419 scams and anything that result from them should be perfectly legal. Thin the herd.

That wouldn't thin anything. It would lead to a rise of welfare cases and money leaving the United States.

They should've waited until she collected her million dollars, then kidnapped her. How would a ransom be paid if she doesn't have the money yet?

I agree. If you're stupid enough to get taken, you should have no recourse.

That's the same way I feel about poor people. You're poor because you're stupid or lazy, and you deserve it.

Don't you agree?

I honestly don't see the crime here.

No they are actual crime fighting hawks. It is quite the sight seeing 5 or 6 police hawks fly a suspect to jail in their talons.

The question remains--how do these people accumulate money in the first place? The mind boggles.

I don't see the woman's age listed.

From other people's hard work. Marriage or inheritance?

As far as I can tell, they are either a rugby team or a special police unit.

The allure of riches is apparently enough to part even the educated with their money. From the first time I received an email before it was dubbed "419 scam", my first question was "why me?"

Nobody, and I mean nobody, has that kind of dumb luck to be contacted out of the blue to move a princely sum of money out of a 3rd world country.

Once the scammers run out of prey, they will find a new scam and people will fall for it.

/once tried to convince an old man who had once been a well-respected college professor not to wire money to these idiots showing him plenty of evidence to support that it was a scam.
//last I heard he had lost close to 160k and still believes "his ship will come in one day" from these people.

The usual ways -- holding hot coffee between their legs, confusing the accelerator pedal for the break, getting shot by the homeowner whose house they are robbing, stuff like that.

2010-05-31 1:52:45 PM
Ok, I want to know if this is some old granny who I should feel bad for because she aged and losing her marbles, or is this some hot young babe who needs a beating so hard she can't sit for a month because she has no common sense at all (You know, Britney or Jessica). It doesnt say she had to steal the 60K so I am imagining an older but well off bird...

I laugh any time I receive an email from someone contacting me about a "large" sum of money that needs to be transferred to me. If this were legitimate, you would contact me through a bit more secure means than email.

The newest one is that I've been found to be the heir of an account in the UK and that I need to call an international number to talk to the account representative to have the funds transferred.

Woman returns to america, gets on tv talk shows to show the dangers of the internet, gets a book deal and made for tv movie. ends up richer than all of us

They should have paid the random with a forged cashier's check written for a little more than the random amount, and requested the excess balance back in cash.

I agree about the stupidity and laziness. Came from a trailer park in KY where my mother was happy to find out that the more kids she has, the more welfare she gets (still have not met two of my younger siblings). I live in Orlando, have a cool job, a car, and have never claimed welfare.
But there are some people who are very smart who are stuck with stupid lazy parents, and as a result these potentially brilliant minds are wasted because of bad parenting or upbringing.

As far as this woman, she is an ID10T.

Great reporting there. Doesn't even list the woman's e-mail address so that I can hit her up for some cash. Maybe take the "long lost relative" angle. Hell, if she had 60K to send to these bozos, she's got to have 5K to send to her cousin Bob who's hit a rough patch.

I refuse to read the article, but I assume she got a plane ticket to South Africa, and raised the mark to 420

I expect the next scam to be Gulf of Mexico seawater oil futures.

You can get in on the ground floor of the millions of gallons of oil just waiting to be recovered along the Gulf Coast. Send $39.95 to Seawater Collective Assets Management (S.C.A.M.), Attention : Rufus T. Firefly, Freedonia.

To be fair, it's possible to be poor even if you are not lazy or stupid. It's not possible to fall for a 419 scam without being retarded.

Agreed. Scams are still illegal for excellent reasons. Protection of Seniors *is* everyones responsibility. Even an ITG, Juggalo or Oprah. Though clearly Juggalos do more for seniors than Oprah.

Interestingly, science has found that despite the saying, you can't actually beat common sense into people, fun as it might be to try. If intervention must be made, it's probably a better idea to put them into a conservatorship.

Since we're changing the law anyway, let's get rid of welfare. Let 'em starve.

and money leaving the United States.

Who says the 419ers need to be out-of-country? It it was legal, I'd get me some of that action. It'd be the key to unlimited riches.
