RTFA, Subby.

Submittard really is a 'tard. Imagine that.

If I had a hammer, I'd hammer subby's skull in hoping I could prevent him from breeding from the shallow end of the gene pool.

That didn't rhyme at all.

oh, you poor, sad tardmitter. one day, you'll learn to read, and you'll be less likely to open yourself up to such delicious mockery.

FTFA:

Webb says the trend is explained by the islands' composition. Unlike the sandbars of the eastern US coast, low-lying Pacific islands are made of coral debris. This is eroded from the reefs that typically circle the islands and pushed up onto the islands by winds, waves and currents. Because the corals are alive, they provide a continuous supply of material. "Atolls are composed of once-living material," says Webb, "so you have a continual growth." Causeways and other structures linking islands can boost growth by trapping sediment that would otherwise get lost to the ocean.

All this means the islands respond to changing weather and climate.

notice, also, epicfailmitter, that weather and climate are mentioned as two different things. that means that if you see a massive snowstorm in march outside the window of your tarpaper appalachian shack, it doesn't necessarily mean that the world's climate is trending colder.

They do match the theory, submitter (which is not "Al Gore's theory"): sea level is rising there.

the best part is how submittard was so pleased with himself. i'll bet he wet his overalls with glee when he had his mom read him the headline.

Al Gore is a fat retard.

/Came here to say that.

That has to be the least-funny headline of the year. SCIENCE, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

2010-06-05 9:09:27 AM
During that time, local sea levels have risen by 120 millimetres, or 2 millimetres per year on average.

Assuming that's accurate, is it really that amazing that islands aren't submerged after a whole extra 10 cm of water was added? If they were low enough to sea level to be sunk by 10 cm, they would be submerged every high tide.

TFA says sea levels are rising and the islands that are growing are doing so becuase they are comprised of coral and there's been an abundance of dead coral washing ashore.

/That means it fits AGW, subby, no hammer needed.

Barakku: Assuming that's accurate, is it really that amazing that islands aren't submerged after a whole extra 10 cm of water was added? If they were low enough to sea level to be sunk by 10 cm, they would be submerged every high tide.

TFA points out that one island (Tuvalu) has a maximum height of 4 meters or so. The expectation wasn't that the islands would be underwater today with the 12cm rise. The expectation was they would be shrinking, and as the rise continued to accelerate, they'd shrink faster until they were submerged.

It was a common sense prediction, that like many common sense predictions turned out to be incorrect when all factors were accounted for (in this case, island growth due to new material).

FTFA: "Despite this, Kench and Webb found that just four islands have diminished in size since the 1950s. The area of the remaining 23 has either stayed the same or grown (Global and Planetary Change, DOI: 10.1016/j.gloplacha.2010.05.003)."

What's the use of this article if it doesn't tell us the four islands that we should cry about?

this is true. i mistakenly took intro to geology for majors (thinking it was rocks for jocks - the fact that the class had only 20 people in it and was team-tought by two full profs clued me in straight away). we learned about this process, along with basic plate tectonics.

What does it even mean that the 'Earth will be fine'? I've never why anyone would use this as an argument. Regardless of anything that man does, the earth will exist for several billion more years. The concern is not for the planet, it's for the people on the planet.

There needs to be some branch of Godwin's Law that says as an internet conversation about global climate change goes on, the probability of Al Gore being used to criticize science reaches one.

Here's a record of the sea level in Sydney, Australia. Granted that it's anecdotal, but it is nearby and a long record.
tidesandcurrents.noaa.govView Full Size
(new window)
The mean sea level trend is 0.59 millimeters/year with a 95% confidence
interval of +/- 0.11 mm/yr based on monthly mean sea level data from
1886 to 2003 which is equivalent to a change of 0.19 feet in 100 years.
[Data for 1886-1914 are monthly mean tide level plus a 1.7 mm correction]

Could be that all those islands go underwater next week. But trendwise, the islands might have more to fear from the compaction of the island's coral base than the rising sea level.

2010-06-05 12:39:32 PM
no scientist with even a rudimentary knowledge of the science and physics of barrier islands would have ever postulated that a minor rise in sea levels would adversely affect their existence. Was this some sort of boondoggle study to suck up public funds? I need to get in on this whole grant writing scam. there is a sucker born every minute and most of them end up in the government.

///the only way to kill a barrier island is to cut off its source of sand
