If only they'd do this in America.
2003-04-27 07:31:30 PM
If you make it illegal for children to buy fast food from legitimate vendors, then children will just buy illegal black market cheeseburgers. Those have even more fat content.
2003-04-27 07:41:55 PM
Mmmm Hamburgers. I will give up my beef products when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers!
2003-04-27 08:16:54 PM
I like hamburgers.
That is all.
2003-04-27 08:23:47 PM
Some one should tell those lawmakers that you never come between a fat man and his food. Not to mention the fact that they would be relying on the cashier at McDonalds to enforce this law. Though this would be better than being 21 around a bunch of teens with money.

Outlaw something (a luxury) and it doesn't get much more rare, it just puts people in prison and raises the possibility of crime rings surrounding it.

I wonder what this would do to the school lunch program in the US...

Burgers shouldn't be outlawed for children. However, Fatburger should be forced to open a New Jersey franchise.

Experts say that one in seven primary school children is obese.

Schools should cut down on the junk they sell at lunch, and get rid of the soda machines. But I don't think hamburgers should be illegal to sell to kids.

That's just dumb.
2003-04-28 07:41:56 AM
"They sell lollies at school and some people buy about $7 worth," Dillon said.

Maybe I should invest in lollipop futures.

Seriously, if you are worried about having a fat child, invest in a treadmill or prophylactics.
2003-04-28 07:42:20 AM
They say that you are what you eat. The penalty for a minor eating a burger should be that that child is then turned into a burger themselves.

/first class ticket please. non smoking if possible.

"Experts say that one in seven primary school children is obese."
A lot less than I thought.

See? You start trying to regulate every little thing that could possibly be harmful, with no regard for personal responsibility, and you wind up banning hamburgers. What kind of nanny world are we living in?

That is why we must legalize child porn.

If you need me, I'll be in jail.

i guess the US gives up the throne of police state to New Zealand

Let's ban everything which has ever been a problem for anyone.

Then just pass the Kool-Aid (unsweetened, of course) at Jonestown.

No one need ever feel any pain again.

(This was a bitter start to my morning...)

from the article, "Many parents had jobs"
won't hear that in New Mexico
2003-04-28 08:10:10 AM
This is stupid: There are much better ways to deal with fat children without resorting to fast food legislation.

The best is to bully them mercilessly until they become anorexic or kill themselves.

Chasing them around, weilding a whip or cat o' nine tails, until they're skinny, also works...

Surgical or drug options can be quite effective: A diet of uncut amphetamine sulphate, coupled with the revolutionary 'Texas chainsaw massacre' liposuction technique, for example.

Or originally enough, getting them on a proper diet and not giving them all the sweets they want, washed down with bottles of coke.
2003-04-28 08:13:04 AM
They should all take up smoking. That helps to keep your weight down.

I do think this is one of the nice things about NZ compared to the UK or the US, that they aren't afraid to consider trying out potentially unpopular crazy shiat like this.

Personally though, I disagree with this one. You can't legislate for people's weaknesses. They make a choice, knowing the consequences, every time they go into one of these places. However I think within a school, where there is a captive market, they should provide decent healthy options. It's all about choice really.

Too Bad Heston got the Mad Cow from those burgers he ate. Else he could be defending our right of unfettered access to burgers...
2003-04-28 08:27:02 AM
That makes perfect sense. It being illegal to sell it to them will stop them from eating them. That argument works so well in SC with cigarettes. (The state that made it illegal for minors to buy cigarettes and illegal to sell cigarettes to minors. One small problem, though. it's not illegal for minors to have cigarettes so no one can stop underage people from smoking because it's not illegal.)

No! No! No! No! No!

What we need to do is make psychiatric counseling mandatory for children. Beginning with one-on-one sessions in nursery school, group therapy would be added at the kindergarten level. By the first grade, the little buffalos would be strong enough to have mom, dad, sissy, and bubba attend weekly confrontations with a licensed facilitator. Of course, school days would have to be extended by three hours. And the American workweek would need to be increased to 45 hours (no overtime!) to support the taxes required to make it a program accessible to all.
But, thank God, it would finally put an end to this madness.

No! More! FATTIES!
I have a dream...

Aussie farkers -- what are "hot chips"?
2003-04-28 08:43:57 AM
GoodyearPimp:- Chips. Sticks of fried potato, as in Fish and Chips. You have a skinny reconstituted version called French Fries.

Give me hamburgers or give me death!

Ah, this law is dumb. This will not prevent childhood obesity. Nothing will except parents noticing their children are fat-butts and making them go play outside as opposed to sitting on the couch watching TV and scarfing snacks.
2003-04-28 08:47:52 AM
This fat kid wit man tits threatened to "drop me" today for grabing his man tits. I don't think fat people shuld be able to cry like little bitces if you touch their tits without trying to hurt them; they shouldn't have eaten all the farking doughnuts. If they didn't want people grabbing at their massive tits, and I don't buy that "It's glandular" bull shiat either, I got tits, but I also watched that farking doughnut go in my goddamn mouth.

It's so obvious... Damn you, Ronald!
2003-04-28 08:51:03 AM
I like the idea of a speakeasy selling illicit burgers to kids. In my book, if a front door hasn't got a sliding eyeslot, it's not worth going in.
2003-04-28 08:53:08 AM
If preventing obsity is the goal, why not just sieze the fat kids and put them in goverment custody? Why not just round up everyone that doesnt meet some bureaucrats vision of health and send us all off to a government issue fat farm to be 're-educated'? Wouldnt that be achieving the same goal? Why does the government, (any government it seems) always want more and more control over the lives of the people it is supposed to serve? And someone somewhere thinks my proposal above is reasonable....Thats the real danger.
Now.... off to get caffiene while thats still legal...
2003-04-28 08:54:45 AM
I would have starved as a kid.
2003-04-28 08:56:17 AM
Plus, if the kid is buying the burger, chances are he rode his bike or walked there. It 's the ones sitting home in front of the TV who shouldn't be allowed to have burgers.
2003-04-28 08:57:04 AM

Wouldn't width restrictors at McDonald's be a simpler solution? Basically, the fat kids wouldn't be able to squeeze through the front door till they'd slimmed down a bit.
2003-04-28 09:04:12 AM
Parents should raise their kids, asking the government to perfom loco parentis duties is a recipe for disaster.
2003-04-28 09:12:25 AM
Funny how the picture is of a fat girl eating.
2003-04-28 09:13:46 AM
Children should be removed from their parents at birth, and brought up by machines in huge government nurseries. Any one showing defects can be reduced to a nutritious slurry as a treat for the others.
2003-04-28 09:19:15 AM
The actual food served at my old high school was about as bad, if not worse, than the snacks they allowed you to buy in the cafeteria. It was quite nasty. Of course, I do remember them trying to enforce some policy where they would not allow outside fast food. My friend would get back from autos with a bag of Burger Squirts for lunch, probably out of some act of defiance or something. The best part of it was that he'd finish it off with a school lunch. Needless to say he began to get quite large. :)
2003-04-28 09:21:31 AM
I read you post as..

If preventing obsity is the goal, why not just sieze the fat kids and put them in goverment custard?

mmmm, custard.

2003-04-28 09:25:42 AM
"If they banned fast-food adverts when children's programmes were on, they might as well ban all television because other people also watched those shows, she said."

What the? They've already banned alcohol commercials before 8.30pm, honey. This is the same idea. So we should've already banned tv? Gah.
2003-04-28 09:28:02 AM
Yes, the government is your parent. You have no personal responsibility. Big Brother will take care of you and tell you what is good and bad for you. Anything not good will be illegal. Move along #519532
