No, cutting all funding from schools isn't the answer, AirForceVet, but neither is shoveling more money into a system that doesn't produce any results. The superintendant in the KCMO school district is suggesting that they allow a 5-year plan for high school students here. This district has one of the highest per-capita expenditures on students. What the fark?!?
2003-04-23 10:59:20 AM
I'm a T.A. working on my masters, and the girls that just step out of H.S. look like they just came from a Maxim shoot. WTF is going on around here?
2003-04-23 10:59:40 AM

Did the kids dad ever pay for the repairs, btw? And you're girlfriend deserves a dumbass tag. She puts the problem off to someone else. Should take matters into her own hands... -whips out the shock collar-
2003-04-23 10:59:59 AM
There really is no solution to this.

Parents who can afford to do so are sending their kids to private schools, so the public ones tend to be made up of the poorer families who don't value education as highly.

It will keep getting worse.
2003-04-23 11:00:25 AM
There are many different reasons why kids are complete asshats now. One of which is, not being able to hit children.

In today's society, beating your children is frowned upon.

Let's face it, if a child has no fear of being beaten, backhanded, spanked, tied up, or starved for several days, the child will most likely do as he or she pleases.
2003-04-23 11:01:03 AM
Nice article, mentions everything that sucked about high school. As well as it mentions why I hate most americans
Blessed with everything, thankful for nothing
2003-04-23 11:01:37 AM
Kids today need jobs. Parents buy them anything they want, and that's where it aaaaall starts.
2003-04-23 11:01:42 AM
Thats nuthin' my high-school was so messed up I had to lower my prices on crack to get the teachers out of the market. When I did that the principal pulled a gun on me and demanded to be "in on the action." When I went to the school board about this they brushed me off and later put in a crack vending machine pricing ME out of the market.

Or maybe that was a premonition...
2003-04-23 11:01:53 AM
I also like what Dennis Miller said. We should change it so that every teacher gets a percentage of their students future income when their students become adults. You think that will motivate them to make sure Tommy can correctly spell m-i-s-s-i-s-s-i-p-p-i or know where Iraq is on a map.

I mean lets face it, the children are not the only problem with the educational systema as whole.
2003-04-23 11:02:12 AM
Those kids need Mrs. Crawford's rubber hose!
2003-04-23 11:02:27 AM
Pugsley: A "B" average? Big deal, that's only a 3.0. I'm not impressed.
2003-04-23 11:02:36 AM
Hear, Hear Semi-Sane.

I was smacked around when I fell out of line, and it is my belief that I'm all the better for it. It this time-out shiat was to be replaced by good, ol' fashion ass-kickings, kids would not be the assholes that they are today.

/shakes fist @ young whipper-snappers.

I can top you. This past Easter Sunday in church, a 15 year old girl wore a skirt that was unbelievably short. And the church I go to (it's the church of my husband's family, not necessarily my choice) is EXTREMELY conservative. She got some looks, that's for sure.

California loses money...

Schools producing inadequate students...

How, oh how, could the marvels of socialist engineering be failing?

2003-04-23 11:02:56 AM
Boot20, I've found that the rich drug-infested schools are the most fun.
2003-04-23 11:02:57 AM
As a student who spent two years of high school at a Catholic HS, let me tell you this: Public schools are better.

Private schools are whores, they invest all their time an effort into sports, speech, etc. They don't care about academics. They dont have enough people to have a gradient of difficulty in their course selection, so they have all the classes be aimed at your average child's ability--which isn't shiat.
2003-04-23 11:02:57 AM
I hear ya! I caught the start of the "dress like a whore" thing when I was a senior ('97) but it's grown like crazy since then. Can't say I mind it too much.. but if that was my daughter (don't have one) she wouldn't be dressing like that.
2003-04-23 11:03:17 AM
Throw more money at the problem.

Back in my day, we learned to get by with the very basics.
2003-04-23 11:03:41 AM
This is point 82,664 in my argument for forced, IQ-based sterilization of 10 yr olds.

Any of you Farkers have kids? Why are you farking up so bad? Admit it; you weren't ready for kids. What happened? Condom slip? Real drunk?

Maybe if we drag your asses out to the public square when your kids misbehave and give you about 45 seconds to convince us that you don't need to be sprayed down with Mace, you'd get the point. If that doesn't correct your kid's behavior, we'll just shoot your kid. Kids are a dime a dozen; we won't even miss a few of 'em. You might, but your kid sucked anyway, and you're an asshat who got Maced in the public square; so tough shiat.
2003-04-23 11:03:44 AM
I agree... I tried to discipline my girlfriends brat yesterday, I actually yelled at the kid and threatened him with a spanking, and the kid laughed in my face.... he's 6 years old. And to make matters worse, his mother came down, yelled at me for yelling at the kid, and as soon as she left the room the kid started laughing at me again.
2003-04-23 11:03:44 AM
Hmm, because I was born with a submissive personality doesn't mean that I lack own will.
2003-04-23 11:03:55 AM
Gator8387: I respect your point with regard to the "value of education" accorded by less well-off people, but the one of the important issues here (insofar as kids are concerned) is their complete and utter lack of civility and manners...
2003-04-23 11:04:10 AM
We also have to blame the shiat that gets taught in public schools. So much of it (esp. History) has been co-opted and rewritten by special interests groups that students aren't learning anything truthful- and they know it. Shiat, in my HS History class the teacher and book both said that Columbus landed on American soil (read North American continent) and mentioned nothing about his massacring the Arawaks. And don't even get me started about how it portrayed the South in the Civil War and Reconstruction!
2003-04-23 11:04:25 AM
AirForceVet That's your serving suggestion, not mine. I'm only pointing out the (obviously painful) fact that your M.Ed-degreed pals in the teachers' union have been in complete charge of this trainwerck for the past forty years.

exeunt, because i'm too cowardly to sustain a flame-war.
2003-04-23 11:04:48 AM
What's the deal with Cola and a 3rd grader now..?
2003-04-23 11:04:51 AM
Obvious and absolutely true. We live in Plano, Texas, where my wife taught English for three years. Plano is home to a bunch of white, upper middle-class conservative whiners whose idea of parenting seems to be giving their kids credit cards & expensive cars, taking them to church on Sunday, and pretty much leaving it at that. If the kid does anything wrong and gets disciplined for it, their job is not to biatch the kid out, but to biatch out the teacher and/or principal until they cave (which they do more often than not -- gotta keep the taxpayers happy!)

Know what's funny? You do side-by-side comparisons of these spoiled white kids and compare them against 2nd or 3rd generation Chinese immigrant families -- same income brackets, same neighborhood, everything -- and the Chinese-American kids will beat the white kids in academics just about every single time. Why? They do the farking homework and don't moan and complain about how hard their lives are and how no one understands them and blah blah blah daddy will you buy me a new car since I crashed the old one?

NOTE: The above rant is based on sterotypes and my experiences. Your mileage may vary, but there are actual experiences to back up every single accusation made above.
2003-04-23 11:05:53 AM
My biggest problem with public schooling was boredom. Most of my teachers treated the class like a daycare. I never enjoyed school until I got to college, there I was treated like an adult and actually taught something. I was a b-c student in highschool but held 3.7 gpa in college taking honors classes. I think too many teachers have given up and become babysitters without even realizing what they've become.
2003-04-23 11:06:17 AM
Bass555: Amen!!

Clickman: The dent is still there. I work for an attorney, we talked about it and decided to not do anything. The family has no assets (they were renting) and shortly after that dad lost his job and they moved. It was one of those "you gotta pick your battles" thing. For all I know, if I had pursued it, they would have probably vandalized my car... One of my neighbors had someone towed out of their parking space (we have assigned parking) and woke up the next morning to find his tires slashed...

Lovely world we live in...
2003-04-23 11:06:53 AM
Reading stuff like this, makes me NOT want to ever have kids. Or keep em locked down in the basement, if I do.
2003-04-23 11:06:55 AM
Perhaps if the parents tried to be more of a parent and less of being a friend to their children.. Not saying both can't be possible, but I think you have to tell them no at least once a year.

Know whey dogs are so loyal? They fear us. Know why they learn our stupid tricks and can be "house broken" really quick. They get punished if they don't.

Kids today have no fear of anything. Let's treat them like dogs as we did a generation ago. Just so long as they don't start licking their crotchs though.
2003-04-23 11:07:13 AM
TripleWithCheese: I completely agree with that assessment of HS! Thank god for college.
2003-04-23 11:07:35 AM

You are a true idiot. Haven't you noticed the americans posting here talking about how much the school systems sucks and wanting to change it? The problems are pretty deep (political, social, and a total lack of parenting) and won't be solved over night.

Hell, I'm American and the only way I could go to school is with the help of Uncle Sam (GI Bill and stafford/perkins loans).

'Course you are just bitter because you aren't an American ;-)
2003-04-23 11:07:46 AM
Gotta show 'em yo' PimpHand(tm) Bitterman!

Either that or dump the broad.
2003-04-23 11:07:52 AM
When I was a waiter I saw all sorts of things that made me aghast. One time I saw a kid call his mom a "big fat liar" and absolutely nothing was done.

On another note, kids have so many choices these days that are totally unnecessary.
Mom - "Honey, do you want sprite, coke, or juice?"
kid - "....."
Mom - "Honey.... sprite, coke, or juice?"
kid - (picking nose)
Mom - "Stop picking your nose, honey. Want a sprite? Coke? Juice?"
kid - (coudn't care less)
----meanwhile, I'm standing there trying to take an order while everyone's life is on hold waiting for this little munchkin to make up his mind-----

SO aggravating.

/end rant
2003-04-23 11:07:57 AM
i agree with please. too many of them just sit around the corner after school. a lot of kids don't know what the value of a dollar is.

Funding for Public Agenda's research and citizen work comes from foundations, professional associations, coalitions and corporations. Recent funders include...The American Federation of Teachers and The National Education Association

Shocking that the study found "no one wants accountability" and "it's not the teachers' fault".
2003-04-23 11:08:52 AM
My girlfriend is a teacher, and she has had parents (the ones that show up and are sober) ask her the following:

1. Do you think he's depressed?
2. Do you think he has ADD?
3. Can you give him a passing grade, so he can play baseball?
4. Well, that's just the way she deals with authority.

Adults act more like children, while children are exposed to adult activities without any knowledge of the consequences of their actions. Gabbo was right. All the kids are just lil' SOBs. Discipline and standards are non-existent because we might hurt the feelings of these ignorant scumbags, and hurting their feelings is what is causing them to "lash out."

BULLshiat. Too many children and teens cultivate their ignorance. I think we need parents and teachers that are more like Sgt. Hartman. Someone needs to tell them that they are pukes, and that they need to be made into something useful.

/red-faced rant over
2003-04-23 11:09:08 AM
Some of this stems from the baby boomer " I'm my kids best friend" crap. Grow up. You're the adult. Stop doing childish things. Give rules not guidelines. Love is raising a well adjusted member of society, not pandering to your child's every wish. Schools get better when parents get some edumacation too.

Krugar -

Holy shiat.... that's awsome.
2003-04-23 11:09:51 AM
I'm a high-school Farkette, and I hate everything about it. School--get this--is making it harder for me to learn. Too much of my time is devoted to meaningless busywork and textbook memorization, time that I could be spending reading encyclopedias, just like I used to do back in the second grade (no joke). You know, before school started eating up too much of my day for me to be able to worry about trivial things such as learning.

I'm sixteen now, and I just want to get my GED and get out of school so I can maybe do something meaningful with my f*cking life. But no. If I don't get a high-school diploma, my destiny as a miserable little wage slave, who will never amount to anything, will be secure. (But wasn't it already?)

Christ, and people wonder why "goths" have become so prevalent among youth in recent years. Wouldn't you be gloomy too?
2003-04-23 11:09:59 AM
Time to leave that relationship, Bitterman. She obviously doesn't respect you that much, and apparently you have some major differences when it comes to child discipline.

2003-04-23 11:10:32 AM
Stevarooni, WHAT system that doesn't produce any results? You're literate, aren't you? More than 99% of Americans are.

Gator8387 says it nicely concerning poor parenting and undisciplined kids. My great concern is politicians linking real public school problems into hype to get elected, i.e. cut taxes. Who doesn't want to pay more? Unfortunately, you get what you pay for in public services to include police protection, fire prevention, public roads, sanitation, environmental monitoring, national defense, etc.

I like public schools and know they do a pretty good job overall. We wouldn't be the greatest nation in the world if they weren't. Of course improvement is always needed. I just don't believe the institution is broke, just abused by the politicians.
2003-04-23 11:10:54 AM
Public schools are obsolete. Nothing but a hold over from the industrial revolution.

There needs to be more differentiation at an earlier age, maybe @ 14 yrs. If a kid is lousy at english/composition but is a mechanical genius, let him forego the mandatory four years of English and let him concentrate on developing his gifts. He'll still get his basic knowledge because he'll be more interested in what he is learning, therefore he'll pay attention more.
2003-04-23 11:10:55 AM
AuntofDogface: More to the point, if we, as a society, put more value in teaching manners, etc., and taught children to take pride in their use instead of valuing "thug"-type and anti-social behavior, maybe thins would be better off...
2003-04-23 11:11:32 AM
I think you have it backwards. Dogs are a parasite that have manipulated their host (humanity) into thinking that they are subservient. Actually, dogs call the shots.
2003-04-23 11:11:35 AM
I'm with Please, too. I live in a very affluent neighborhood - best schools, lots community involvement, etc. The kids all have nicer cars than me, and none of them work. They just congregate at Starbucks and smoke. They have everything they could need in a community, and they take it all for granted.

[/generalization - but it is the bad kids that you notice most]
2003-04-23 11:11:41 AM
Kids today are seriuosly out of control. I'm in college now but i still have friends in H.S. and i hear some of the crap they get into. By the time I graduated last year school had stopped being about going to class and had turned into one big social scene where everyone was focused on who was gonna have the biggest party and the most beer and drugs. Both of my parents are teachers and I hear a lot of crap from them. Like an 8th grader being sent home for having her G-String pulled up on her hips and sticking out of the back of her short skirt. Also my mom has a freshman that is failing every class and his mother has called the school asking why they are singleing him out. The asshats mother fails to realize that its no ones fault but the kids and hers as a parent that he doesnt do any of his work or homework, or even attempt to take his tests. Personally I think all of the crap today is a result of poor parenting, and all this new-age parenting b.s. like "we need to support little johnny in his descision," the problem is that little johnny is five years old you stupid ignorant asshats. Oh and what is up with not being able to smack your kids when they are being brats? When I was a kid and mouthed off to a parent I got jap-slapped. After one or two swift back hands I knew darn well not to mess with my parents. Discipline does not equal abuse!!!!!
2003-04-23 11:12:02 AM
Diorama. I thought I would never see that word again. I built a very sweet diorama of Gideon Yago farking Kelly Osborne in the ass when I was at PS 391. They suspended me for half a year, but they couldn't suppress my art.

By the way, if you're going to be a grammar Nazi, learn how to spell grammar. Or don't--that's funny for the rest of us.

Carry on.

Brought to you by the people at Mutual of Omaha; people who you can count on when the going's tough.
