Welcome to Farktography!

This Week's Theme: "Silent Decay."
Description
: Things that have lost the grandeur of their past, doesn't have to be abandoned.

We ask that before submitting your photos you read and adhere to the following submission rules, including but not limited to the following:

- Submissions must be photographs; screen captures do not count as photographs.
- You must be the original photographer of your entry. Do not submit anyone else's photography as your own.
- You are only allowed to enter a photograph once. Do not submit the same photo to another contest later.
- You may enter 3 photos in each contest as long as each photo is of a different composition.
- Please post each photo separately so they can be voted for individually.

Ideally, your photograph should be presented as taken, with as little alteration as possible either digitally in-camera or in your image editor during post-processing. No selectively applied digital effects! No removal or addition of image elements, no spot treatments, and no HDR images, please.

With few exceptions (red-eye removal, sensor or scan dust removal), modifications to the original photograph must be made evenly across the image.
See the rules for more information on acceptable modifications, or check in at the Farktography Forums.

Legal: All photographers submitting photos to this contest are the legal copyright holders for the photos submitted and the photos are not to be considered free for any other use without written consent from the submitting photographers.

To have your photo website listed on the Farktography home page, please send your Fark username and url to admin(at)farktography.net and we'll get you up forthwith. (also, indicate if you're willing to share your photographs for use as source images in PhotoShop contests)

- Drop by the Farktography Forum (for chatting, critique, techtalk and so on)

- Image hosting sites can be found here.

- Stats can be found here.

Say what you will about smoking, and as a smoker struggling to quit I will agree with you, there was a certain something about it back in the day. Watch any movie from the 1940's and you see what I am speaking of.

And of course, the idea of your body slowly, silently decaying from the very stupid thing you are doing fits the theme as well.

'3 MI's'

I admit that I am biased about this photo. I really like it. It represents a beginning of something I hope to do more - portraits of 'real' people.

I was out taking pics one day and stopped at a red light in front of this guy's house. His driveway was right there. I saw him on his front porch and said out loud, "what the hell..." and pulled in. I got out and explained that I do photo contests and would like to take his pic. He agreed. After a few shots I even set up an off camera flash and umbrella to his left.

He is in this theme due to three heart attacks. He's on medical disability. Didn't get his name.

The Frank Saxon House is a historic residence in Brooksville, Florida. It sits on the top of a hill at 200 South Saxon Avenue. On November 5, 1998, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Frank Saxon House is one of the earliest examples of Frame Vernacular architecture with Queen Anne Revival influence in Hernando County. The home was built by Frank Saxon in 1864 for his bride Tululu Hope, daughter of William Hope, one of the earliest settlers in the county. Mr. Saxon was a Civil War hero who was a member of the Hernando Wild Cats, a unit of the 3rd Regiment of the Confederate Army. After the war, Frank Saxon served as a member of the Florida Legislature representing Hernando County. The house is in an extreme state of disrepair with windows, doors, and parts of the roof missing. (info courtesy of Wiki (new window)

Not richly detailed, but I've always liked this one...
From a now-closed automobile factory... This large room was once a paint shop until a fire destroyed it in 2001. The room became a storage area and the large paint ovens removed, leaving the long trenches that always filled with rainwater.

Yes, it's an old sewer pipe, left over from the grand old days when we just pumped it out there. This is Sharp Park Beach in Pacifica, CA, within walking distance of the cliff that's crumbling into the ocean. There will be no photo of THAT particular decay, because it's a serious hazard, and I have no desire to get closer.

This is a remnant of track a couple miles from the Railway Society's museum, a few hundred feet east of Fort Weaver Road. The only reason I decided to go looking around here was because Google Earth showed there might be some remnant left in the old right-of-way in this area, and I found this. Large version here.

Things seems to have been broken over the last day or so... Here's a submission for "Silent Decay".

My original intent was to find an image of Rock of Cashel showing it's slow decay. But I just kept coming back to this one.

I took it with the "backup" point and shoot camera when I failed to charge my DSLR...

This is Michigan Central Station as seen from atop the MGM Grand Casino parking lot in Detroit. It was designed by the same firm as Grand Central Station in NYC and is most certainly a direct comparison of the fates of Detroit vs. NYC development in the 20'th century. Take note especially of ruined building in foreground.
