Atrium Dome of the West Baden Springs Hotel. Built in 1901, this was the world's largest free spanning dome until a sports dome took its place in the 1960s. This was shot at 12mm on a 30D, and I couldn't get the entire atrium in. Even if I'd had the 10mm at the time, it wasn't enough.

Built over the American River outside of Auburn, CA for a dam that was never built, it's the third-highest bridge in the US, and the tallest in CA at 730ft above the riverbed.
You have to pop it larger to actually see the wee little cars going across.

Still considered the 'Gateway to Sacramento', the central-lift drawbridge has lost little of it's grandeur.
It would afford a nicely framed view of the State Capitol building if one could stand in the middle of the roadbed...

NO skyline from the highway, taken from a moving bus.

By now you should be able to guess where I spent my most recent vacation.

Maisenbacher House
Springfield, IL
September 2009

This is one of the last examples of Italianate architecture in Springfield, saved from demolition at a pretty steep cost and moved several blocks east and north of its original location. Here the new foundation has just recently been completed, and the gaps between that and the exterior walls finally filled in. Since this photo was taken they've done a bit more cleanup and started restoring the porch and front entrance.

Orphaned deck
Springfield IL
May 2009

This is in an empty lot just down the back alley from my house. I live on a half-abandoned block in a crumbling neighborhood. I'd do more exploring if I could, because it's an older section of town with a lot of turn-of-the-century houses - mine included - but it's not really abandoned enough to do so safely. Eheh.

But look at all that rhubarb!

I love that one. The building looks so clean, and the color makes an awesome contrast with the sky.

The reflection in the large window above the door, right next to the Manitoba coat-of-arms, is the golden boy. The Legislature bldg. that he stands on has some interesting architecture, but has been photographed to death, by way better photographers than me.
