Wow. I'm guessing the Italian secret service isn't exactly top of the line.

Berlusconi may be a creep, but I'm hoping they really nail the man who did this.

Dio mio! Is the cathedral alright?
I did hear that after the attack he had some great ideas for the nation, he was in-spired. And then he went back to playing with his girlfriend's duomos.

/lived 3 months in Italy, knew only 1 person who liked SilviO Berlusconi
//Tuscans for the most part don't like him

Lol, while it was a dick move, I generally support anyone who throws objects at corrupt politicians. I liked it when Sarah Palin had tomatoes thrown at her (lol, FAIL when it hit a cop) and I support it here to. Excellent pic.

Do you like it enough to do it yourself?

/Plenty of elected officials I don't like.

I do. The man's a fascist.

Then again, I'm for bringing back the guillotine and using it on white collar criminals. Particularly those who engage in fraudulent financial dealings, or allow such dealings to happen under their watch.

Gelatinous: The man's a fascist.

The word "fascist" gets used as an insult instead of a descriptive term these days, so much so that it's pretty much lost all meaning; liberals called Bush a fascist and conservatives are calling Obama one. It's annoying as hell, and it means that if a REAL fascist ever runs for election, no one's going to bat an eyelid, because the word gets thrown about so much.

Berlusconi should see jail time for the ridiculous number of crimes he's committed, but he isn't a facist.

My girlfriend was telling me about how the Berlusconi said something bad about Finnish churches when a Finnish woman living in Italy complained about crucifixes in public schools. Now the Finnish news sites have headlines about this along the lines of "Berlusconi bashes Finnish church, Italian church bashes Berlusconi"

This story is the perfect little microcosm of Silvio Berlusconi's incompetence, and also his great charisma.

Incompetence: Somehow, the man who controls all of Italian media has managed to anger the public so much that he has angry crowds out protesting him in the streets (not because of the variety of sexual indiscretions that make Tiger Woods look like a boy scout - more of an issue is alleged corruption and mob ties, and maybe a little bit, his new BFF Muammar Gaddhafi), and crazy people smacking him with statuary. I assume his bodyguards were hired to look badass and pick up hot ladies and not to actually guard the body of the G8's most orange leader.

Charisma: Silvio Berlusconi fortunately was on camera when this happened, like usual, and like usual, whatever happens to Silvio Berlusconi makes for compelling footage. The best part is when he is rushed to the car and then hurtles out, face still covered in blood. The BBC is interpreting this as Berlusconi coming out to say "I'm OK!" but it's pretty obvious from the look of rage on his blood-covered face that he wants to throttle the attacker for lèse-Berlusconeté.

Wait, More Incompetence: Berlusconi apparently doesn't have aides who carry Kleenex or handkerchiefs, or his aides think that having Berlusconi jump out of a car looking like a background vampire in True Blood is fine; either way that's poor media management, and so is having whiny flacks immediately telling the press that this is the fault of his political opponents who are focusing too much on his "personal life" and creating an atmosphere of hate. I felt sympathy for Berlusconi right up to then...

Yeah, it is fun when we throw things at political people we don't like or absolutely despise, but lets try to stick to nerf balls, pies or other harmless objects.

Berlusconi may be a rather randy jerk, but, wow, that was harsh.

Lets save the heavy duty objects (like red wing steel toed boots) for the politicos that deserve it like Palin, Bush, Coulter, Blair, Beck, Falwell (oh, wait, I already took care of him) anyone connected with "C" street etc. I kid!... kind of.

Considering how many governments Italy has had since WWII, I'm surprised an Italian PM hasn't been sucker punched before. That would be an interesting thing to research: have any been assassinated, kidnapped, cock punched?

Berlusconi is what you'd get if you added up all the worst traits of Tony Soprano, George W. Bush, Kim Jong-il, and Rupert Murdoch. It's not like him getting twatted with a heavy object and his teeth knocked in is going to change anything or make anything better, but I'm happy it happened. He's a fairly decent candidate for 'worst person on the planet'.

Thanks for mentioning this^

To the people showing compassion for Berlusconi: It's not like a pre-meditating sane person attacked him.

Still sad to see a 73 year old assaulted, but there are mitigating circumstances. It sounds like we are dealing with a person who doesn't adhere to society's contract.

Really?

You really think that was appropriate?

I do. The man's a fascist.

Then again, I'm for bringing back the guillotine and using it on white collar criminals. Particularly those who engage in fraudulent financial dealings, or allow such dealings to happen under their watch.

I guess since Bush left office, the new "in-thing" is to attack Berlusconi? Never mind that 99% of the idiots in this thread have never even been to Italy...

Fact is that Berlusconi is the only person capable of keeping Italy remotely in check and he HAS largely reduced the influence of the mob, which was needed in many parts of Italy.

He is the only leader who has ever had enough stability to do anything about the situation. He definitely earned some of that by corruption and his owning the media. That is undoubtedly a Bad Thing™.

However, this is Italy, not America. Nobody could attain that level of influence in Italy without being corrupt. The mob still have enough influence in the south to muddy the waters in many cases, and there are a million factions, all of whom (thanks to the wonders of proportional representation) all have a say, and are (as seen during Prodi's regime) willing to argue, fight and generally disrupt whenever they feel hard-done-by, which is frequently, and over the most ridiculously minor things.

So, Berlusconi may be corrupt and authoritarian. However, the first got him into a position where he could deal with the problems, and the second gave him the firepower to do so. I'm honestly not sure that a leader without those traits could have any hope of dealing with organised crime and other issues in Italy, as Berlusconi is doing. That may sound fatalistic but it's the truth.

And who seriously cares about his personal life? It doesn't mean anything.

So please stick to what you know (i.e. sucking Obama's cock) and leave Silvio alone.

Don't be a pussy. I fully support anyone who throws things at politicians that look down on, and rip off, their "subjects". Be they American, Italian, Libyan, or anything else. Politicians think they can get away with anything in the modern era, it's good when someone brings them back down to earth. I personally think we should be able to literally tar and feather congress members in the streets when they vote against their constituents. We technically could since nobody could stop a large enough angry mob, but people have become sedated and complacent in the theft these people pull off. Look where that's got us.

Also, when he called a press conference about all the affairs he'd been having, his first words were:

"I will take questions from the men. From the ladies I want only phone numbers."

I mean, come on. You'd have to be a complete homosexual not to appreciate the man. What a don.

Yeah that is pretty cool. I don't know why people hate this guy as I don't follow Italian politics. But you can't deny that some politicians deserve to be beaten mercilessly. California is a prime example, people there can't even own normal rifles because their politicians are lying assholes. Pelosi and Feinstein should be tarred and feathered for coming up with garbage like that.

Not that I would be against the professional help for Achmedinijahd coming from a professional sniper, mind you. Mugabe is somewhere in between.

Also, that kind of sh*t isn't supposed to happen in Western Europe.

Jamieboy: Berlusconi may be a rather randy jerk, but, wow, that was harsh.

Belusconi is not merely a Randy Jerk. He is a Mafioso. While they make for compelling entertainment over here, over there they are really bad news. They make Bushco's level of corruption look like stealing pens from the office. They are, not to put to fine a point on it, terrorists. And he is one of them.

Don't be confused and think that this happened because he can't keep his salami in his pantalones. No, this was probably someone who had his sons killed slowly by the mafia for doing something like trying to complete a water project in Sicily or refusing to pay protection money for for a government contract or simply for compteing with them in a legitimate business.

MikoSquiz: Berlusconi is what you'd get if you added up all the worst traits of Tony Soprano, George W. Bush, Kim Jong-il, and Rupert Murdoch. It's not like him getting twatted with a heavy object and his teeth knocked in is going to change anything or make anything better, but I'm happy it happened. He's a fairly decent candidate for 'worst person on the planet'.

He's got to lose out to Robert Mugabe and Chuck Taylor and Rodovan Karojic and Bin Laden et. al., but he's at least in the second tier (maybe even in the same league as bin Laden, except he has his done his killing retail and deniably.)

It doesn't matter. Sneak-attacking an old man is the height of cowardice.

This guy is just a crook like every other politician in history.

Yeah, but sneak-attacking an old man with 5 bodyguards is actually pretty ballsy.

It should have been a pie or dog shiat. But still, for a politician, he got off a lot easier than some of the victims of his more violent associations such as the mafia, or his authoritarian buddies. I'm sure the victims of those associations had far more to worry about than busted faces and absolutely certain that none of their perpetrators were or are going to be prosecuted to the extent that the statue thrower is going to experience.

Crime committed. Crime solved. Criminal will be prosecuted (hopefully, within the confines of the legal system). Berlusconi is getting rather fair treatment for this little experience. The victims of his policies and associations should be so lucky.

Not surprising that the tighty righties get their panties in a twist over an elite (that they like) getting injured. Meanwhile, they don't mind calling for the assassination of various world leaders of resource rich nations who don't play ball with American/British economic interests.

I am guessing he would have rather been teabagged.

2009-12-15 10:54:23 AM
considering the bs Berlusconi has pulled while in office, like retroactively making himself immune to prosecution for corporate crimes he committed before being elected, attempting to silence political dissent by bringing charges against those who speak against him or the Vatican, and using the power of the state to bully his corporate competitors, getting hit with a statue is small fry. If this were Italy during the 1800s, a statue getting lobbed at him would be the least of his concerns. The level of deference extended to politicians by Union citizens these days never ceases to amaze me.
