ps: Iraq has absolutely NOTHING to do with the September 11th attacks. It would make much more sense to be scared of Saudi Arabians, since that is where the majority of the Sept 11th attackers came from.
And Iran is much more fundamentalist than Iraq too. Iraq is generally a rather secular country as Muslim countries go.

2003-03-27 12:48:56 PM
BlindHampster: Iraq is one of the most SECULAR countries over there. There were NO IRAQIS on the 9-11 planes. Unless we invade saudi arabia, your arguement makes NO SENSE...

Alright, first of all, I wouldn't participate in this because I am not a God fearing man, and nourishment is good. However, most of you Liberal bastards didn't even see what it said. These guys called for this day with the history in mind, and they even included the dates. They remembered the "pray and fasting" days during times such as Civil war and the Revolutionary War.

Also, if you didn't see them specify a God, this can refer to anyone's beliefs. well, maybe not Bhuddism... or Greek Mythology... but, still, they didn't specify what religion you have to follow. And, this day isn't law, it is a suggesttion. So don't go all crazy for no reason.

What happens if Iraq also fasts and prays?

It's first come, first served.
Let's git to praying, people!

". We are in Iraq at this moment because a large group of fundamentalist is threatening our very existence"

That statement is overtly ludicrous, wrong on every front.

We are not in danger of our existence. At all.
Iraq is a relatively secular nation.
Until, that is, Saddam (ever the opportunist) decides to go on TV and make it about Islam.
Which, of course, he did because we're bombing him.

Listen, I'm pro-invasion from a human rights standpoint. But your rationale... well, isn't.

Enjoy your dying thread...

I'm off to watch the Deer Hunter for (gasp)--the first time.

2003-03-27 12:50:50 PM
Does it not mean anything to you that the people most effected by the events of Sept. 11th are the ones protesting the actions in Iraq the loudest?

Were they heros then and fools now?

What will it take before you listen to the voice of the people and ignore the voice of the government?

2003-03-27 12:50:54 PM
But, there is NO god......

2003-03-27 12:51:22 PM
This is just sad.
As sad as watching war reports with nu-metal playin in the background...
Did I say sad?
I meant farkin stupid.

2003-03-27 12:51:24 PM
I don't know if any has already mentioned this (if so sorry). But, if I fast then I wouldn't be supporting the U.S. agricultural industry. I just don't see that putting farmers off of their land so that God can help us kill better is all that great of an idea (obvioulsy over the top).

"Why are you people not as outraged by the fundamental Islamic that wished you dead?"

Who's to say some aren''t? I watched a fascinating special on the Discovery Channel last night done by Thomas Freidman "Searching for the Roots of 9/11". I recommend that everyone try to see it.

What's at issue here I suspect, is that it's within our power as citizens to change this, whereas only as a governmental, cultural, and military force can we change the rivers of rage (sorry Mr. Freidman) that feed the Islamic fundies.

Plus, this is Fark.

"Which way are you going?
Which side are you on?
Will you stand and watch while
all the seeds of hate are sewn?
Will you stand with those who say
That His will be done
One hand on the bible
and one hand on their gun.

Which way are you looking?
Is it hard to see
That you say what's wrong for him
is not wrong for me.
You walk the streets of righteousness
but you refuse to understand
You say you love the baby
Then you crucify the man."

- Jim Croce

This is just more of the same dumb ass crap that congress seems to be preoccupied with lately. Aren't there reall bills to be passed, aren't there potholes to fill and real things to do? Its no wonder that nobody actually knows what in the budget or has time to even study it because they spend all their time doing this shiat. GET TO WORK! GET SOMETHING ACCOMPLISHED! QUIT FARKING AROUND!

First.... Maddogjew...that's pretty funny.

Second... American doods. It's time to stand against this rather then just whining on the internet. Somebody posted the names of the reps. Please... write them and tell them what you think. We are witnessing the start of the American Taliban. This is a gross exageration, but seriously... wanting to designate a day where people basically have to stop what they are doing to pray for victory? That is nuts. I'd do it, but hey... I'm Canadian, and nobody listens to us anyways.

I'll pray when I damn well feel like it, I don't need the government to hold my hand and tell me to belive that some entity is going to listen to my whims. Arg, this makes me so angry. I'm goona go get drunk. Wait, its only 10am. I swear when I get home I'm going to get drunk!

On Divine Plan and prayer.

I don't pray to God to change His will, (the Divine Plan as it were). I pray for wisdom, understanding and courage to except His will in my life.

I pray that whatever times I experience, good and bad that I can handle them with grace and thank God that I am blessed with either good things or bad things so I may know Him better.

God is not a big giant Cosmic ATM machine dispensing wishes and 20 dollar bills to people who think that material "things" (which are temporal and will erode/fade/rot) will make them happy. If He were such a being, then people would didn't worship God would be foolish, and people who did worship God would only worship Him for what they could get. Not for who He is. Worship God for who He is, not what you can get. Don't try to change God's will, ask for His help to deal with it. You might find yourself in service to your fellow human being in ways you never imagined.

I must be getting old.
Someone posted some Mattheew Sweet lyrics up in the thread and now that Batman and Robic pic reminds me; Matthew Sweet also wrote a song called "Holy War"

You have your opinion, I have mine. My intention is not to change your mind. I only wish to point out that this is not about the trivialities that are always discussed here. The issue is very fundamental. We (I) do not want to be afraid to get on an airplane, train, bus, ship, scooter or whatever. I do not want to be afraid when I sit with my wife at a cafe, looking for exits or wondering what is in that guy's backpack.
You seem comfortable with the current situation. I am not. These groups have violated my country and my way of life.
For those who say, "Iraq is not responsible...Saudi Arabia..." your correct. We will eventually control the entire region. By whatever means. I hope that after this initial military action, things can be controlled in a less dramatic political fashion.

Hey - here's another one:

-------------------

"Little Kings" by Aussie rock god Paul Kelly

I'm so afraid for my country
There's an ill wind blowing no good
So many lies in the name of history
They want to improve my neighbourhood

I'm so worried about my brother
He just gets sadder every day
We gotta take care of each other
Or else we're gonna have to pay

In the land of the little kings
There's a price on everything
And everywhere the little kings
Are getting away with murder

I was born in a lucky country
Every day I hear the warning bells
They're so busy building palaces
They don't see the poison in the wells

In the land of the little kings
Profit is the only thing
And everywhere the little kings
Are getting away with murder

In the land of the little kings
Justice don't mean a thing
And everywhere the little kings
Are getting away with murder

This administration has shown time and time again that they do not understand a separation of church and state.

It is time for them to be replaced by people who can actually lead our country in a responsible and un-biased fashion rather than making it the laughing stock of the world.

Bush: "hey! they waged holy war on us! Let's wage holy war right back at 'em! My daddy taught me so!!"

Okay, to all of the people out there telling us non-believer to just relax and ignore it, I know you're having a hard time understanding where we are coming from on this one. Imagine your reaction if congress tried to pass a resolution that all people in America NOT participate in any religious activity at all for one day. That's how this feels to us.

2003-03-27 01:13:42 PM
Bush says "god bless america"
Bin Laden (remember him?) says "allah be praised"

CAN WE JUST DROP THE WHOLE GOD THING?

Every side of every war in history has invoked god to justify and validate their actions and protect their troops. Funny how god only seems to bless those with the better weapons, bigger economy, or better close air support.

I really wish Dubya would quit invoking GOD; it just makes this look like the religious war that the Islamic Zealots are trying to sell it as. He's feeding the fire. How can the US say "this war is not about against islam" when the muslims around the world hear the president say "God bless our troops to victory".

Does anyone think about how that must sound when translated into languages where those types of slogans are much MUCH more meaningful than in the metaphorical sense that we in the US understand it? It sounds like a farking holy war to them.

UNITED WE STAND is a much better slogan on a symbolic and historical level.

What is going on over there in the States? Is your whole government going nuts?

Going?

Nope. It's been nuts for a very long time.

America is a nutty place. Don't get me wrong, I love it here, but I do keep in mind Mark Twain's statement, "Love your country unconditionally. Love your government only when it deserves it."
