I don't see much difference between this article and this thread. Slightly different tack on the main idea, but all the principle points are the same. She's gonna be tried, here's what she's being tried on, here's where she says it's bunk. Not a whole lot of difference.

Hopefully her trial won't go into the election season cuz that could make things more difficult for Republicans.

She looks as though she's auditioning for that group shot of unamused civil rights crusaders. "The something something frowns upon your something something". I can't recall it off the top of my head. Anyone?

FTA:

"she simply helped an association of minority-owned banks get a meeting with the treasury secretary, a move consistent with a decadeslong track record of helping build and maintain black-owned businesses. Her husband's stock holdings in the bank represent less than 10 percent of their personal assets"

I am not sure what is "wrong" here. Her family assets are invested in her community. Lots of banks were hit hard by the home loan debacle. On the face of it, it seems like she did her job.

The Community Bank bought stock in two supposedly safe assets. If the regulatory agencies were doing there jobs, maybe Fanny and Freddy would not have been sold fraudulent loan packages. It is not like the bank make "risky" investments. Moody's said they were AAA.

I loved it when she sang "Right back where we started" in the 70's. She was great.
Most people also dont know this but as "Uhura" on Star Trek she was actually the first black receptionist in space, and that, as everyone knows, opened a lot of doors for other black female space receptionists

Outside of her profiting directly from her (illegal) influence as a congresswoman, and your LULZY apologetics, nothing. Nothing at all. I think it's time you mention Bush and/or Palin.

Irregardless: Maxine Waters is a Democrat's Democrat and will easily retain her position and power.

Her position is not even in question. Nobody -- except for a few secessionists during the Civil War -- has ever been expelled from the House except upon either being found guilty or pleading guilty to criminal charges, which aren't involved here.

As to her power -- she really doesn't have any good committee assignments to take away. She likely faces reprimand, censure, or a fine.

lol, that is putting it too kindly. it's almost painful to watch her try to make some point or argument. it's like watching somebody shiat their drawers. I cannot believe that any large population would knowingly and willingly allow her to represent them. Democracy at its worst.

She is a member of congress and with that responsibility comes a little bit of power. She will also very likely be re-elected to another term.

Depends on primary challengers. A good fraction of the time the Republicans don't even run a candidate in her district, so she'd be safe in the general, but anything can happen in a primary.

"I can basically say we didn't do anything wrong," Gupton said Friday evening. "It was simply just trying to make a teachable moment," Said the race-baiting provocateur.

"Totally inappropriate ... and it's reflective of a very small group of people that won't engage in constructive conversations but want to keep this rhetoric going," said an official regarding the injured officer.

Where?

I mean, I freely admit I've let this particular episode pass me by, but the particular stuff you quoted doesn't have anything racial except what you stuffed in it. Oh wait, you're NYRockWhileofthomas, you're just threadshiatting again.

Actually, just running with what was in the article, she has a chance of getting away with it. One instance of obvious corruption compared to Ted "tubes" Stevens 7+ and she's apparently a race-card player? I suspect she can finagle a "reasonable doubt" out of an equally politicized (and corrupt) hearing.

Alternatively, I also find myself thinking that if 2 entrenched long-running congresscritters can get pinched, maybe there will be more corruption-cleaning before all this is done, if only to appear "not racist."

Hey, I can dream, can't I?

I really wish that Colbert had let her run with the Indian thing; especially if he got her to clarify "dot or feather?"

Anyway, as far as this story, I treat it about the same as the Chris Dodd stuff a couple years ago where he openly stated his position as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee when getting loans from Countrywide to get good deals, and then when the system was melting down was quick to try to protect Countrywide in particular from crashing. He was doing what anyone would probably try in his situation, attempting to use what influence he had to protect his own interests with the mental justification that it would help others as well, but at the same time we shouldn't just accept this behavior and abuse of power should be identified and called out. In fact, the most offensive part of the Dodd affair was that he tried to plead ignorance that the CEO putting him on the VIP program would suggest that he was getting any preferential treatment.

In defense of Waters, it sounds like she at least did all her stuff out in the open; these meetings weren't held in secret, and she disclosed her husband's relationship to these entities from the beginning. That said, she still needs to be criticized for using the power of her office in a way that would benefit her personally, and I would like to see the committee do just that.

TheBigJerk Where?

Not being racist so that republicansFark Independents have no ammo for their claims of racism is racist.

Here's a handy guide for defining "racism" in the sense republicans use the word: if it happened, and it didn't directly help the right in some way, it is somehow racist and you should feel bad.

Alternatively, you could make note of the fact that people like NYZooMan have about as much integrity as a boat made out of saltines and just ignore them.

You do understand how our government works don't you? The people of the district she represents elect her, not all Democrats.

If you have a problem with her being in Congress, take it up with her constituents.

I truly don't believe she should lose her position based on these ethics charges. She should lose her job, because she thinks Germany bombed East Vietnam and now there are two Vietnams coexisting side by side in peace.

Regarding the behavior of Ms. Waters' antagonists, if you call it a riot it sounds like it was just a bunch of crazy people who went out and did bad things for no reason. I maintain it was somewhat understandable, if not acceptable. So I call it a rebellion.
