My avatar was a dog that peed as a special trick.

i remember playing AW in all it's custom midi music glory back in the day. some of the areas people made were really good, then years later i saw second life and was appalled at how bad everything but the fursuits and yiff beds were, and more appalled that said suits and beds existed in the first place.

I remember reading about Asheron's Call 2 going offline, and thinking how creepy it must have been for the players.

Now I play World of Warcraft, and I know how creepy it must have been for them.

Yeah. That's rather surprising. I wonder if the glass palace I built on Mars is still there.

The company focuses most of its attention on white-label products these days, but the original worlds are still in their universe and most everything is still alive and kickin'.

I've got stuff from years back that's still around.

I've never heard of Active Worlds. It sounds like one of those fake MMOs they show one time on shows like Law and Order SVU.

Should my geek pride be wounded for not having heard of either?

I don't know if "weird" is the world to describe it. I was pretty depressed when the ImagiNation Network (aka, the Sierra Network) shut down in 1996. I then switched to The Realm, then to EQ in 1999. None of the new MMORPGs have been able to fill the void created by the shut-down of INN... :(

Worlds Chat exists independently from AW these days. I don't think there's been innovative stuff in Worlds for years now, but it still has mirrors and non-euclidean(?) spaces, and AW only has crappy mirrors [and no non-euclidean], and SL has none of that.

Um yes ;)

I know about that. That I remember. I'm not sure how I should feel for remembering though.

My favorite thing on Worlds Chat was the total lack of rhyme or reason to the avatars, a dog, a cartoon dominatrixy figure, a floating disembodied head etc.

Didn't buy my mechanohog on credit, so I'm not concerned.

You realize Worlds Chat is still around? I joined in 2001, but haven't been on in a while. SirGemini gave me a VIP since I was around way back when. Didn't really renew it though. Were you around for actual 3d avatars? [those are VIP only]. Were you around when "VIP" became a term? [It means paying customer]

I hope not. I've been playing MMOs regularly since 99 (AC, SB, FFXI, WoW) and have never heard of either of these.

Also: you'll never take my Amani War Bear.

AW was most popular from the late 90's til '02 and it's fallen from glory since then.

I started with AW in 1996. It used to be very fun, with Wild West rules. It was free, and the owners promised it would ALWAYS be free. I even went to Europe to visit people I met in AW. Then they sold out, and started charging $5.00 a month for citizenship rights (no deletion of property, upgrades of browser abilities). Along with fees came rules. Ridiculous rules. It's a very polite society. Also very unpopulated. There used to be 150-200 people at Ground Zero at any given time. Now, they're lucky to have 10-15. I'm sad for what AW decided to become. It used to be an awesome program.

I think I've been on TF too long. Every time someone uses the abbreviation AW, I automatically think they're talking about Attention Whores.

Oh, and no one can take my Brewfest Ram, my Violet Proto-drake or my Blue Drake.

Hmmm was that the one MTV promoted for a bit back in the mid 90's or a different "virtual reality" program? Now that I think about it I doubt it was, but it sounds really familiar.
Also, what happened to those virtual reality web addresses? I was only like 8 so I don't fully remember but I do recall thinking how cool it was that they didn't use the "http:\\" at the beginning that everything else did. VR might have been in there somewhere, but I can't picture it.

Yes. It'd be like being a car fanatic and not knowing what the first cars were.

I check in AW every few months; hang around for days, etc, when I think of it. I enjoy it when I'm there, but usually end up getting busy and obsessed by other things. Things built on Mars or Alpha are still there, but they've updated portals and locations to places that are a bit shinier and fancier. Still like the original Mars portal best though. :)
