This is a good time to reflect on how Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld are all doing interviews from comfortable positions in life, taking potshots at Obama, and daring to tell him that he isn't doing it right with Afghanistan and Iraq.

And what's happened to Karl Rove these days? We gotta get the band back together.

I think it is fascinating that this same comment, in an active thread, would have a dozen replies in 24 hours, but in the "politics forum", it goes lonely for a month.

I am sure that there are ways to set up a forum to keep it alive, but it is not my area of expertise.

I suppose if you wanted to revive the forum, you could bring up gun control, but that might be considered too obvious.

Guns are stupid. This country is overboard crazy in making them more important than they are. It's neurotic behavior. Obsessive.

Bonus: The NRA controls the gun debate.

Fark: The 2nd Amendment is in fact subject to regulation

Ultrafark: We should be raising taxes to allow better access to mental health care. That means for everyone.

The first step towards universal health care.

God why is this forum always empty? Is this a tax write-off?

Today's topic: how do we move past the current entrenched political system?

What's the deal with Write-in candidates in Texas?  I noticed in some races the voting machine didn't present the option to write a candidate in--and one of those was one where I wanted to write in George Costanza as a symbolic vote against all the idiots on the ballot (I just voted for the Green Party candidate instead.  Close enough).

I did some digging and it looks like write-in candidates only actually get counted if they declare themselves a candidate and fill out essentially the same paperwork as the regular candidates.  So, my guess is that the machine only shows the write-in option for races where 1 or more people have declared write-in candidacy.  Just seems wrong to me.  I should be able to vote for whomever I want, even if it's not going to count.

dottedmint: Well...

Congrats to Obama.

Now the Democrats have no excuse.

I only wonder if they really know what they are going to do.

Iraq: We have already started to pull out troops and last month and we did not have even one combat related death. So clearly the surge worked and even a President McCain would have continued to pull troops out of Iraq. However if things get worse would he continue to pull troops out?

Afghanistan: If things get much worse and more and more troops start getting killed will Democrats stay there or will they start saying the "cost" is too much and start calling for the US to pull out?

Iran: If Iran gets nukes what would an Obama White House do? What will he do to try to keep Iran from getting nukes?

Taxes: When has raising taxes ever HELPED an economy?

Energy production: Are we going to have more or less drilling for oil in the US? IF gas prices go back up to record levels will they continue to block drilling? Will they raise taxes on oil Cos? Will the costs of "Cap and Trade" be passed onto customers? If so that would make almost all of our energy more expensive. What will you do when your electric bill jumps?

Terrorism: Obama is going to start getting reports on the threats that this country faces. How agressive will he be at hunting them down and preventing an attack against this country? What would happen if we get hit and it is found out that Obama was not agressively hunting them down?

Fairness Doctrine: Will the Democrats really try to push for a government controlled media? You cannot have free speech if you are forced to speak. And why should newspapers be exempt?

Sub-Prime lending: Will Democrats push for banks to loan money to people who can't afford it? That is one thing that has caused our current mess and I'm wondering if they are going to continue to push for that. Or are they going to ok wtih the "poor" not getting loans?

Well...

These are just a few issues that will face Obama and the Democrats. A ...

Interesting. Nothing much has changed except we did go after a shiatload of terrorists.

Jeb Bush: People Need to Work Longer Hours

"My aspiration for the country and I believe we can achieve it, is 4 percent growth as far as the eye can see. Which means we have to be a lot more productive, workforce participation has to rise from its all-time modern lows. It means that people need to work longer hours" and, through their productivity, gain more income for their families. That's the only way we're going to get out of this rut that we're in."

Devotes of the Political Compass stuff: What do you guys think of this?

img.fark.netView Full Size

I ask because the chart is getting awfully congested. I was thinking of doing several of them, and breaking them down based on something like this... (breaking down the 3rd quadrant into maybe 2 or 4 charts). Except, I have no idea where this came from or how "annoyed" people will be with further labels... /shrug. I guess I'm just looking for input.

There are other versions of this, each with varying labels. (I'm not too thrilled with the designations in the upper right of Quadrant 1). GIS: "political compass regions ".

When coupled with the correct chart coordinates it's a whole new vocabulary that I don't think we would use all that much. It's more granularity than we need here on Fark, in my opinion.

Yeah, you're right. The problem is, if we zoom in to quadrant 3, there's really nothing interesting to delineate it. It fails to action oriented, visually interesting...or capable of producing emotional moments. That's why zones would be nice...

Come at me, bro

Alas, for better or worse, today the world has President Elect Trump.

‘’ 2016-11-14 01:17:40 PM
We need of list of bad things Trump promised.  There are of course some good things Trump promised to do, but I'm talking about the things Trump promised that his supporters are going to probably say are being overblown and compare to saying "Obama is going to take all of your guns!" (Something Obama obviously never said or promised).  Again, this is not a complete list of promises, just the ones that I'm worried he might actually succeed in accomplishing.
Please add to this list as needed.

Things that Trump promised to do that would be bad for the US:

Bring back waterboarding and start torturing.
Target the families of 'terrorists' by the military.
*Build a big, beautiful wall on our southern border (and make Mexico pay for it).
Create a special prosecutor for Hillary.
Deport all illegal aliens including their children.
*Ban all Muslim from entering the US coontil some unspecified date).
Bring back the coal industry in the US.
*Get rid of Obamacare completely.
Force companies to not off shore work.  Like forcing Apple to make computers in the USA.
Expose the drought hoax in California.
Get rid of the Iran treaty.
*Get rid of NAFTA and the TPP.
Create federal libel laws that will allow for easier suing of the press.
Ban some press from the White House.
Support nukes proliferating faster and more widely around the world.
Follow Russia's lead in Syria and against ISIS.
Make everyone say "Merry Christmas" instead of something else.
Get rid of Common Core.
Defund Planned Parenthood.
Use the term "Radical Islamic Terrorism" exclusively.
Bar Syrian refugees from entering the country and kick out any who are already living here.
Stop spending money on space exploration.
Shut down parts of the Internet (to stop ISIS recruiting)
End birthright citizenship.
*Cancel Obama executive actions on immigration and guns
*Impose higher tariffs on imported goods.
*Tax cuts for the rich.
*Get rid of the inheritance tax.
Not defend NATO allies that are behind in their dues.

*These were promised in the first 100 days.

It's a little inside baseball-ish on how the queue works, but I'll explain it in generic terms as much as possible. Fark doesn't get paid by WaPo(or anyone) to greenlight their content. The process of link selection is what sometimes leads to a cluster of links from the same source.

So the admin wakes up and gets on the queue in the morning after the press is pushing hundreds of articles and the queue is filling up with them. He(let's assume it's drew for this) goes through the hundreds of links and redlights all the known repeats, crappy headlines, and TF-only links. What's left is a fairly large list of headlines and links that made the first cut, so now he whittles it down to his favorite headline for each story and starts greening headlines that get scheduled to all the tabs for the next few hours. Because he's greening across tabs and they're getting auto-scheduled accordingly, he might not notice that several WaPo linked headlines got bunched into the Poltab(or entertainment, or main) since he isnt doing one tab at a time.

Adding to this, the heavier submitters tend to have favorite sites where they can bounce around and get 5 submissions in one site stop. Because the heavier subs generally write consistently better headlines than an average one-off submitter, their headlines are more likely to make that first cut and have multiple submissions greened from their pet sites.

We have used several different methods to combat this site clumping if your eyes aren't glazed over with boredom, but the big contributing factor here is that so many news sites are using paywalls now, that you notice it. Three years ago you could have read 5 WaPo links in a row and never thought about it, but now that paywall stops and irritates you, so it seems like every other fark link goes there.

That all makes sense... I think the frustrating thing is when I try and submit something from a site like The Independent(I think that's the one I came across lately), where that's the only site, and I get denied before even submitting it because the site has a paywall(It tells me this when checking the link). Then I come across an actual paywall, and have to jump through hoops(Switching browsers, switching from phone to desktop, doing the "incognito" thing if I'm using the right browser, etc.) to get it to open, and that same story is on other sites without walls. WaPo and New York Times(Or is it LA Times?) are the most common ones where this happens.

But at least these aren't American Thinker, Brietbart, Townhall, or Daily Mail links, so there's that... Working around a paywall is preferable to that derp. :-)
