All this over a neighhorhood dispute between the Petkov's and Kathleen's grandmother, Becky Rose.

The first time I read this I interpreted it that Becky Rose was both of the families grandmother, and I was thinking that's gotta be an awkward family reunion.

2010-10-12 12:53:38 PM
Have fun, kid.

2010-10-12 12:54:06 PM
No way. That chick on House is much older than that.

Without the neighbors playing their part, this little girl probably never would have gotten a $9,000 shopping spree to begin with so I really hope she's planning to send them a thank you note for all their hard work.

No, it's just really dusty in here and my eyes are watering. Go away. It's allergies, I tell you!

2010-10-12 12:54:53 PM
From a previous story:

A member of Kathleen's family says the bad blood started about two-years ago after the two families had a falling out over a birthday party at the Rose house. At the party kids were using a "bounce-house" and playing games in the front yard. The source says that Jennifer Petkov texted someone in the Rose family, asking if her kids could come to the event. A response to the text did not come quickly enough and it angered Jennifer. According to the Rose family, she's been harassing them ever since.

WTF lady? You're taunting a sick seven year old over somebody not texting you back fast enough?

CSB:

I met a guy at a party last weekend who had just finished biking across Canada, raising money to help find a cure for Huntington's disease. There clinical trials currently under way for some treatments.

His aunt and uncle both suffer with Huntington's disease. His goal is to raise $30,000, he's at $29k and something (his website needs to be updated).
The money goes to the Huntington Society.

So anyway, since this story is on fark, it made me think, maybe some Farkers might want to help him get closer to his goal.

Link (new window)

I think he's got till the end of the month.

Also more info about Huntington's, the Huntington Society, his ride, etc. on his site

Do the Make-A-Wish people know about this?

2010-10-12 12:56:45 PM
I feel really good about this outcome, at least the point possible. The girl get's to spend a great day getting a ton of toys, and then get's to hand out even more at the local childrens hospital which if she's like most little kids will make her even happier.

The neighbors gets to get to hunker down and watch all of this all the way still facing the fallout from their community.

2010-10-12 12:56:46 PM
Nothing like having the entire world suddenly turn and look at you with disdain to make you eat a little humble pie....

/was hoping someone would off that crazy blonde neighbor biatch

I'm glad she apologized, but it wasn't sincere. At all. I still want to punch her.

BUT they apologized.....

After getting death threats, the house was egged, Protective Services had to check on their kids and the idiot male half was suspended from his job.

I guess they are sorry..... that their stupidity got on the news.

BWAAHAAHAAA!!!! Harassing people getting harassed FTW!!!

I hope they buy plenty of really loud outdoor toys. Preferably ones that can launch flaming projectiles into the neighbor's yard. Or maybe just throw a Super Happy Fun Ball or two through their windows.

It would be great if they bought a bounce house since that's what apparently got these ingrates jealous and angry to begin with.

You don't die of huntington's at age 7.

If you have it you'll die from it, sure. But not at age 7.

Most people die of huntington's between age 30 and 40.

That's the sole reason it keeps getting passed on, it doesn't present noticeable symptoms until after child bearing ages.

2010-10-12 1:04:01 PM
this whole story is really lacking with the fact that no one has yet to post said photos

2010-10-12 1:04:04 PM
If you are on cell phone number terms with your neighbors they probably assumed you were going to send your brats to their house anyway. I'd have 500 kids in my yard if I blew one up. This chick is a psycho.

What kind of sociopath do you have to be to torment a little girl about her terminal disease? That couple deserves every bit of punishment the community has apparently sent their way thus far.

2010-10-12 1:06:14 PM
Updated video shows the neighbor and her apology. Looked half assed if you asked me. She was probably getting death threats and such once the story got to the internet.

MrHappyRotter: Without the neighbors playing their part, this little girl probably never would have gotten a $9,000 shopping spree to begin with so I really hope she's planning to send them a thank you note for all their hard work.

At first I was sorta hoping that this was merely a conspiracy between the neighbors to cheer up the little girl, then I realized that this would be as convoluted as the reverse vampire conspiracy to use 9/11 to sell those crappy "coins" with the popup Twin Towers to the general public.

I think the girl should take pictures of herself going through the checkout with a boatload of toys and a fist full of cash, Photoshop the neighbor's head on the checkout person's body and post it on Facebook.

\Though that would make it seem like the neighbors actually have a job, so I guess it would be a compliment.

Yes, because 7 year olds suffering seizures and loss of gross motor control is just dandy, so long as they don't die.

Of course, there's also the fun fact of her family realizing that she'll probably be dead within 10 years.

Thank you, Mr. Ray of Sunshine!

Also, it is awesome that Kathleen is happy, but isn't the real winner of this promotion the toy store? Not to be snarky, but all the donations that came in basically went to paying the store. He just got an extra $9k worth of business through this girl. Not that the idea wasn't good, but still...

jake3988 You don't die of huntington's at age 7.

If you have it you'll die from it, sure. But not at age 7.

Most people die of huntington's between age 30 and 40.

That's the sole reason it keeps getting passed on, it doesn't present noticeable symptoms until after child bearing ages.

She could have had genetic testing, but more likely she has Juvenile Huntington's, which is much worse and kills much faster than Huntington's (and I can't think of many things that would be worse than regular Huntington's disease, so it must be really bad).

One of my best friends has HD - she's tested positive genetically but is (thankfully) still symptom-free at age 34. It is a HORRIBLE disease. We watched her mom die of it. Just awful, gut wrenching, family destroying stuff. I donated my kid's umbilical cord blood for research, and I'm doing it again with my current pregnancy.

I would have a dozen kids if I thought it would get her a cure in time.

Mrs Petkov's husband, Scott, 30, told the Detroit News that his wife's 'brutal honesty' has caused his family to 'not get along with a lot of people.'
He said the fallout of the Facebook posting resulted in his suspension with pay from his job as a forklift repairman in nearby Warren.
He said his employer is considering firing him.
The eldest of the Petkovs' four children was also sent home from school after getting into an argument with a classmate who confronted him about the Internet photos, said the couple.
'My husband is a good person and I hope he doesn't lose his job. I hope our family doesn't lose his job. I'm the bad person,' said Mrs Petkov.

Actually the guy brought three $100+ toys from his store to the girl and her sister. He also arranged a limo to take them to the store, lunch at a nice fancy place after her shopping spree, and is cutting a check straight to the dad for 10% of whatever is raised ($1200 check so far). She gets to have an awesomely fun day and lots of sick kids get to have their day brightened to. Who cares if it is in his store or not? A local toy store each year has a "wishing" tree. You pick a kid, buy the toys on the list, and donate them every Christmas. I am not anonymous, and I am not going to talk about anonymous.

IF you want to visit 4chan, turn on private browsing. Most of the spam is gone now, but you have to type in a captcha. Threads to avoid are "boy" threads, furry threads, and "is it teim" threads. These will contain illegal images, but on the plus side they get deleted fast.

The best threads are the "laugh you lose", "baww" threads, image meme threads, and social justice threads and the occasional legal porn thread.

Good luck.

If you have it you'll die from it, sure. But not at age 7.

Most people die of huntington's between age 30 and 40.

That's the sole reason it keeps getting passed on, it doesn't present noticeable symptoms until after child bearing ages.

Do some research on Early Onset Huntington's Chorea. Ten percent of Huntington patients display symptoms in childhood or adolescence.

Yeah, now that the internet has made their parents unemployed, they will probably be homeless soon. Pfffft, what's a little collateral damage. I guess their mother sould have figured that there were plenty of people out there just like her or worse. Maybe there can be a charity drive for these kids once they are on the streets?

Pretty sure the dude with the toy store is making them pay cost for the toys, so he wont be making anything off of it. Chances are she would have gotten what most terminally ill 13 year olds get, plenty of sympathy and a loving family and probably a surprise birthday party for the ages or something.

Reward is proportional to the tragedy (obviously not always) and in this case her tragedy was compounded by idiotic sociopaths next door. Therefore society's impulse to even that out grew proportionally.

Seriously? Are you an ass in real life or do you just play one on Fark?

From TFA
Hans Masing of Tree Town Toys in Ann Arbor has raised more than $9,000 for a shopping spree for Kathleen. Some of the money donated coming as far away as Japan, Australia and Europe. Any money that Kathleen does not spend will go toward local childrens hospitals.

They guy helped raise the money, undoubtedly put in some of his own and is donating what she doesn't spend and you think they should say thanks by taking it across town or out of town to his competitor? What is more pathetic is that you find this kind of behavior suspicious. You are a sad excuse for a human being.

I don't think the store are a-holes for making you shop with them because in the end, a kid is happy and that's ALL I care about.

Sent tons of pizza to their house, free Korans, Bibles, ordered Mormons to come for a visit - but worst of all hit their place of employment hard including sending letters and emails to the husband's place of employ - and flooding the company forums. He's currently suspended with pay.

It's not a crime, it's a tort, which is civil. This particular one is basically a recourse for whenever someone is harassing you pasts the bounds of civilized behaviour.

In this case, where the harassment is not anonymous, well documented, and clearly beyond the pale, you should be able to legitimately sue them into a smoking hole in the ground.

Meh. Kids suffer for their parents bad decisions all the time. The solution is for the parents to try not to make such bad decisions, not for us, as a society, to refrain from punishing the parents just because we don't want to hurt the kids.

In this case, I'm more sympathetic because the kids have to live with those shiatty parents. I mean, if her idea of a rational response to an imagined slight is this dramatic, can you imagine what their home life must be like?

queezyweezel: Yep. I spoke with Hans a few days ago, and he's spending a few hundred bucks out of pocket for the limo and lunch. all of the donation money is going to toys (which he's buying at cost, and delivering himself) for her and the hospitals. He's good people.

You might want to update the map on your profile. Usually if I am good enough friends to call someone up on the phone, I might have actually visited the state they live in and own a business in once in my lifetime.

I spoke with Hans before making a donation you dipshiat. Why would I need to visit Michigan to call a guy who has his phone number listed for his toy store?

Weak troll is so, so weak. Let me just interrupt your furious gibberish scribbling for a moment to suggest that people not follow your cynical example when examining the charity of the toy store owner.

1. Toys 'R' Us did not offer charity in this situation, Hans Masing of Tree Town Toys did.

2. Toys 'R' Us would also have "forced" her to spend the money in their store. Do you honestly think a major corporation is less 'opportunistic' than a small business owner?

3. A dying child was made briefly happy after an extended period of harassment from her subhuman neighbors. Are you really going to try to find fault with that? It seems that the Tree Town Toys guy went out of his way to give her stuff, including a check. A lot of other sick kids will benefit as well. What else, in your delusional opinion, should he have done? Handed over his entire bank account or store stock? Is that something that Toys 'R' Us has done? Is that something that you have personally done for a dying child, hence your position upon your high horse?

4. Go skullfark yourself.

jake3988: You don't die of huntington's at age 7.

If you have it you'll die from it, sure. But not at age 7.

Most people die of huntington's between age 30 and 40.

That's the sole reason it keeps getting passed on, it doesn't present noticeable symptoms until after child bearing ages.

From the earlier story mentioned in TFA, emphasis mine:

Her family says 7-year-old Kathleen Edward is in the final stages of a degenerative brain disorder diagnosed as Huntington's Disease - the same disease which killed her mother, Laura, when she was only 24.

It's hereditary. Her mom died at 24, and probably started showing symptoms at a similar age. If she's showing symptoms now, the diagnosis - and prognosis - is certain.

I don't think you've thought this all the way through. The cost of care required for owning an elephant (health care, food, housing, etc.) is prohibitively expensive. Also, the logistics of elephant transportation would make getting it to her doorstep extremely difficult even in the best case scenario. The money goes to the Huntington Society.

Yeah, blindly.....Are you this stupid IRL, or is this just an Internet thing? How is calling the guy to verify that his business is legit before making a donation blind trust?

StreetlightInTheGhetto: Satanicpuppy: StreetlightInTheGhetto: That's fine.

However - and I said this repeatedly in the other thread - I don't think her children and possibly husband really deserve to suffer along with her.

It just doesn't work that way. If I went out and killed someone, I couldn't turn around and say, "My kids will starve if you put me in jail!" and expect any leniency. Likewise, this woman can't turn evil whore mode up to 11, and then say, "Hey wait, it's not right for my crazy actions to effect my family!"

Stuff you do effects your family. No two ways about it.

Well, obviously. But that doesn't mean I'm doing to be happy about it or support it (it being the entire family on the welfare rolls if dad loses his job too) (screw his wife, though).

No, you're right. We're going old testament on these motherfarkers. visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

The real issue in these cases is the lack of first hand knowledge. Everyone in the world up in arms over a media story, when, if you asked them at a party what they thought of the media, they'd all say that they distrusted the whole institution, and thought they slanted stories to further their own agendas.

2. No, I don't want him to pleasure himself, I want him to fark himself in the eye socket, which would be very painful.

You know if I was a casual observer and comparing the guy who is suspicious of a guy who is promoting his store and then getting patted on the back for giving out money that other people sent him with a guy who wants to cause people pain and suffering.....Dude you have real problems. I bet you supported your priest when he farked your brother because he was swell old fellow too.

I really don't see what is wrong with pointing out that getting other people to send you money that will be spent in your store while getting great press coverage makes you a smart business man. Seriously you people have issues.

"Dude," can you even respond coherently to any of the points raised against your weak trolling attempts? Or are you just going to throw shiatty, illogical run-on sentences around until some response makes your dick twitch?

Try again, weak troll.

Perhaps the suggestion was he skullfark himself with someone else's penis

Satanicpuppy: kregh99: Mrs Petkov's husband, Scott, 30, told the Detroit News that his wife's 'brutal honesty' has caused his family to 'not get along with a lot of people.'
I'm the bad person,' said Mrs Petkov.

story from the Daily Mail (Why does the UK have better coverage of this story than Detroit?)

It would be great if they were homeless by the end of the month.

I'm still surprised they haven't been sued. Hard to get a more clear cut example of "Intentional Infliction of Severe Emotional Distress."

I doubt the family has lots of money to go throwing around lawsuits. They have medical bills plus hospice to pay.

A legitimate question deserves a legitimate answer.

I don't think karma is out there giving little girls terminal illness just for kicks.

Things like this cannot be easily explained, but the best I can boil it down is like this.

Shiat happens.

People get cancer, get hit by buses, get struck by lightning, win the lottery. Sometimes they are good people, sometimes they are arseholes.

Huh. Is the action of karma denigrated because it occurred by the hands of humans, or actually invigorated by it?

Personally I believe the latter, although I tend to attribute it to man's essential understanding of justice. But I've been called an optimist...

The whole idea of karma is rooted in reincarnation. If something bad happens to you, it can very well be because you did something bad in a past life. And how meek and brave you are under your adversity can effect how well you are born in your next life.

All bullshiat as far as I'm concerned. Lot of early religions have hilariously obvious built-in social control mechanisms. "Don't be bad, or you'll go to hell!" "Don't be bad or you'll be reborn a dung beetle!"

Still, it's nice to believe that bad things will happen to bad people as a result of their bad actions.

Fair enough, so the balance from Karma is you get some toys 'cause I'm gonna kill you? or Was it because you're gonna die and your neighbor is a whore you get toys? When did Karma get involed is what I guess I'm asking. I clearly don't know how this karma thing works.

Thanks man, I know he'll appreciate it.

I did a research paper on a Huntington's related subject as my last project to get my degree in physiology.

It's really incredible just how horrible the disease is, and the choices it makes families make.

The guy's father, for example, didn't know if he had it or not when he decided to have him, and hence whether he was going to pass it on to someone.

Just to clarify...
1. No, they are not related. The wording is just confusing. The original dispute was between the little girl's grandmother and the Petkov's.

2. The "issue" with Grandma is that she threw a birthday party for her granddaughter that included a bounce house. Mrs. Petkov texted asking if her kids could come play too and they did not respond to her text fast enough. So yes, now they are taking it out on the little girl and her parent (singular, as her mother has already passed away from the same disease). And yes, they fail at basic humanity.

Yep, the doctor my dad and my sister's mum (Shirley) went to told
Shirley that if she wanted a baby, flip a coin. This was in 1972 so information about HD was non existent. End result was my sister. We knew a family whose wife was diagnosed but she still insisted on having babies, even with a 50/50 chance. I think she was selfish especially since she would be incapable of taking care of them.

Some of you may recall the arrested for murdering her sons, who were dying of Huntington's Disease. I don't know one person in Georgia that felt anything but pity and compassion for that woman. I can't imagine how horrible it must be to watch your child suffer like this. As the cops said to this girl's family, I can't believe they didn't go across the street and beat the hell out of the pyscho biatch wife and her spineless wuss of a husband.

Hey does anyone know what this broad's job is or was? I can see the logic that Galileo's Daughter puts forth (however, I feel TPing a house is a stupid prank, taunting a dying child is pure evil), but wouldn't you think that there are some jobs that a sociopath just shouldn't be doing? The only problem with that is that when a child has an illness or disability, parents don't have the time or inclination.

Between seizures, caring for her, sleepless nights, the emotional trauma your child and you go through, and doctors it is very stressful. That's not even taking into account that only a year ago they went through this with the mother.

I'm suprised the poor guy hansn't gone batshiat crazy. He probably just wants to spend as much time as possible with her and not dwell on anything other than loving her in what time she has left.

It happens all the time. Too many children get missed, I am sure, but Make a Wish and other organizations make it a point to promote what they do and reach out to hospitals so they can help as many children as possible.
It is NOT all warm and fuzzy, many of these children die young and it is terrible. These people just try to make the time the children do have as happy as possible.

What have you done to help?

My former employer would choose a charity to support every year and most of the time, we went with Candle Lighters. Link (new window)

I swear they would try to make people cry during their presentations, absolutely heartbreaking.

It is because of people like this that I want to buy me a HUGE stretch of land where I don't have to deal with f*cking neighbours.

I grew up next door to one of the scummiest houses I have ever seen (example: leaving their disabled kids's used diapers lying out in the yard for months on end). Well, the neighbourhood found out that they were running an illegal daycare out of the house so a few neighbours turned them in. Well, since we were their next door neighbour, they blamed us and have continually taken out on my parents/mother for the last 20 years.

//My favourite antic of theirs was about 6 years ago, by-law showed up on my moms door, saying the neighbours saw my dad poisoning their dog with bad meat. Which is really funny, considering my dad had died 4 years prior and there was no man living at the house. By-law was NOT amused by them.

Having seen screenshots of the FB posts (not to mention the woman admitted it) I don't think you even have to be an armchair psychiatrist to know she is a sociopath.

Her apology was fake and forced and only because she was getting death threats and realized her husband might lose his job.

There are bad people, and then there are people like this woman. She is pure evil. Fred Phelps level evil.

I want only bad things to happen to her for the rest of her life. Awful things.

But I am really enjoying the outcome, on both sides.

The apology was poor as most agree and was insincere. I cannot even imagine taunting a 7 year old publicly or privately. Children may behave that way but adults??? They must have been both dropped on their heads. You're neighbors, you have to try to get along and leave the kids out of it.

I never want to wish harm on anyone but this case sure makes me want to wish.

I hope they can find the cure before 'it' happens! She deserves some happiness in her life and not idiot neighbors.

I am afraid it is far to late for reasoned debate. There actions involved tormenting a child with a tightening noose around her neck. In the past this would never have entered popular consciousness. Since he is buying all the toys at cost, the toy store owner isn't making any money off the donations besides publicity. He also bought expensive toys for the girl and her siblings out of his own pocket and is cutting a check for 10% of all money donated to the father. Where did anyone ever say that he was buying toys at cost other than some guy from Colorado who claimed to talk to this guy on the phone in this thread? Show me the link. I have read the links people have posted in none of them do, Here is the best link someone gave me it says:

Kathleen is expected to arrive at the toy store around 9:30 a.m., where she'll be greeted on a red carpet by a flash mob Masing expects could approach 80 people. At the store, she'll be allowed to pick out any toys she wants for her personal collection.

From there, the limo will take Kathleen, her family and friends to the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, where they will present other sick children with thousand of dollars worth of donated toys.

Where does it say that he is giving her the presents at cost? Seriously good for the guy for seeing an opportunity to do good an profit, but don't pretend he is not profiting off of this deal.

No need to. I went through the Reddit thread. Here is what he says.

fishwish OK. Sorry to be a bit pessimistic here, but you are setting up a donation page for toys at your own toy story and you are graciously offering to chip in 10% of the donations. A 10% coupon off at a toy store is not something hard to come by. In a way it seem a bit like you have found an excellent way to drum up business for yourself.
Edit: And are $700+ worth of toys necessarily the best thing a dying girl can get? Are you sure there isn't a better use for that money for her? Sure some toys would be nice... but might there not be something better than just toys? Maybe a vacation to a theme park might be better. Or maybe her father has a better idea of what could be done with the donations.

hmasingSure, it can be interpreted that way, but it honestly isn't the case. 10% is my profit after all my costs, so I am in a break-even for this. I'll also be driving the toys in my delivery truck over 50 miles to drop them off (that's $40 in gas right there) and my staff will be spending time to get things prepped and going.
I'm honest to god not 'that guy' about this stuff.

Basically the guy is taking the cost it would take to move one toy at a time and assuming that it will cost that much to drive $12,000 in toys to the hospital (that is the new total). So basically he is getting great publicity for free if you believe that selling in bulk leads to the same margins as the normal flow of business. Look the guy is doing a good thing. I would not claim that he is not, but this guy is not some hero that is sacrificing his business to help this girl. He is covering his cost first and then giving the left overs second.

BTW - there is a huge difference in retail between cost and what this guy is talking about. The wording used is what really makes me suspicious because he is using a term that has a common meaning in an uncommon way. Most people would assume that cost would me wholesale cost. He is really talking about cost of goods sold.

You don't die of huntington's at age 7.

If you have it you'll die from it, sure. But not at age 7.

Most people die of huntington's between age 30 and 40.

That's the sole reason it keeps getting passed on, it doesn't present noticeable symptoms until after child bearing ages.

Juvenile form. Very rare (unless both parents have HD) but it happens, and it's horrible. My father died of HD. I've tested and don't have it. God HELP the person who does something like this in my town.

BZZZZZT!

Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) refers to the costs to get a physical product to a location for sale. This includes wholesale cost of the product, plus inbound shipping - basically the cost of buying merchandise and having it in place to sell.

Cost refers to the sum of all costs, which includes COGS, plus all fixed and variable costs. Fixed costs for retail are typically rent, insurance, and such. Variable costs include payroll, utilities, taxes, advertising, theft/shoplifting, loss due to damaged goods and other costs that fluctuate between fiscal periods (typically monthly).

On top of all of this is the usually forgotten opportunity (and very difficult to calculate) cost - which for retail refers to how long a product occupies a space in the showroom or warehouse before it is sold. Low inventory turns means that this cost goes up over time since the product sits, with funds already being allocated for COGS, plus additive variable costs, which eat away at profit margins.

A *well run* retail operation will typically make about 5%-8% margins at the end of all costs - which is often referred to as profit. A large part of this profit has to be put in to cash on hand to run the business through regular fluctuations in the market. After all things are tolled, 3.5% actual profit is about the minimum for a small, independent store like the one in the article to survive. Mass-market or big box stores typically operate with about 2% profit margins, because they can spread both risk and cost over a much larger base of operations and absorb stores operating at a loss with those operating at higher margins.

Ref: http://www.retailers.com/eduandevents/ask/askprofitmargin.html

So, giving away 10% of the donations means that the store is operating at a loss all tolled. Plus, ad in variable costs, staff time, etc being dedicated to the initiative for the family and actual out-of-pocket cost for the store will be about 12.5% for the merchandise.

That said there is certainly a large amount of social capital to be gained by helping the family, but I assure you in this case that was not the motivating factor for this store to contact the family and start this initiative. It is an unexpected, and welcome bonus, but wasn't why the offer was made.

You can try to apply some kind of typical profit margin from some cut and paste job you did on an internet site because you don't understand jackshiat about how a specialty business operates, but guy there is a big difference between the margin at Best Buy and the that of a specialty toy store. Specialty stores are usually higher margin because they have lower volume of sales. Seriously if you have any cost above a 10% margin on a specialty toy store you could not keep the doors open. I would also add that if he is ordering in mass that he will have none of the cost associated with holding inventory and selling it in a retail store. If this is not the case he could use it to clear old inventory that is not moving. Seriously, I bet you all give to televangelist because they are good people too.

My point is that if you give me $12,000 to order toys wholesale to my place of business and it cost me $70 for a limo and $40 for gas to drive 25 miles to the hospital and then back (did any of you catch this gem - that would mean if gas is 3 bucks his truck only gets 3 miles to the gallon) it would not cost me $1,200 to let a girl go through my store and then pack the rest on a truck.. If this guy is exaggerating about this cost what makes you people so sure that he is not exaggerating about the other cost associated with this project?

And you can pull things out your ass all you want, doesn't change the truth.

Yes, small independent specialty stores make a higher profit % per sell then big box stores, but not on an entire different order of magnitude. The man himself says he makes about 5-8% profit per sale depending on the product. He's giving 10% back to the family to keep.

He's also donated $100, spent a week already on this project, handling all the business aspect of it, setting up the different bonus perks (Limo, lunch) spending an entire day with her on her shopping sphere, the deliveries to the hospital, etc etc

No one is saying the man is Jesus Christ, but he's certainly a better man then your sad sack of shiat will ever be.

If this is not the case he could use it to clear old inventory that is not moving. Seriously, I bet you all give to televangelist because they are good people too.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I run a multi-million dollar specialty shop on the internet.

Doesn't change the fact this guy did a nice thing for the girl. Someone had to organize it and he did a damn fine job. All you did was complain about it. Guess which activity gave the girl what will probably be the best day of her life. You on the other hand contributed nothing. This guy isn't saying he's a hero, people are just applauding him for a job well done.

You're probably one of those people who don't consider cops, EMS, fire fighters, or soldiers heroes in any situation because they are compensated for their time.

Farking A every article about this story has a quote from this guy in it. I am also very curious how my pointing out how this guy may not be as altruistic as it seems at first glance means the I have contributed nothing. Ya and how did that dot com go for you BTW? I realized that you used past tense. Did it go belly up giving you a new insight into profit margins?

My God, it's coming true.

Bunnyhat: Yes, small independent specialty stores make a higher profit % per sell then big box stores, but not on an entire different order of magnitude.

Wow the guy spent $100 and ended up on the national news. I am also shocked that people that can turn on a computer are not capable of realizing you might have a small margin on one $12,000 transaction as opposed to 240 $50 transactions.

Reading comprehension for the lose. I specified that I "run." Not ran. The company has enjoyed nearly triple growth over the past year due to a successful product launch a year ago. Thanks for your concern!

DaSwankOne: You can try to apply some kind of typical profit margin from some cut and paste job you did on an internet site because you don't understand jackshiat about how a specialty business operates, but guy there is a big difference between the margin at Best Buy and the that of a specialty toy store. Dude, you are pure awesome. :-) Can I subscribe to your newsletter?

I am curious what your experience is in specialty retail. You seem to have a very different experience than I have had in the biz.

Unfortunately, I may have a few differing opinions on the reality of running a specialty toy store than you. See, it turns out that I actually own a specialty toy store. It's a really awesome store, and I know precisely what my margins are. We do pretty well, and have a great reputation in our community. We've been voted 'best toy store' in our major metropolitan area in a number of contests for many years, Nickelodeon Magazine declared us the 'Best Store for Little Kids' in 2008, and we work really hard on our community outreach. We also sell online.

You've probably heard of us - read about it today, even. Perhaps it's even linked to in the article in this very thread.

Oh, Hi! I own Tree Town Toys.

I'm pretty certain I know exactly what I am talking about when it comes to running a specialty toy store, and I know for sure that the numbers and margins I have presented are correct and accurate. I am known in the toy industry for being very open about our business and how we do our operations, and I present regularly at national conferences of toy store owners on many topics - particularly on utilizing the Internet in a specialty toy business. I've also recently finished a term on the board of directors of the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association.

The toys we are providing to Kathleen and to the CS Mott's Children's hospital are from our open stock, and are the toys they need based upon the children currently in the hospital. They are glad for every donation, and understand that our long-term work with them is important for the well-being of the kids. I have actually been in discussion with some of our suppliers to see if they can discount a very large purchase (which, this close to the holidays is not always something they'll do), and if I can get more toys for the same amount of money to pass on to the kids at CS Motts, I will most certainly do so.

I understand why you are cynical and doubting about my motives - too many people are as you describe. However, i am not one of them. Do I mind the social capital being generated? Of course not - from a purely business-oriented perspective, latching on to a 'hot' story makes sense. But know this - when I made my offer and challenge to reddit, I didn't think for a second about what this would do for my business, I thought 'what can I do as a local business, who specializes in making kids happy, do for this little girl who lives in my part of the world.'

I've done things like this for many other kids, but none of them have gotten this kind of publicity. So what, I am in this business for the kids, not for the publicity.

Know this as well - *everything* we are doing for Kathleen is with the blessing of her family. When we met on Tuesday, I specifically asked if the funds being raised were needed by them to handle medical bills or other expenses, and if so, we would simply give them the funds. Robert, the father, said they were ok financially, and that if this could help other sick kids too, that is what they wanted to have happen. This isn't about me or my store, it never has been. I have redirected the press back to the family more times than I can count over the past few days. When I met with the family on Tuesday, I didn't know that the cameras were going to be there, and that the media was still chasing this story as hard as they are. Then I learned it had gone viral and global - and that's when I realized that we have an opportunity to help more kids than just Kathleen.

So, your cynicism, which I am trying to understand, is unfounded in this case. Really. How do I know this? Because I am not a douche. It's just that simple.

Last year my warehouse and fulfillment business shipped toys to well over 50,000 kids who have a parent in prison. That was a project just above break-even. I make my money online and to regular customers, and I make enough to keep my employees paid and my kids fed.

Also, I've been a farker for about 8.5 years now.

*waves*

But that's OK, I'll still respect you in the morning.

Were you going to call bullshiat on me here, too?

This is actually a factual statement. As I indicated in my response to you, as this has ballooned, I am working on a discounted buy from our manufacturer.

However, what you are missing is that I can't just order $12,000 ($16,000 now, fwiw) of toys from one manufacturer and make every kid happy. I have to accomodate a broad range of ages, and both genders. This means that I am buying across multiple vendors, which means smaller buys, which also means more handling costs.

So, just as you point out that nine women can't make a baby in one month, likewise, 3 women can't make a baby in 3 months.

I will maximize the outcome for the kids based upon the final tallies. However, your statement that I have no significant costs with receiving and distributing these toys (which will probably go to hospitals all around the Detroit area at this point - which will mean lots of staff time and truck running time for my large box delivery truck - which gets 3-4 mpg, as you calculated above - it's a W4500 with an 18' box on it) means that I *may* end up with about 12% at the end. 10% goes to Kathleen's fund, and the other 2% gets dumped back in to more toys - as I said - for sick kids.

Unpucker, dude, it's OK. really.
