Great, that's our prison service, not only are the sentences too short but they get a wage, 3 hots and a cot and now the prison officers, who are supposed to be aiding in punishment are farking them.

When you have male guards in a female prison, the prisoners are more likely to assault that guard. But in a male prison, it'd be discrimination to not have female officers.

Prison guards are often corrupt, and have issues. They joined up for a reason. I'm not sure what the psychological issues are called, but it tends towards wanting and enjoying power over helpless people.

Prisons are horrible places. I knew a guy who went to a big prison to fix their medical equipment. He dreaded it. He said it made him, "Think dark things the whole day."

Prison guards ARE often corrupt, and often do have issues.

However I don't believe there is a mental condition or a certain personality type predisposed to being a prison guard, or that most prison guards want power over helpless people.

Prison guards ARE often corrupt, and often do have issues.

Perhaps I stated it too strongly. After some thought (which is rare on my part) I could reverse myself: Any person who feels like they need power over helpless people would make a very poor prison guard. I doubt they test for that. Do they test for that? I'm pretty sure you have more information about this subject.

There are lots of psych profiles. Why someone would want to work in a prison would be one of the more interesting ones.

I've known two people who actually wanted the job. They didn't need the job. I've never been sure what to make of that.

Which goes back to my comment about a psych profile. I have a theory that "good" cops and "bad" cops like their jobs equally, but for different reasons.

In my experience the good cops don't like the bad cops and it makes them want to stop being a cop. Like the people I know, they wanted out of being a guard because of the corruption, and things like the article. the environment didn't help any either. They described it as feeling like they were in prison too.

Its called being broke, the prison gangs run the prisons, the guards are there for the ride. Yes prison guards are corrupt but power hungry?? That illusion of power is broken rather quickly.

If you want power, become a cop to get your street level bullying jollies or a senior government bureaucrat, GS-15 or SES, for some serious farking power. Even the president can't fark with you much. In the old days you joined the IRS before Reagan and congress declawed them

An ex-supervisor of mine retired to Alaska and put me as a reference on an application to the state prison there. Silly man. He had some serious post-Nam bi-polar shiat going on; almost threw him off the control tower once when he got in my face. Long story short, they called and I told them sure, I couldn't think of a better place for someone that shouldn't interact with the general public. Still looking for work last time I heard.

You have it backwards about the male guards in female prisons. They're worried about male guards raping the female prisoners. Apparently, it's never occurred to people who run prisons to have the rapists be the prisoners and the non-rapists be the guards.
