Eh? How long will it be before we all have to live our life based on stict Christian doctrine if this stuff gets written up in Congress? (Sex before marriage illegal? Noooooo) Isn't this the same sort of thing we are trying to "liberate" the Middle East from? When religion starts dabbling in affairs of state, it's always bad news. (see: Taliban, Spanish Inquisition, Salem witch trials, German Holocaust, not to mention the millions of others who have been killed in the name of God thoughout history) Ha, so the pot calls the kettle black.
It's this kind of thing that separation of church and state is supposed to avoid. For those of you who are devout Christians, hey, more power to you. You've got something to believe in. Great. But I have major problems when you try to shove your beliefs off on me, and that includes this crap resolution in Congress.
Yeah. Maybe God can end the war. Pshaw. No doubt it's the same God who told our Christian Warrior leader to start it in the first place.

Let's all go hungry for one day in the name of the boogeyman; then the next day we can go back to being the most wasteful bunch of pigs the earth has ever seen!

I love it!

But how will this "win the war"? I don't get it...

Notice how no Rep. from California signed this?
And notice how, with the exception of one dork from Pennsylvania, no one from the Northeast signed it either?
This is exactly why folks from both these regions feel righteous about looking down their noses at the remainder of the country.

ReaperCow - true.

But the only alternative to laying seige is to go toe-to-toe. Unfortunatley even the Brits have more expereince than us in that area (N. Ireland).

Can you imagine being an Amercian living in what? Altanta (5mil?)...and the Iraqis come in on I-20 in an armored colmn? It would take YEARS to flush us all out of there.

DROxINxTHExWIND writes: They weren't too scared of God to OWN SLAVES!!! WAKE-UP!

Some slave owners actually used religion to defend their practice -- just as the Southern Baptist Convention used the Bible to defend segregation. But, there was some enlightened theists in early America:

God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever

How long until someone sues the government for getting sick after fasting?

So both sides are praying? I call on the conflict of interest.

And I, for one, welcome our new religious zealot overlords, and will begin to honor them by pushing away this plate of rare roast beef so I can instead spend the day humiliating myself through the required prayers.

They weren't too scared of God to OWN SLAVES!!! WAKE-UP!

I know of nothing suggesting the Judeo-Christian god would have a problem with owning slaves. Just the opposite in fact, as while the bible contains passages regulating slavery it contains none that I recall prohibiting slavery or proclaiming it to be a really bad thing.
2003-03-27 02:11:26 PM
How do you submit an article to Fark btw??
I found one that I think would be of interest.
And another thing I was wondering.. how do you post pictures with your comment?

1.Unless you are TotalFark save you time with posting links /imo

2. There is a very good FAQ on the main page for posting images
2003-03-27 02:12:00 PM
Okay. Thanks.
2003-03-27 02:13:59 PM
I'm familiar with America's dispicable history of using religion to justify White's the point that I'm trying to make. If your morality is derived from one of the founding fathers, you are farked.

And that's not a troll compared to some of the sputum I've read here.

Daniel As Gorgor said please check the FArQ.

Specifically you submit a link by clicking the text near the top center of the main page that says "Submit a Link"

Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

Oh the Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.

Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.

There is a very thin line between theology and mythology, and eventually the former becomes the latter. Christianity is just taking a longer time than usual. Stubborn folks.

"This nation was founded on a belief in God. The Founding Fathers were god-fearing men, and this nation would be a better place if all the citizens were also."

Actually you are only partially correct. The Founding Fathers of your country were classically educated men who represented some of the best thinkers of that time period. They were children of the Age of Reason, and probably far more in tune with things then the Fundies who somehow managed to get elected to your congress.

These guys did believe in God, but they also believed in the Divinity of Man, and his ability to use science and reason for the benefit of all. These guys would not be trying to make people through law, or any sort of coersion pray for victory. I suspect that they would hold these Representative in equal contempt with Bin Ladin.

For some interesting reading on the history of the US political structure, check out Joeseph Campbell's "The Power Of Myth". He says some pretty amazing things about how the USA is structure, and it's pretty cool. Too bad these 'tards are screwin' it up in da name of Jeeeeee-zus.

"If Jesus could see all the things people were doing in his name he'd never stop throwing up." Quote from Hannah and Her Sisters

no government is going to get me to pray. and i'm a religious freak. just ask anagrammer and his shoons argument. the day church and government come together in america is the day we all have to be on the farking lookout. that's gonna be some scary shiat.
2003-03-27 02:23:41 PM
A belief in slavery and a belief in God are two totally separate issues. Abolishing slavery reinforced the declaration of independence (that ALL men are created equal) while an abolishment of God would do nothing good.

I already stated above I didn't think it was the role of the government to make this request; it should be the religious leaders doing this.

I could go off on how ridiculous it is NOT to believe in a God of some sort(read that carefully- it's quite logical not to believe in organized religion), but I'll save that for another thread.

As for nations that have been better off for a belief in God, my historical knowledge isn't that great. I'm familiar with plenty of Biblical history that would attest to that, but that is garbage evidence if you don't believe the Bible. So I guess it's more of a personal conviction.
2003-03-27 02:24:45 PM
Wow, I can't believe this thread is still going.

Apparently it is lost on the religious types that we wouldn't have these types of discussions if they kept their personal, private beliefs personal and private. It's only when they go public with how great God is, how much they worship him, and how everybody else should too that there is any resistance or debate.

Keep your worship between you and your god and don't try to do his work for him.

The reason that your God gave you free will was so that when you farked up, it was on you. So don't turn around and then beg your God for favor... no big house, no cure for cancer, no world peace. He gave you the responsibility of taking care of it on your won and dealing with the consequences. Deal with it!

Korag_The_Nasty: I KNOW that Jim Croce is dead - believe it was a car accident (I think he was driving his VW) on the Long Island Expressway. My comment was directed more to the farker that didn't know who Jim Croce was.
And yes, if I did see Jim crawling out from under a rock, I would run for the hills!

Joey Jojo etc:

Check out my previous post. Now show me how christianity (or any other religion) differs from all these myths that were "valid" beliefs at one point in time. Also, take this quote from Stephen Roberts:

"I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

Ta da.

America is responsible for all the evil in the world. In just over 200 years we've managed to be blamed for things that happend thousands of years ago. We invented War, Disease, Famine, Blight, Religion, Torture and of course Slavery.

Our founding fathers were clearly asshats up to no good. Lazy ale drinking shiatbags with no clear vision of the future. How in the hell did we get to be so powerful and why do so many millions of people want to come here?

Screw this place, I'm moving to Haiti
2003-03-27 02:29:39 PM
Minor troll here, but something that really bugs me. If you mean to talk about a generic god that has no particular religion associated, then use a lower case "g". God with an upper case "G" is the judeo-christian God and inherently implies the judeo-christian faiths.

(forgive any spelling errors, I'm very tired)
2003-03-27 02:31:25 PM
Well the Judaic god is supposed to be spelled:
G-d, according to judaic law.
2003-03-27 02:33:18 PM
<<<<so, if you didn't see them specify a God, this can refer to anyone's beliefs. well, maybe not Bhuddism... or Greek Mythology... but, still, they didn't specify what religion you have to follow>>>>

Ah, but they did specify. By using the term 'God' w/a big 'G' they are referring to the Judeo-Xian god. Providence and Heaven was mentioned as well.

Damn that Bob Aderholt!

If I remember correctly, his campaign commercials had nothing to do with issues. It showed him going to church and praying with his family around the dinner table.

Here's an excerpt from his congressional website:

Congressman Aderholt has been an outspoken leader on the issue of religious freedom and expression. During the 105th Congress, Congressman Aderholt introduced a House Resolution stating that the public display of the Ten Commandments should be permitted, including government offices and courthouses. This resolution, which passed overwhelmingly in the House, was a prelude to another piece of legislation, "The Ten Commandments Defense Act," which would empower states to decide whether the Ten Commandments may be displayed in public places.

So basically what this says is that he believes in religious freedom and expression, but only if that religion is Christian. Asshat.
2003-03-27 02:33:47 PM

Um... I don't know about every other religion. My religion teaches me to be good, to be accepting, to love other people regardless of what they believe, what color their skin is, etc, and to be humble. If you want to be atheist or agnostic or whatever, hey, that's fine with me. My beliefs- and my obedience to principles my religion teaches, have made me happy. Therefore I want others to feel that same happiness. That probably doesn't answer your question, but its kinda the best I can do.

Also, I used to live in York, SC. What part of Rock Hill are you in?

Fink writes: In just over 200 years we've managed to be blamed for things that happend thousands of years ago. We invented War, Disease, Famine, Blight, Religion, Torture and of course Slavery.

Well, the Iraqis didn't invent chemical weapons. I guess they're blameless then.
2003-03-27 02:40:24 PM
Joey I appreciate that you use your religion as guidance to be tolerant.. but I don't understand how someone needs religion to be tolerant and loving. It's not a prerequisite. My only issue is the fact that previous widely held beliefs have, in time, fallen into the category of mythology for whatever reason. As we progress as a society, it is my feeling that christianity will eventually succumb to the same fate as the religions before it. In the meantime, I do not wish to hear from people that supposedly represent me or my state that the entire population of the country should pray to a god, for ANY reason.

I live near Cherry Park, off Celanese.

We do! Believe it or not, it's possible to be supremely happy in live w/o God.
