I remember a time when if a cop did something like that he would have been bombarded with snowballs.

The cop should be fired.

And if you beat him with a gun, you better kill him, because he'll keep comin' back and back until one of you is covered in snow.

The plainclothes officer or the uniform? If the uniform was responding to a call of a man with a gun, I'd have my pistol out of it's holder before I got there too.

From the comments:

At that point the officer started walking back to his car.

Then, one more snowball hit him in the cheek.

Officer Baylor went completely ballistic, running into the crowd and pushing people over to get to the person he thought threw that last snowball. Man, this guy cannot take a joke. He pulled his perceived attacker, a young man with a furry hat, out of hte crowd and back to the vehicle.

rofl I love it when someone has the balls at perfectly the right time.

/Devil's Advocate On

If black ski masks were being worn, it does slightly increase one's suspicion levels and might justify a formal inquiry. If the activity is harmless and civilian in nature, the incident is dropped with a warning not to pelt cars for safety reasons.

That being said, ski masks are NOT illegal in the US. Especially not in the cold, but there is very fine line on what not to cross in a policeman's line of duty. The plainclothes cop did cross that line. For that, he should be punished.

However, the uniformed cop was fully justified to have a weapon ready in responding to a call about an armed man.

Try wearing a hooded sweatshirt in the UK.

You might as well have pantyhose on your face.

WOW Nice to know from that article that you are legally allowed to wave a gun around at people in D.C. now, with no fear of so much as a ticket... they've really changed in just a few years.

2009-12-19 11:21:45 PM
Was there. F'ing a-hole protesters turned a fun neighborhood thing into something 'political'. We were haveing an in-house party and they decided to pelt cars. Some were aiming for the drivers side. Thanks for ruining our fun

2009-12-19 11:32:16 PM
"But things started to turn for the worse when the crowd -- some carrying anti-war signs and dressed all in black with masks -- began to pelt passing cars"

Cop was a dick for getting all power trippy with his gun, but so were the douchebags throwing snowballs at passing cars.

I love a good snowball fight, but potentially startling someone when behind the wheel of a vehicle seems just as dangerous as flashing a gun.

I saw some elementary school girls pulling up big chunks of ice in the corner of the fenced-in school yard. I glared at one and she dropped the ice and said "I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" as she backed away.

I always wondered if I was about to be killed by 4th grade girls with a chunk of ice to the neck, or I was just being a paranoid beeyotch (as usual).

Here in Reno we just run Hummer drivers off the road, and tell them to have their asses back in California before sundown.

I think the DC cops handled it maturely. If some anarchist punk throws an iceball at my $50,000 Hummer, I'd be a little perturbed. There were, fta, give or take 200 anarchist types out there and one plainclothes cop. If the cop perceived an immanent threat to his safety (getting his eye knocked out by an iceball), then I'd probably do the same thing.

I know the tone of these police incidents on Fark, and I'm normally the first to call shenanigans, but it isn't justified here.

Plain Clothes officer pulling out a gun and not identifying himself in DC? Yeah not surprised at all.

My friend works security at many bars n clubs in DC. One time a couple of patrons got rowdy and got thrown out of a bar. Next thing you know a group fight begins in front of the club. Three black guys come running up and engage in the melee. More club security comes out and starts throwing down with the rowdy patrons and the 3 black guys. At the end of the fight, 2 security guys get arrested for assaulting an officer. None in uniform, and none identifying themselves. And imagine who the judge is going to side with, when its the words of a security guy vs a cop.

I've also seen some super shady beat up cadillacs riding around through Silver Spring, running red lights. When they get pulled over, they stay in the left lane motor still running, cop in uniform asks for ID, DC cop flashes badges and off they go. They behave look and act just as shady as the criminals that fester the area.

Don't be fooled.

//There's a reason why DC has one of the highest density of lawyers in the country let alone the world.

Actually, FTFA, there were 200 people and a handful wearing "anarchist garb" (ie ski masks) and some anti-war protesters. This wasn't exactly an Emma Goldman rally.

I couldn't even make a decent snowball all day w/ this crappy powder. It all fell apart in hand and I couldn't get a good pack going so I can't even imagine how these people were able to get a good snowball fight going.

Cyrusv10: There were, fta, give or take 200 anarchist types out there...

The wording implies that you walked away thinking that there were approximately 200 anarchist types. Also this was 14th and U so more than likely 180 of these people were hipster douchebags... and I wish I was among them.
