Bread + cheese

That's really all I need.

bah, not nearly enough gravy.

That brings back memories. My family occasionally had DIY Danish sandwiches for dinner. I may have to go out and buy some thin sliced pumpernickel.

What's the point of an open faced sandwich? I always close mine before I eat it.

Danish food, even fancy Danish food, comes down to smoked fish, soft cheese, pickled vegetables, sour cream and dill on coarse bread. Pass.

You have to respect people who live in a cold climate but still eat lots of cold, crunchy food. No steaming heaps of greasy, soft mush -- give me some texture, please. I love the "briskness" of their cuisine.

That green shiat looks like it belongs in a yard, not on a sandwich.

Scandinavians make some tasty ass sandwiches.

They pretty much go into the fridge, look at what they have and make something tasty.

Though my father in law makes some weird ass ones.

Pumpernickel with cream cheese, topped with orange Abba caviar and pomegranate seeds stands out as one of the strangest.

In my experience, the Danes (and Swedish) love it. You can't over use it according to one of them.

Disagree. I like jalapenos, but not on that. YMMV.

It's not a sandwich with just one piece of bread, it's just food in a pile.

Danish open face sandwiches with the exception of smoked salmon/gravalax on white bread are not an easy taste to acquire. A few are quite good, most are mediocre, and some are downright revolting (while some of their curried/spiced mayonaise is really good, much of it invokes a gag reflex, including some versions of Remoulade).

I grew up with it, especially pickled herring, so I'm used to it abd like. Except for my friends with similar Baltic backgrounds or are of east european Jewish descent, though, I never offer it to anyone.

That Danish food is great. My wife is Danish. She and her mom and grandmother make sandwiches that look like that ... and THEY ARE GOOD. She cooks a lot of stuff that I can't pronounce well but I can sure eat it. The bread in those pictures looks like the Danish Rye bread My wife bakes for our family. It is heavy and a bit hard to chew, but it fills you up and it is healthy stuff. I broke a steak knife cutting a loaf of it one time. Like the author of that article, I have broken many of those Danish eating rules. Fortunately, my wife seems to still like me anyway.

So do you pick that up or use a knife and fork? Seems like the eating would be very impractical without a knife and fork.

Was in Denmark a month ago. The smorrebrod were alright, but I would enjoy them more if they weren't doused with mayonnaise.

Also...

FTFA: "It's hard not to admire a country that celebrates and expresses itself with fresh, artfully arranged sandwiches and a beer or schnapps."

Fark Danish beer. It's like they took equal parts PBR and urine, then figured out a way to make it pour flat yet give you horrible gas.

jaytkay: What Danes might look like

Yeah, about that ...

They don't usually post pictures of the non-cute ones on the internet. Plus, the hot ones are some of the most courted women in the world. Your game had better be world class if you go after those. And while all women age physically, Scandinavian women emotionally age very badly.

If you're goal is hot blondes, you should really consider Poland and the Baltics before Scandinavia.

/had to listen to frustrations of many guys who went to Scandinavia and left very dissapointed

THANK YOU! I'm half Danish and have been trying to tell everyone for years how over rated their beer is. Sure, it's better than Miller, but that's like bragging you beat the gold medalist in the special olympics 100m dash.

/great beer countries of Europe: Ireland, UK, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic - everything else is pretty meh

Some people need help with the verb sandwich, as in, to sandwich something between two pieces of bread.
