For those who don't get Canadian media, Geddy Lee pretty much dissed the Rock Hall of Fame saying that this Canadian HoF was more important to him, so I think this one needs the "obvious" tag instead.

Well, they were good enough to get America's most popular talk radio figure named for them.

They should have waited to do it until 2/1/12.

The US HoF has a serious problem with respecting prog rock.

Rush. It's hard to believe it's been over thirty years since Geddy Lee first slipped his balls into a vice and started wallowing like a shrieking capon being led to slaughter.

To think that that long ago, something inside of Neil Peart led him to purchase the entire contents of Dave's Drum and Gong Emporium and establish an Alpine heap of crap to bang on, a veritable Roman orgy of percussive gear. To this day it takes 25,000 roadies and five tour semis to carry his snares alone, proppling up half of the nation's service economy.

Throw in the twee souless noodlings of Alex Lifeson and you have the recipe for a what is without question the perfect poutine of gravy-covered majesty that is Canadian cheese-rock.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

I love it when some blowhard troll tries to sound smart, and drops words into his diatribe that make no sense.

Cretin troll is a cretin.

Wallowing has a number of meanings, at least a couple of which work there. Also, I was trying to ape the over-the top erudition used in lifetime award and Hall of Fame speeches, it was meant to be a joke. I'm sorry if I offended your son Mama Lee.

Are we going to have to hug this one out?

I remember buying 2112 on 8 track and blasting it until I wore it out. Saw them live for the first time on the Moving Pictures tour. Easily one of the top 5 best concerts I've been too.

They kinda lost me after Presto as far as studio albums go, but I've seen them twice since that album came out and they still kicked ass live.

RUSH is one of those groups that you either love their music or you hate it.

I made my wife attend one of their concerts with me a few years back. She fell asleep during the 2112 songs.

Depends if one considers Zappa to be prog; I guess a case for that could be made.

Crimson may have a shot, as they were a big influence on Cobain et al. I thought The Moody Blues were in, but I was mistaken. Tull has a very outside chance, assuming Wenner and Marsh both spontaneously combust and the new ringleaders decide prog wasn't so bad after all. Procul Harum should already be in, but aren't.

Yes has no chance. The critics have always loathed them (well, at least since after TaaW), and that'll be that. What's sad is that Chris Squire has gone on record as wanting Yes to be inducted before they all die.

Congrats to Rush on entering a highly prestigious HOF with many other famous Canadian musical names. The iconic CBC "Hockey Song" is also going to be inducted tomorrow night as well (which Neil Peart did a new rendition of recently).

The Canadian press appears to be abuzz with news about possible touring dates this year and a new album (retaining Snakes & Arrows producer Nick Raskulinecz) and tour next year.

Interview with Alex Lifeson about being inducted & future plans

Neil Peart on being inducted and new album news

There is also an hour-long CBC video interview with Geddy and Alex talking about being inducted and the 5 songs that are going in here.

Finally, I for one would LOVE to see Vapor Trails remastered. The 2 remastered tracks that appeared on Retrospective 3 (One Little Victory & Earthshine) sound MUCH better than the over-produced originals. They have been hinting about doing this for years now.... can you please do it guys?

Yeah I can see the rock and roll HoF, but songwriting? Seriously?

I know many, many Rush fans, and the number of them who listen for the songwriting is roughly zero.

GypsyJoker: Depends if one considers Zappa to be prog; I guess a case for that could be made.

I'd call him more avant-garde than prog, but fair point.

Yes deserves it, hands down, in my eye.

And I guess an argument could be made for some of Metallica's older stuff to be prog-ish (Master of Puppets and And Justice For All both have their proggy moments).
But still, the R&RHOF is seriously lacking in prog.

Alex Lifeson said in a Globe and Mail interview that he couldn't care less about the R&R HoF and that he believes there are many bands before Rush that should get in first. He said it's all a bunch of polotics and he's actually prefer Rush to never be inducted.

The sad thing is that Vapor Trails was horribly mastered. Geddy and Alex admit this. They have said that there's not much that can be fixed on the album. They were incredibly upset over that album, but they moved on and released Snakes and Arrows which was one of their best albums ever.

Oh, I probably wouldn't call him prog either. I've seen him lumped in with the prog scene a fair number of times in the literature, though, and he certainly has some characteristics of prog in his music--same with Pink Floyd, who probably aren't really prog either. It's such a nebulous term.

Yes has no chance. The critics have always loathed them (well, at least since after TaaW), and that'll be that. What's sad is that Chris Squire has gone on record as wanting Yes to be inducted before they all die.

Absolutely agreed--they're probably the closest thing to a "prototypical" prog band. But the forces behind the HoF have pretty much said that prog won't be a part of the Hall; they may have violated this by inducting Genesis, but time will tell if that's a bone they threw to appease the prog crowd, an acknowledgment of Genesis' commercial success, a testament to Peter Gabriel, or whatever. (Black Sabbath got in, too, and Wenner and Marsh had said they'd never let metal into the Hall... so who knows?)
