Actually, when you have a 16 year old who decides to stand up to parental authority by getting physical with the parent, calling the police may actually be the sanest way to deal with the situation. If the dad had gotten violent or forceful with her, she would have played the victim and dad would have gone off to jail.

If she got physical with him, she was ready to be booted out anyway. The day your kid physically attacks you because you're laying down the law to them is the day that the kid needs to be shown the door.

The key is to keep a spare cellphone around for such emergencies.

You might want to pull the SIM card out to make the backup phone work on the same plan, but if you're doing that, you might as well hand over the spare phone anyways.

So I think the key is to clone the cellphone SIM card regularly. Well, keeping it in sync with any user data stored on the card is difficult. But, you could indeed hand over a working phone, turn it off, and start up with a backup phone off the same account.

Just don't get caught.

Not necessarily true. My parents were violent and forceful with me. My friends called the police. I refused to say anything happened, these people were in complete control of my life and would be for the next two years. Said incident was when my mom grabbed me by the throat, slammed my head into the kitchen cabinets while screaming she loved me. Why wouldn't I just understand that already?

I dunno, maybe because I don't think love is supposed to hurt that much.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to spank your sixteen year-old daughter. Spanking someone else's sixteen year-old daughter on the other hand, that's just naughty.

You don't think she'd catch on? That would be an awful lot of coincidences. You'd just make her paranoid and scared, not teach her anything.

WTF ever happened to having a relationship with and just talking to your child? Explaining things using WORDS. Why does it always have to be a game - games get really boring. Especially when it's always the same one.

Yea, I have experience with this. Got a little forceful with my 16 year old once when I told her she was grounded. She refused. Eventually, I had to stand firm and use force to put her in her room. She screamed, kicked (and the kicking was towards the groin-al area). Things escalated - but no broken bones. Maybe a bruise or 2 on both our parts. Next day she told teacher at school (for attention whore and oh the whole world is against me wooh is me purposes). School immediately contacts police / children services.

Fortunately, did not involve me going to jail. Not easy being a parent these days. I have a 14 year old daughter who thinks I am the best dad in the world. I give her another 2 years for her to change her mind.

Spoiled little brat. Too bad they can't be thrown out on the street before 18. She can pay her own phone bill... along with rent, groceries, utilities, car payment, etc. If it were my daughter, I would've smashed the phone into tiny bits with a hammer and made her watch. Then handed it back to her saying "Okay, you can have your phone back now."

When I was about 14 (41 now), I called my mom a name and slammed my bedroom door. She kicked the door so hard the slide/latch from the door handle flew across the room and broke a window. Never ask your pissed off mom who gets blamed for that!

A couple of years later, I did about the same thing with my dad. He had replaced the door knob with, apparently, a better one. When he kicked it, the latch held. His foot came completely thru the door. I got to pay for that one too. It was not fixed until after I moved out a few years later.

I was really a pretty good kid, no major problems except I had a smart mouth. It works great with my parents now as we all have the same humor and we can separate ourselves now.

I can't imagine the police being called for anything. My guess is this guys wife or step-mom/GF called because things were getting out of hand. She probably did them both a favor.

2010-05-21 5:38:11 AM
Really, police were called for this?

2010-05-21 7:02:49 AM
Parent seems to be doing things the hard way.

Step one: Call Verizon/Sprint/Whomever; inform them to suspend the use of the phone carried by the kid. It will still be useable for calling 911, but nothing else. This, of course, only works if you are paying the bill; Doing so allows you to shut if off and to monitor calling info.

Step 2: Remove/put lock on child's power cord for their computer. Any use for schoolwork will occur with you sitting at their shoulder.

Step 3: Remove the door to their room at home.

Step 4: Take a week or so off work, contact school to arange it, and attend school with your child for a that week or so, driving them to school, sitting with them in class, sitting with them at lunch and driving them home.

Step 5: Expect a rapid attitude correction.

/Of course, if you are willing to have this kind of involvement in your child's life, you probably won't need to go to this level

bamf75: what do you expect? It's not like this place is a meeting of the Algonquin Roundtable or anything.

I dunno, actually. The Round Table was pretty much just a venue for snarky New York intellectual types to get together and produce clever quotations. Even Dorothy Parker, in her later years, said that the whole thing was masterbatory bullshiat. Just a bunch of self-satisfied a-holes playing word games with each other and not producing anything of real substance.

And, of course, there's my favorite line from the whole thing, coined by Alexander Wollcot: "All the things I like to do are either immoral, illegal or fattening."

Pretty much this.

Though if you've gotten to the point where your 16 year old disrespects you to that point... you've failed as a parent. No need to make that public though.

No problem. Still, handy thought but won't work if overused. Then again teaching is more of the kind of thing where you try various tactics, not just one.

Most sixteen year olds are fully grown. So you're talking about a full grown woman. For those of you who don't have kids, you just need to stop. It is not so easy to just "lay down the law" to kids and have them magically cower beneath you. It may have seemed that way when your parents were doing it, and I'm sure you have some anecdotal evidence to the contrary, but being a parent day in and day out is complicated. Children have their own minds and don't always respond to one kind of discipline. I have three children and they all respond differently to different kinds of discipline, even though they've been raised in the same house and are all with in a year of each other age wise. (Yes, I practically have triplets, no they aren't adopted.)

So, before you judge this father with all of your armchair child psych degree's, remember that most parents are doing the very best they can. That father was probably trying very hard not to physically harm his daughter, in fact, he might have called the police because he was scared she was a danger to herself, and not just to him. There are no instructions for raising humans. Some of us, in fact, a great many of us, (aside from the odd ones you read about under the "FAIL" tag) are actually trying to do a good job and not raise "crazy snowflakes", but normal, reasonable members of society.

What is the difference? Specifically, what is the difference you can use to defend yourself when your child claims it was a beating and you claim it was just a spanking? Dad did the right thing here.

Way to go, Dad.
All of you that think this guy was somehow 'stepping on the kids rights' or something should be ashamed. I have NO doubt that he tried everything he could, and I highly doubt this was the first incident. Sometimes things are just the last straw.
Seriously, do you think he just called the police the first time she did something like this? C'mon!
I am a parent of five, and on my fourth teenager. They can be selfish and self-centered, and the reason our society is in trouble today is because no one explained to them (using whatever means) that this was unacceptable. I love my kids, and understanding that they are selfish and self-centered helps me to deal with them. Yes, it may look mean and even cruel sometimes, but I do it in order to instruct. These kids are going to be in society on thier own soon, and have relatively little skills with which to interact with others and resolve conflicts.
This kid did something wrong. The dad tried to punish her, she rebelled. It escalated because of HER selfishness.
