(Ars Technica)   Ars Technica asks readers to turn off ad-block on its website to help save the site. On that note, if Farkers out there don't mind turning off adblock for Fark we'd sure appreciate it too -Drew (link fixed)   (arstechnica.com) divider line

I can do that.

2010-03-09 12:32:30 PM
Since you asked so nicely...I'll add an exception for fark...

2010-03-09 12:32:53 PM
Eeeyeah, no. Love this place and all, but I'm not subjecting my systems to malicious code you guys have absolutely no control over.

2010-03-09 12:32:59 PM
Sure, if you make sure the ads don't bug the shiat out of me.

Flashy adds, pop up ads, punch the monkey ads, NSFWish ads, all can FOAD.

2010-03-09 12:33:02 PM
I have it off just for you

2010-03-09 12:33:06 PM
No.

2010-03-09 12:33:17 PM
All my favorite sites are un-adblocked.

i've chosen my side in the food wars and am about to buy from progressive direct

2010-03-09 12:34:00 PM
No. Get a real job, hippy.

2010-03-09 12:34:03 PM
I used to, until the ads began taking up more space than the actual content.

2010-03-09 12:34:07 PM
how much will you make if we do?

2010-03-09 12:34:17 PM
Ha no.

2010-03-09 12:34:31 PM
ummm... no,
but thanks for asking nicely

2010-03-09 12:34:43 PM
I turned it off and the next time I loaded Fark I got a popover.

Nope.

Sorry.

You get my $5 a month, my conscience is clear.

2010-03-09 12:34:45 PM
Sorry Drew, but I didn't make an exception for Ars, and I'm not making one for Fark. Truthfully, 99% of ads just don't interest me, and the Internet looks a lot cleaner and safer (although safety isn't a big issue with Fark's ads) without them. So I'll just keep on paying a subscription :)

In before the Farkers who have the PITA thing from the Politics tab adblocked.

2010-03-09 12:35:02 PM
have a published policy regarding the content (no script, no flash, no NSFW) of your ads. Then you've got a deal.

2010-03-09 12:35:07 PM
This TFer will not be turning off ABP until there's no ads on TF.

2010-03-09 12:35:14 PM
If we say no, do we get in trouble?

2010-03-09 12:35:16 PM

missmarsha: how much will you make if we do?

I think that's a fair question.

2010-03-09 12:35:20 PM
I will leave ads on at the low, low price of 20 dollars each. I can be paid weekly or monthly.

2010-03-09 12:35:21 PM
Fark looks exactly the same to me with it enabled or disabled, except for the "hosted by blue one" and "link to us" pictures don't appear with adblock plus on. I attribute this to the various other addons I have.

This.

I've never run ad-block. Learned to ignore ads long ago.

Arkham: Sure, if you make sure the ads don't bug the shiat out of me.

This.

We'll add a Fark exception, when Fark takes a bit of a role in curbing abusive ads.

I have that huge TotalFark banner on the top of the site adblocked, simply because it was annoying me.

For you Drew, anything.

I'll turn the ads back on here if I get a cut of the revenue generated from the content I help produce.

Baskanavitch: All my favorite sites are un-adblocked.

But what about Ars Technica?

2010-03-09 12:36:28 PM
You make TF free for me and I'll turn ad-block off for you.

2010-03-09 12:36:29 PM
Hell, I'd pay $10/month to have no ads on TF.

2010-03-09 12:36:47 PM
Maybe if the ads on Fark didn't hog up so much real estate I would consider doing so. I use a grease monkey script for this site as it is almost unreadable on my tiny netbook.

2010-03-09 12:36:48 PM
Many of the ads show up despite adblock in FF.

2010-03-09 12:36:49 PM
no, I'm not paying money to look at ads.

2010-03-09 12:36:50 PM
What the hell are you babbling about?

2010-03-09 12:36:57 PM

NallTWD: Eeeyeah, no. Love this place and all, but I'm not subjecting my systems to malicious code you guys have absolutely no control over.

This.

Also, both sites have options to subscribe for $5/month. There are plenty of TFers to help cover costs.

2010-03-09 12:37:04 PM
Adblock's not going away until they have a better way of filtering out trojan injectors and ads that draw attention to the fact that I'm not working.

2010-03-09 12:37:18 PM
I don't run Adblock but I do run NoScript. Image ads? Fine. Ani-flashy and potentially malicious ads? Eat a bowl of dicks.

2010-03-09 12:37:22 PM

PersistantRash: have a published policy regarding the content (no script, no flash, no NSFW) of your ads. Then you've got a deal.

really, I don't block the ads from CNN... I never thought to, perhaps because they don't shat in my face. Just have a basic straight forward approval policy for ads, a "no face shiatting" policy. I mean, think about it, ALL I'm asking you to do is STOP trying to shiat in my eyes. I don't think that's unreasonable.

2010-03-09 12:37:24 PM
Drew, as much as I love this place, I love it more when I don't see all the ads. I understand you need beer money and whatnot, but my Fark experience is SOOOO much better without all the nonsense.

Yep, do away with any noise making or sliding, moving ads and we'll see.

I never bothered blocking anything in the first place, personally.

Let me know when the ads come directly from a Fark subdomain rather than an ad farm, include no Javascript, and are strictly static images or text, and I'll consider it.

NallTWD: Eeeyeah, no. Love this place and all, but I'm not subjecting my systems to malicious code you guys have absolutely no control over.

Yup. Besides, I pay my tithe every month like a good TFette.

2010-03-09 12:39:15 PM
Did that a looooong time ago.

2010-03-09 12:39:18 PM
People who block ads are probably not going to click on them anyway. If you're selling impressions, go with Adsense. Nothing has me blocking advertising on a site faster than animated ads, sounds, and the occasional malware delivered via advertising.

I used to run with no ad-block on websites that I frequent, including Fark, but when I was prompted to download a .pdf from Fark (through a 3rd party advertisement) that contained code to fetch and run an executable off the web, Fark went on the list as well.

Sad, but true.

2010-03-09 12:39:22 PM
Done.

It amazes me, I have used fark for over twice as long as you, and have never had a issue with the adds here(Fark addblock exception added years ago), they have never infected my machine, and have never caused me a problem....

Am I just that Amazing that the stuff dose not infect any of my computers but wrecks havoc over some farkers, Or is said "Malicous Code" just something folks make up as an excuse why they have an infected computer?
