Quasar: I thought conservatives loved Israel.

Well, it's not so much that they "love" Israel, as much it is the fact that they don't want the Muslins killin' all them Jews 'cause the Bible says that Christians are the ones that are supposed to do that after Jesus comes back.

Whoa now, that'll get you fired from your cushy reporter gig.

I'm not saying Jesus is bad. I'm just saying he was a Jew.

Quasar: I thought conservatives loved Israel.

They believe the holy temple has to be rebuilt in Jerusalem. That has nothing to do with loving Israel or Jews. Just a means to an end.

It goes WAY beyond being a Jew. Cook's "afraid" Straus is a gay-loving, pro-choice, Libertarian-leaning RINO.

You know, I notice in all the submissions about this, there is nothing about the Texas GOP or the national GOP telling this guy to knock this shiat off. Sounds like approval to me.

I wonder if the ovens are bigger in Texas as well?

Since I in no way, shape or form support Cook's stance, but most Republicans do, please tell us where their party is doing anything abnormal in this case...

Republicans don't like Democrats. The Jewish in DC (and elsewhere in the US) are overwhelmingly Democrats.

Republicans don't like gays. Gay rights activists are primarily Democrats.

Republicans don't like abortion. Pro-Choice activists are primarily Democrats.

Where have you been living that you haven't seen this for decades already, and think it's something new in GOP politics (Texas or national)? I'm really wondering how you can think this is new.

Farkin' Dominionists.

Quasar: I thought conservatives loved Israel.

Well, they're kinda honorary Christians sometimes (via the ol' "Judeo-Christian values" thing), but not QUITE as good as if you can get a real Christian in there. I mean, you know, they're sorta on the right track and right thinkin' (assuming they're religious Republican Jews, that is, and not dirty liberal Democrats) but there's that whole part where they're misguided and don't accept Jesus. But they mean well. Call 'em second best. But that's still good, right?

...WAY better than Muslims, anyway. So yeah they support Israel in Israel's day to day conflicts. But in the end game? They'll see the light and convert to Christianity. Or they can burn.

/and that's not even counting the "but they have horns" crowd

2010-12-06 08:17:28 PM
Heh, Texass.

2010-12-06 08:36:30 PM
He added that he prefers Christian candidates, but isn't anti-Semitic. "They're some of my best friends," he said of Jews, naming two friends of his.

Ah, the old "I'm not a racist, some of my best friends are black" argument...

*sigh*

fine, keep making us look bad Texas GOP...

downpaymentblues: They believe the holy temple has to be rebuilt in Jerusalem. That has nothing to do with loving Israel or Jews. Just a means to an end.

That is also why Christian conservatives are huge supporters of Israel remaining as is, with the West Bank and other occupied territories remaining under Israeli control so Israel has her biblical borders. Otherwise Jesus won't come back.

/every time I read an article like this I think it's time to write another check for the JNF

2010-12-06 09:11:45 PM
FTFA: So what makes this noteworthy? Straus is Jewish, and some far-right activists in Texas have a problem with that.

So, this means that far-right activists in Texas are aligned with the Arab extremists in the Middle East? That's comforting.

/you know who else had a problem with Jews, don't you?

2010-12-06 09:25:31 PM
Christian Dominionists are inherently evil people, and the Constitution should be interpreted so as to forbid not just them, but any flavor of dominionist, from holding public office. It's really simple -- if you are actively trying to bring religion into government, you are acting against the Constitution and against the will of the Founders, so you should be forbidden from doing so by force of law.

No, they don't. Not most.
It's a minority but a very vocal insane minority.
Don't let these batsh*t crazy f*cks ruin Republicanism for those that actually believe in it.

Besides, there are lots of well-known Republican Jews. Writers, lawyers, bankers.

Most Republicans are not Anti-Semitic. However, pretty much all American Anti-Semites are Republican.

The more important question is:

What does Kinky Friedman have to say about this?

2010-12-06 09:43:36 PM
Dang. They've really thrown it into high gear in their drive for a "TEXAS" Fark tag.

There was a time when Republicans were a small, elitist minority in Texas. Prior to the emergence of the "Southern Strategy," I suppose it was...

2010-12-06 09:43:41 PM
Well, they don't call Republican's "Little Eichmann's" for no reason.

2010-12-06 09:46:34 PM
My Southerner friends get mad at me when I mock the South. But, really, THIS IS WHY.

Stop doing this stuff! Join the rest of us in the 21st century where it's not a big scandal if the guy you elected turns out to be a Jew.

As long as the people there keep doing insane bigoted crap like this, I'm going to mock them.

To be fair I do agree with him that it's not as much because Straus is a Jew than the fact that he's not a Xian.

I'm sure if he was to ch"vs convert to xianity he would be loved and appreciated by these crowds.

Well except the far-right facists but yeah fark them.

shivashakti: However, pretty much all American Anti-Semites are Republican.

Yeah, how about no.

2010-12-06 09:49:16 PM
Smart Jews know that the party that demonizes and scapegoats Muslims, immigrants, gays and Hispanics isn't too fond of Jews either.

2010-12-06 09:49:38 PM

shivashakti: where it's not a big scandal if the guy you elected turns out to be a Jew.

It would be 'as big a scandal' if the guy was a Muslim, or a Buddhist, or an Atheist (or I suspect a Catholic).

It's not about who he is, it's about who he is not.

Way beyond those I'd say. "I got into politics to put Christian conservatives into office," Cook says.

Want to get conservatives into office, sure. Require a religious test, no.

The next few years, at least, are going to be a relatively dark time for social progress in America.

Only the ones who are salivating over the prospect of global armageddon. It's more of a "we need Israel to survive so it can participate in the upcoming biblical apocalypse" rather than any particular like for Jews.

2010-12-06 10:03:37 PM
Of course, a lot of Republicans got pissed at Straus when he got the job of Speaker of the House, and promptly appointed Democrats to almost half of the committee chair spots. That got a lot of old-time politicians mad (they wanted those positions).

FormlessOne: The next few years, at least, are going to be a relatively dark time for social progress in America.

Yeah, Texas has been there for awhile!

2010-12-06 10:03:50 PM
The reason most Texas Republicans want Straus out has nothing to do with his religion, and everything to do with the fact that he's not particularly conservative compared to the other candidates in the race, and his biggest supporters are Democrats. The fact that the Austin American-Statesman endorsed him and called him a "moderate" (i.e., a liberal, at least by Republican standards) is the kiss of death.

If he were solidly conservative, Ken Paxton and Warren Chisum wouldn't be running against him, regardless of his religion.

Party Boy: Norman Podhoretz - Why Are Jews Liberals?
I'm hoping buyer's remorse on Obama will finally cause a Jewish shift to the right.

Ill just leave this here, for the lulz.

The funny this is that Bush had a lot of Jewish support (including from the NY Times) because of his stance on Israel (which was basically, "Give them whatever they want").
