Forget all that, did you see (at the bottom) where Lara Croft is gonna advertise for Jeep? Blasphemy!
2003-03-25 04:37:26 PM
that link again. My HTML skills are almost as good as the last jeep I owned.
2003-03-25 04:47:14 PM
i want a tivo, but refuse to release my privacy for things like this.
2003-03-25 04:53:09 PM
Aren't there alternatives? (i.e. things that act like a TIVO but aren't)?

And do they collect personal information (name, address) or just viewing habits (what channel you are watching), or does it matter?

I have but a lowly VCR, and a cheap one at that.
2003-03-25 04:57:17 PM
Screw my privacy, I love my Tivo.

I couldn't watch TV without it.
2003-03-25 05:02:04 PM
Does anyone else find it distrubing that TiVO knows things like that? Yeesh.

Numberz: There used to be ReplayTV, which didn't transmit your viewing habits, but SonicBlue (the company that makes it) just went under. I'm fairly certain that TiVO shares their viewing statistics with Neilsen and anyone else willing to pay for them.

I want to know the mean and median times of the pause. After all I want to know how long those poor kittens suffered.
2003-03-25 05:38:14 PM
I think they 'paused' her because she walks like one of those Teamsters Steve Martin was talking about.

'Course, I might not mind getting my pause on her...
2003-03-25 07:29:33 PM
Jeebus, Am I the only one that thought Jennifer Garner was leaps and bounds better looking than every other woman at that awards show? Sexy, and has a really good physique.
She makes Julia Roberts look like a dog,
2003-03-25 07:47:15 PM
It's not right that Tivo spies on you like that.

If the company that purchased the ReplayTV section of SonicBlue keeps producing the ReplayTV, I think I may pick one up.

Screw being spied on.
2003-03-25 08:24:56 PM
TiVo also reported that viewership dropped off heavily during commercials in the Oscars show, but speculated that this was because viewers were using commercial breaks to tune into other sources of news programming to follow the dramatic events of the war in Iraq.

That, or the reason they bought a friggin TiVO was to eliminate commertials.

2003-03-25 08:30:21 PM

I have Dish Network, and it comes with its own PVR.... it works like a charm...

But I really couldn't give a rat's arse if they take a look at my viewing habits.... I pretty much tape Simpsons and Sienfeld for 3.5 hours worth a day.

God bless America. God bless my satellite dish.
2003-03-25 09:13:55 PM
Ahh, the joys of TiVO. No wonder nerds all over the world want their privacy, the stupid dorks don't want to admit they're mainstream.

It's ok, I think the same thing too when I see that x-large mouth.
2003-03-25 10:20:30 PM
so they can track that? Then they know about all those excercise shows I watch on Sunday..

And the showtime late night stuff...

uh oh.
2003-03-26 12:09:41 AM
call me crazy, i think Julia Roberts is one ugly dog. And SuburbanCowboy, I thought Mira Sorvino looked pretty hot that night.
2003-03-26 12:10:24 AM

What a freaking joke.

They know what you pause? That's almost as stupid as paying a "monthly fee"

That's like renting your video card and drivers.

AverTV Studio. Better than TiVO. Better quality. And the monthy fee is ZERO. Titantv.com gives it to you free, and I have a wonderful remote that came with the setup.

Orwell would have loved TiVO. That's lame.
2003-03-26 12:13:24 AM
dammit fark ate my long post

anyway.. all info gathering is opt-in only and you can opt-out at any time. even if tivo did gather info its on anonymous basis only and cant be tied back to one individual unit. WWW.tivocommunity.com is a great forum for tivo users and the developers post there too
2003-03-26 12:15:27 AM
ive had my tivo for 2 years now.. upgraded w/ w 120gb drives in it and ive never had problems w/ its privacy policy (see above post).. go add some more tin foil to your hat

Exactly what I was thinking!

Tivo is your god, worship Tivo.

That is all.

IrockalotYes,indeed. Her and Susan Sarandon. Meee-ooww.

holy shiat! I had no idea Tivo takes that kind of statistic info from our boxes. WHAT THE FARK!?!
2003-03-26 12:18:36 AM
Irockalot.. you're crazy
2003-03-26 12:19:36 AM
As far am I'm concerned, all of American can know that I think Julia Roberts is hot.
I actually saw her in real life 'cause she was filming in my town.
She's radiant.
No, seriously. She has an aura that none of the other movie stars I've seen has. It was unexplainable.

Hello, my name is Peter Hook, and Im here to learn how to control my anger over trivial matters.
group: Hello, Peter!

It seems to me Irockalot is the one obsessed with Maggie Gyllenhaal. I ain't a huge fan of the way Julia Roberts looks, but I'd take her over Ms. Gyllenhaal any day.

A good PVR:

Hauppauge WinTV PVR

Better and cheaper:

Instead of paying a monthly fee, you get your guide free from:

All you need is a P3 class computer, and you're good to go.

$300 for a TiVO and $300 for a "Lifetime service contract" is $600.

You can get a P3 with AverTV Studio Pro, a cheap video card that can run to your TV, plus a BURNER to make VCD's for $600.

And with a computer, you can add all the hard drive space you want as time goes on. And no one knows what you watch except you.
2003-03-26 12:24:12 AM
HAHA ! Tivo knows you watch Spice Channel for ten minutes a day, and pause it for five of those minutes ! Pervs !

Yeah, she's in good shape. And pretty, in an androgynous kind of way.
2003-03-26 12:24:48 AM
sigh.. stupid html screwup.... here

Basically the data is collected anonymously and used in aggregate form. For example, they know how many people watched a Super Bowl commercial, but there's no link in their data to tell them who. You can opt out of even this if you want to.

TiVo does collect detailed data from certain individuals (similar to Nielsen) but you have to sign an agreement to be a part of this program.

Members here have monitored TiVo's anonymous data collection and verified that they are doing exactly as they say
2003-03-26 12:26:19 AM
Did anyone else notice that Tatum O'Neal is hot? She has to be, well, older than she was once was.
2003-03-26 12:26:30 AM
People still watch the Oscars? While there are always some funny moments, it's not worth sitting through 4 hours of listening to Hollywood celebrities call the trash they make art.

Anyway, it's exactly for this reason that I won't get TIVO. I have nothing to hide (about all I watch on TV is The Sopranos, Law & Order, Simpsons and the occasional HBO movie of the night), but I think it's highly unethical that they reveal people's viewing habits. At the very least TIVO owners should get some kind of small check whenever TIVO prints one of these "studies".
2003-03-26 12:26:57 AM

Privacy is not a trivial matter. And paying $12.95 a month for the privilege of having your viewing habits harvested for their profit is outrageous.

I don't trust what these people do with my information. The same "auspices" are what and why you get targeted with specific spam in your mailbox all the time. They could sell this info to telemarketers. Put you on lists you could never get off of. Who knows? Can you believe them? Trust them?

If you're NOT pissed, you're not thinking.
2003-03-26 12:28:49 AM
You can opt out of TiVo collecting viewing information.
They have a pretty strict policy about that. It's really a "Good thing"--Nelson ratings anyone? I like the idea that the shows count to the network; everyone biatches about good shows being canceled. TiVo only collects info without personal info (name-location..etc), I opted out of that way back, but I'm considering opting back in; I'd like the networks to know people actualy watch their shows.
2003-03-26 12:29:06 AM
Ah, Gelatinous has been paying attention to my posts. For the record i also believe Charlize Theron, Alyson Hannigan and Chloe Sevigny to be tops. Maybe i'm weird.

Oh, and I still think Julia Roberts is a horse.
2003-03-26 12:30:01 AM
Oh, google search for "Freevo" for open source PVRs.

You're weird, but at least you're not claiming that Kirsten Dunst is a goddess; doing so not only requires no imagination whatsoever, it's flat out incorrect. So, points for being creative.

Like someone cares if I give them "points".
2003-03-26 12:34:54 AM

I would like to add that Freevo works with both capture boards I mentioned.

Bravo. Hopefully people who don't want extra junk mail targeted to them because they are TiVO subscribers will consider that alternative as well.

I have a acccount that is dedicated to my tivo.. i have yet to receive ONE spam from tivo or any of its marketing partners.
2003-03-26 12:37:07 AM
Julia Roberts is old and busted. And not attractive.
2003-03-26 12:39:42 AM
My TV took a shiat. Rather than buy another I bought a TV card and dropped it into my server. (Pretty much just sits idling anyway.) JEEZ talk about freaking over all the cool features. Record ahead, straight record to MPEG, FM tuner, video in (for cameras), remote control that I can use to run my system like a wireless mouse, besides controlling all the other features. All this for $49.25 US. I will never buy another frigging TV or VCR in my life. It didn't even make any kind of noticeable difference in the performance of the computer. I'm currently using a 17" monitor but hey, I was going to buy a bigger one anyway.
2003-03-26 12:40:17 AM
man privacy crazies are nuts. I wouldn't want to cobble up a tivo. I just want to buy something and have it work. I love my old pos tivo and i dont mind paying the fee. If I REALLY didn't want tivo to know stuff about my viewing habits, i'd just opt out. It's not like they can see me having sex or know about my plotting to kill all the spotted owls to take the hippies attention away from the war.

2003-03-26 12:43:14 AM
If you pay for satellite or cable service, chances are they know what you are watching.

Chances are also that they really don't care.
2003-03-26 12:45:29 AM
You just keep thinking that. Is that sand all comfy around your head like that?
2003-03-26 12:46:43 AM
Another good card is a new one from LeadTek. I sell computer shiat, so I get to stay on the forefront of the new stuff. Needless to say (if you're a hopeless geek like myself) you get a little jittery at the name LeadTek, but they are working hand in hand with NVidia's development crew, and those cards are crazy cheap and come with some really nice PVR software.
2003-03-26 12:55:34 AM
I have a account that is dedicated to my tivo.. i have yet to receive ONE spam from tivo or any of its marketing partners.

Same here. I actualy *like* that I'm a Nelson family now.
That what I watch actualy counts to hollywood. TiVo isn't my only viewing source--I don't want it to be.

TiVo is a heck of a lot more upfront about their privacy policy than, say, Microsoft, gasp, real player.

The "Home Media" option for TiVo is pretty sweet, it lets you listen to MP3 streamed from your PC, view pictures and pump recorded programs to another TiVo in your house.

Speaking of which---http://www.broadq.com/qcasttuner/
is a software package that works with the Playstation2 that lets you listen to your MP3s stored on your PC, and (something the TiVO homemedia doesn't do) lets you view Mpeg video,Divx, and VCDs stored on the computer on your TV via the Sony Broadband adapter.
