Upcoming links are chronological by the time/day they go live, so if you go to the upcoming links page caturday will always be at the top cause it's approved for Saturday's date.

I'm kidding

At least we'll have a better chance of find the Caturday thread even if it doesn't have the word "Caturday" in the description.

How did that happen anyway???

Just look for the greenlit link that goes to main 8am sat.

I know my rights! One of the amendments somewhere in the constitution says it it should have the word "Caturday" in it somewhere. If it doesn't explicitly say so, it probably does somewhere in some penumbra or something! Right??

things I do to my cats...: Yay for the new Caturday tag! I like it a lot.
Sorry there's no news about Gary though. Still keeping paws crossed for his safe return. :(

jaynleng: All I can offer in the way of cat vs. Christmas tree advice is pretty much the same as Sherpa said, use unbreakable ornaments of a size that cannot be eaten by a cat, do not use tinsel, and secure your tree in a good heavy base. Some good-quality LED lights would be better than the traditional glass kind as the bulbs are unbreakable and they are cool to the touch. Good luck!

And, unrelated but vaguely interesting, just now I finished a bowl of alphabet soup, and the last letters left in the bowl were T and F! LOL.

Well, it has been a rough week. This little guy had a rough start and was fading all week. Today he faded right away. All week he just clung to me for warmth. He'd sit on my chest and I'd cover him with the blanket while I watched TV, or I'd tuck him into the bib of my overhauls. It was very bad because he was supposed to be a little kids Christmas present. I tried. Really I did. "You can't win them all" doesn't make it hurt any less.

pardon this WoT, but it's important. will get to the posting of funneh kitteh pics at some point here :-)

ug. i just can't stand it anymore. feels like the neighbors are bordering on animal cruelty. it was below zero here last night and has been for much of this week. we have snow on the ground and yet, with the possible exception of last night (didn't see him), Patrick and his unrelated "sister" Zoey are outside all night all the time (i pretty much never see Zoey as she is way too skittish, but Patrick is nearly always outside if i make some noise and wait a few minutes). i can NOT bring them into my place nor would i be able to get them to come inside, BUT i do have a "dog house" outside in the front. i just can't stand it. i called Petco and they have this (new window) pet warmer pad that i feel i have to go get. an extra $40 is pretty tough to come by unfortunately right at the moment, especially since it isn't for "my" cat(s), but... i just can't stand it. i was thinking about getting just a $20 heating pad from Walgreens, but since this is specifically designed for pets and for semi-outside conditions, feels like i really should go with that one. the little house is a standard small to medium dog house and i have some waterproof carpet squares in it and such as well. i was going to put the pad in on top of the carpet squares, put a towel or two on top, and cover the entrance with a towel hanging down. and then put some food in a bowel to attract them. Patrick has finally decided it is ok to get a few pets from me so i don't think i'll have trouble coaxing him in there, hopefully Zoey will figure it out. there are other "stray" kittehs in the neighborhood that are also "outside", but they, being more self-sufficient, seem to have more of a way to find warm places. poor Patrick is "always" outside under the deck and seems like "dude! it's f*cking COLD out here!" and doesn't seem to have much of an idea where else to go.

i was also thinking of just putting some light bulbs in there with a cover over the entrance. not sure how much that would warm it up. a heat lamp type would probably be good. i wonder what the difference in energy usage, the ease of installing, all that jazz would be.

even though i don't hardly feel up to it at the moment (still pretty run down), i really think i am fed up with this situation to the point that i am going to do something about it tonight and i still have a couple hours to work with store-wise. i just can't stand to sleep indoors all bundled up knowing a sweet, pleasant kitty is 10-20 feet from me freezing his little butt off through no fault of his own.

i leave food out for him/them/whoever as often as a i can, in small amounts so they are eating frequently, especially Patrick. btw, he a solid black fluffy guy just a little "larger" than LittleOne.

ideas please? suggestions? tell me i'm a bleeding heart idiot? tell me i'm doing a good thing?

My cats are refusing to cooperate with my efforts to make them festive. Unsurprising, though.

And I forgot, dragonflysoul, that's wonderful news about Max. I mean, wonderful that he's ok and you know what's going on, not wonderful that he's got a problem to be dealt with. He looked miserable in the carrier. But it sounds like he's doing better, if he's running around playing, and that's great news, even if it makes him a little huffy.

And baka, is that your tree in those photos up top? I spy a runabout..

I got snow, that *always* makes me upbeat :) Yeah, apparently this is the earliest Houston has ever gotten snow (previously it was on Dec 10th, set last year, when we got a similar amount). Probably won't get snow again the rest of the winter. Which makes me sad. And this stuff was too wet to do anything with, so I couldn't even make a good snowkitty on the hood of my car. My wish for snow is eternal; at least today was a good day :)

thx for the words, but i was actually wondering more if the pet specific heating pad for $40 versus the people pad for $20 versus heating lights (not sure what that would cost or how difficult to deal with et cetera) is the right thing.

i just checked outside and though there is no outside outlet, i can use a light fixture and my handy "plug a cord into the fixture below the bulb" dongle to use for my outside cord.

also wondering about straw versus a towel versus other things. still have an hour and a half to get to the right store (pretty much have to leave within an hour).

tIdtmc,
Towels are best because they can mold them and snuggle. Straw IMHO isn't warm enough. A heat lightbulb would probably work the best and not start a fire or something. $40 pet pad is expensive and usually for sick or really spoiled cats! In an enclosed space, they make their own heat!!! A walgreens special should do nicely!
there, is that better?

Is that what that is? I saw it, but I couldn't figure out what it was. I was trying to match to Trek ships, though, which is probably what screwed me up :)

tIdtmc, I don't really have any useful advice as to products, I've never had cause to look into outdoor heating. Most winters down here, the shelter of nested boxes with towels and shredded paper is enough. Lights might be too warm.. I dunno, I don't know anything about those, either. The fine folks at the pet store might be helpful? Assuming they're not just trying to sell you something, anyway. Or if you know a helpful vet clinic, you might call and see what they think, since they're local to you with weather and all.

Unfortunately, neither of the dresses fit me. So, no pictures because my moms dress was WAYYYY too small... if you can believe it! So, both dresses are at said Moms house for alterations and stuff of that nature. Sigh... I am sorry about that.. picts would have been nice had they fit... : (

well, since the pad is designed to be usable outdoors (water resistent, not water proof, that's fine), the temps have been so bitterly cold even during the days a few days, this is specifically designed for pets, and they will price match Wall-f*ckingMart at $34, i think i am going to go with that one. i can try it out for a few days and see how well it works and take back if it seems lame. it would always be a handy thing to have around no matter who it is for also. i'll bet LO would love it too if he didn't like laying on my feet so much. :-)

oh, and i really don't think the Petco folks were doing a sale. they felt bad and were also wondering if this situation was bordering on animal cruelty.

i'm going to have to suggest that my buddy with an outside dog also get one of these. she guards a "store yard" at night and has a dog house, but this would be much better.

enclosed space being enough at -5'? i would still feel bad.

wish Petco was open 24 hours like Walgreens.

that's pretty much what i thought. being THIS cold, i could see it being life threatening. at the very least it could be life shortening to be in that degree of cold with no warming ability. i also have the feeling that he isn't really used to it, but he is seeming to do "ok". if nothing else, perhaps some of the other kittehs around will enjoy it if he finally gets to go inside or the like.

i just don't understand people that leave cats out all the time. i mean, if they are not "yours" or if they just show up, but his is THEIR NAMED cat. if i can get Zoey to go in there as well, i will feel really good about it.

since Gary took off, i won't even let LittleOne go outside without wearing his collar. very cute. "i would like to go outside please." "ok, here, let me put your collar on you." at first, he was "hey! no way! i don't want that thing back on!" now he's "ok. good. this means i get to go outside for a while. i can deal." it is a small nylon strap and plastic clip style, like with modern backpacks and it has a tag on it with the number for the vet - sadly, it was to be for Gary and if the number on the tag is used, they will ID him as Gary via shots records, but... *sigh*, obviously Gary isn't around to use it and i somehow doubt it would have mattered (i'm telling myself that loudly and often).

Being that I live in California (SF Bay Area) our local cats don't have the same problem. But if I needed to provide a cheap shelter for an outside cat, I would gather up a bunch of styrofoam packing slabs that always seem to be around, and build an insulating layer all around the inside of the doghouse, including floor and ceiling. I'd probably duct tape it. Then I would put a smaller box inside, with something soft, and a little catnip just for encouragement. A healthy cat can maintain it's own body temperature in a small, reasonably insulated space. I'd also put out some warm water flavored with chicken broth, because it sounds like even if your neighbors ever put out a water bowl, it's probably frozen over. Good luck--post photos!

completed.

got THIS (new window) warmer at a discount as Petco would match Wallf*ck's price, used my staple gun to put a folded towel over the entrance to the "dog house", a real cute heavy wooden barn imitation that someone built as deomstrations for their shed company, ran an outdoor extension cord from the backdoor light socket using a lightbulb-to-side-plug-with-pull-cord dongle and a three-to-two-prong-dongle around the back to the side near the front where the house is, arranged some waterproof carpet squares around under the warmer, put a doubled towel over the warmer, and nicened up the cord. waiting for it to warm for a while before i try and coax him out. i may not really try to coax him; he'll show up when he's hungry and i go outside and call him. then i'll put the food in there and see how it goes. i isn't nearly as cold tonight so i'm not worried, but i'm glad i did all this tonight. we are definitely going to have some deep snow to come and the temps stay well down in the 10's and -10's for days on end at that point with a foot or more of snow on the ground.

glad i did it. i feel much less "oh no! there's a freezing kitteh right outside my window! and i'm all warm and LO is sleeping on my head/lap/feet..."-guilty now.

heh. "not nearly as cold tonight" i said before seeing the temp - a nice toasty 24' at the moment. yesterday got UP to 10' and was down to -3' says the weather channel. also, what gets really bad is the wind chill and there will be little wind in there; may have to add some more door covering, but this is quite a good start. we will often have 25-40mph winds. oh yeah, just saw the forcast for the next few days -cold, cold, cold, and... cold for the next week with quite a bit of snow. yikes.

HE'S F*CKING LUCKY HE HAS STARTED TO LET ME TOUCH HIM. :-) DON'T THINK I'D HAVE DONE THIS HAD HE BEEN AS SKITTISH AS HE WAS UP TILL A FEW WEEKS AGO. heh heh. now hopefully he can bring Zoey in there too. they hang out together often, os perhaps she will follow him and/or find it when i only put food in there for them.

oh crap. i just realized that i will now have to actually go outside each time i give him/them food. was just setting it outside. oh well, small price for their comfort. me = lazy
