Wow, did Focus on the Family write that?

Eh. I actually understand the impetus for this question, and it's a direct response to the crazy Senators that are obsessed with this particular idea. I don't like it, but I'm not that horrified.

Do they not think that they're not already showering with some guys they didn't ask, and who haven't told?

2010-07-09 10:05:21 PM
Once it is acceptable for a gay man to view me in the shower with me knowing that he might be curious about my penis, it will then be acceptable for me to leer at naked woman and be curious about how small their cavity might be.

I like where this is going. Giggity.

As long as nobody's sporting wood, it should be easy to overlook this issue.

FTFA: Some gay rights groups are concerned that the gay and lesbian service members could inadvertently out themselves by filling it out.

Yup. f). Yay! I have a new farkbuddy!

Did they factor out the gays' answers from that poll?

I'm a firm believer in the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. It keeps gays safe in the military. While I don't approve of their choice of lifestyle, I also still recognize them as serving their country, and that holds more weight for me. I can at least justify this to myself, to my conscience, by saying remembering that the U.S. military is representing one of the best countries in the world, so it shouldn't matter if someone is gay or not, if they want to defend their country -- that's still an honor. I think maybe if they come out and announce that they are gay though, that it will detract from how they're perceived as U.S. soldiers. Because people start to worry about things like, what if the soldier gets distracted on the battlefield, you know, by the other men, and it becomes a danger, not only to himself, but to people who are relying on him?

Once women were allowed, this argument became invalid. Just change "gay soldier" to "woman" and it's the same freaking thing.

/may have taken bait.

DADT doesn't keep gays in the military safe. Not at all.

I would say that anyone that thinks that is an idiot, but idiot isn't a strong enough term.

2010-07-10 12:04:27 AM
They're troops. Aren't they supposed to do what they're told?

Tell them to treat their gay fellow soldiers as equals and if they don't, there will be discipline. Same as you'd probably do if there were actively racist people in the military.

It won't be an issue unless you let it become one.

Don't worry. Lesbian soldiers are fine with everyone.

It's too bad we will never know how may gay soldiers saved the lives of straight soldiers in combat.

And vice versa.

Gay people don't start wars.

Major Tate: Sir, we're not prejudiced toward homosexuals.
Admiral Fitzwallace: You just don't want to see them serving in the Armed Forces?
Major Tate: No sir, I don't.
Admiral Fitzwallace: 'Cause they impose a threat to unit discipline and cohesion.
Major Tate: Yes, sir.
Admiral Fitzwallace: That's what I think, too. I also think the military wasn't designed to be an instrument of social change.
Major Tate: Yes, sir.
Admiral Fitzwallace: The problem with that is that what they were saying to me 50 years ago. Blacks shouldn't serve with whites. It would disrupt the unit. You know what? It did disrupt the unit. The unit got over it. The unit changed. I'm an admiral in the U.S. Navy and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff... Beat that with a stick.

When they integrated the armed forces, there were some white soldiers who were glad to have colored soldiers serving alongside them, some soldiers who didn't want to have n*ggers serving with them, and some who didn't care one way or another. There were a few beatings, a few fraggings, some men who couldn't handle the idea of having to serve with "inferiors" left early...but guess what?

After a few battles and some time with each other, most soldiers found that as long as the guy next to him could shoot straight and carried his weight on march, it didn't really matter what color he was. And once the black guys proved they could be good leaders, then that was pretty much that.

So probably the same thing will happen when gays and lesbians can serve openly. Some people will be glad, some people will hate it, and most won't give a rat's ass, as long as the guy next to him can shoot straight and pull his weight on duty. I suspect that most of the military guys here on Fark who've been in combat wouldn't care if one of their squad mates turned out to be gay as long as he kept shooting during a firefight.

2010-07-10 12:54:48 AM
The vast majority of gheys aren't the flamboyant ones, and get mistaken for straight.

So the result impression is that all gays are flamboyant.

News flash: There are regular looking gheys all around you, all the time.

Gays in the military aren't the problem.
Dumb Homophobic Good ol' Boys are the problem.
Alas; Dumb Homophobic Good ol' Boys make the best cannon fodder, and they sign up in droves, so it makes more sense to military brass to try to exclude things that may upset the fragile psyches of the Dumb Homophobic Good ol' Boys.

You know, I go to the gym (in 26 minutes) fairly regularly. I'm in Las Vegas. I have no doubt whatsoever that there have been gay men in the locker room and showers at the same time as I have.

Somehow I manage not to curl up in the corner of the shower while rocking back and forth because "teh gays" may have seen me naked.

I just make sure to polish my penis beforehand so it's presentable.

...

Wait.

DADT exposes our gay and lesbian troops to the potential for blackmail, and because of this undermines national security. Why do Republicans oppose a policy shift that would improve national security?
