just can't imagine why you wouldn't want to be an American

right on DrToast about the canadians. Could those guys be more boring?
2003-07-17 02:38:49 AM
Wait wait wait... you keep talking about whether or not Aussieland would want this. I say, who says that America wants Aussieland?

We should have a sign:
Your national economy must be this high before you can enter.

Unless Aussieland could contribute a massive boost to the national economy, ya'll just can stay over there in the middle of nowhere.

Besides, think of how costly it would be to tow Aussieland over to American waters. Just not feasible.
2003-07-17 02:39:01 AM
try use the imperial system for anything usefull, like engineering problems or maths involving conversions. Square m to square km, volumes, masses, its all easily doable in your head under metric.

the imperial system sucks balls.
2003-07-17 02:39:22 AM
That would suck if Yahoo Serious was an American.
2003-07-17 02:40:19 AM
Mel Gibson was born in the US. As far as Australia becoming a US state it'll never happen. I'd like to know how many people pummeled that 'visiting guest speaker' moron after his speech.
2003-07-17 02:40:53 AM
I think this is just a plot to allow Rupert Murdoch to run for President of the US.
2003-07-17 02:43:36 AM
Thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard. What a farking idiot that guy is.

And give up on the whole "foreign women find my accent sexy" crap.
2003-07-17 02:44:42 AM
The Asians are gonna' own tha big island in the end anyway.
2003-07-17 02:46:56 AM
Asian like India or Turkey?
2003-07-17 02:48:06 AM
at the risk of spreading stupid stereotypes:

Not gonna happen - even if our Prime Minister acts like he's American!

Besides, the US couldn't handle it if their "World Series" sports included "The World" because they'd lose to us.
2003-07-17 02:51:23 AM
Foster's oil cans rock
2003-07-17 02:51:24 AM
No. I am pretty sure the best U.S Baseball team could beat the best Autralian one.
2003-07-17 02:52:07 AM
Sounds to me like this here professor took a might powerful draw on his crack pipe before he gave this speech.
2003-07-17 02:52:48 AM
What is this an LBO? What government is going to vote itself out of existence?

Someone's read Jennifer Government way too many times.
2003-07-17 02:56:36 AM
Our sports already have non-American teams.
2003-07-17 02:56:39 AM
Does anyone remember when Marcos showed up on Nightline suggesting that he would like to see the Phillipines become our 51st state?

At the time, the Phillipines had more than 50,000,000 people in it. Like there was anyway in hell that anyone would see want to see a 51st state with more Congressman than the next two highest states combined.
2003-07-17 02:56:40 AM
Now, this wouldn't have anything to do with Korea pointing nukes at Australia, would it?
