haha. hope there were some PETA members there
2003-03-11 10:14:01 PM
I bet the lions think they're yummy.
2003-03-11 10:15:11 PM
Love them little horsies
Horsies what I love to eat
Bite they little heads off
Nibble on they tiny feet
2003-03-11 10:16:03 PM
Tastes like chicken
2003-03-11 10:16:08 PM

"It's not as good as the zebra mommy used to bring me when I was cub."
2003-03-11 10:17:27 PM
Holy shiat sums it up, I think.

But really, what do you expect? THey are LIONS. They EAT THINGS. I would have thanked them for showing that.
2003-03-11 10:18:58 PM
Ohhh those wacky zookeepers. They love to put on a show for the kiddies.
2003-03-11 10:19:35 PM

This wouldnt offend PETA members. Lions are animals, and its cool if they kill and eat other animals. As compared to humans, which are.... ummmm.... oh, nevermind.

2003-03-11 10:20:47 PM
Shait, they should feed them people. ummmmmm politicians?
2003-03-11 10:22:09 PM
First Wellington Zoo feeds man to the tigerss, now Auckland Zoo pulls a stunt like this... cool, if you can't go on safari then why not bring the safari to you, but is it really woth an obvious tag?

Kiwi S.O.B

Note: I know the man was not feed to the tiger, so don't bother trying to point that out to me, it's called poetic licensing
2003-03-11 10:23:34 PM
Check out the caption under the lion's picture: I could eat a horse. Seriously.
2003-03-11 10:24:17 PM
Obvious? What the bloody hell is this!? When I go to see animals, I want to see as much of their behavior as possible. Why the hell should I be denied such an interesting sight merely because some city slickers are sqeamish.

Don't farking look at it if you find it repulsive, some of us find it interesting.
2003-03-11 10:24:51 PM
I'd much rather see that than have to watch the chimps whacking off again.
2003-03-11 10:27:40 PM
Finicky felines choose equines

and I ain't lion!
2003-03-11 10:28:48 PM
I would actually go to the zoo if I knew I could see that.
2003-03-11 10:29:45 PM
Why is this even posted? no one was offended. It was a "talking point." Gee, great news.

I worked at a zoo this summer, carcasses are fed regularly to all kinds of animals after hours. I just don't see the point of this article.
2003-03-11 10:31:32 PM
Dwbean1: nice!

Anyway, for some reason this reminds me of that scene from (i)Jurassic Park where they feed the live goat to the tyrannosaurus, and the veggy girl starts shiatting a brick... hahah! Hilarity all around in that movie (too bad the next few sucked).
2003-03-11 10:32:50 PM
mmmm.. horse heads.
2003-03-11 10:33:25 PM
Most people, Nonvideas, have never seen the corpse of a large animal, before. Meat comes on styrene trays wrapped in poly, in their world.
2003-03-11 10:35:25 PM
mmmmm.... processed animal flesh on styrene trays wrapped in poly *slobbers*
2003-03-11 10:36:25 PM
Horse heads, horse heads
Roly-poly horse heads
Horse heads, horse heads
Eat them up
2003-03-11 10:38:01 PM
I would have liked to see it.
2003-03-11 10:38:17 PM
Please refrain from feeding whole horse heads to lions while public is present

Screw that. Tell me when you're gonna feed them; that's gotta be on hell of a show.
2003-03-11 10:38:41 PM
man: "so little girl, you like the horsies? well, the black horsies and the white horsies are my favorites...the brown ones are ok, but still, I like the white and black ones best...which ones do you like the best?"

little girl: "I don't think my pet lion gives a shiat what color the friggin horsies are, just cut off the heads and throw em' in the pit, dammit!"

/I'm on the Highway to Hell

What's the big deal? Sounds like a typical NIN video to me.
2003-03-11 10:40:51 PM
"It's interesting that society would prefer to see lions eating a slab of meat, rather than something they would normally kill and eat."

Interesting? This is the same society in which over 90% of it's members haven't seen the process of getting food from the hoof to the dinner plate. More like obvious.
2003-03-11 10:49:04 PM
Horse heads, horse heads,
Rolly polly horse heads;
Horse heads, horse heads,
Eat 'em up, yum.
2003-03-11 10:49:04 PM
well at least they didn't put a live horse in there to let the lions kill then tear apart. Though it probably would have been more realistic for the lions.

So'd they butcher a horse for parts to feed to the lions? Send off to the local butcher who carries horse heads? Or do they take the heads and hooves off all horses sent to the glue factory to send off to zoos?
2003-03-11 10:55:42 PM
Reality check for zoo goers... WTF do you think you would see on safari to the Serengeti Plains... lions eating out of Purina Lion Chow bags?
2003-03-11 10:56:22 PM
Skinink, dammit, that made me laugh too hard.
2003-03-11 10:57:40 PM

Actually, they prob. got them from rendering plants.

some wild carnivores also stash food for later and eat rotting meat. are they feeding that in the zoos too? hell they should have excercise and most of them excercise while hunting for food. that is whats normal for lions. they are defending themselves saying they feed what carnivores eat in the wild. they really aren't recreating feeding conditions in the wild at all. if they were doing that they wouldn't be feeding horse's heads, they'd be feeding zebra, gazelle, anything thats native prey for them. heads and hoofs are the last thing to be eaten on a carcass. sounds to me like they're disposing of livestock carcasses the cheap way. which may be the only viable feeding option. just don't tell me it's a natural diet for them.
2003-03-11 11:00:27 PM
I was at the Memphis Zoo once with my former girlfriend and her family. We got to watch a bunch of bunnies being fed to kimono dragons. Fun 'n fierce!
2003-03-11 11:03:19 PM
Got head?
2003-03-11 11:10:37 PM
Right, next time, just feed them whole, live horses. or better yet, just combine the zebra and lion exibits, and let nature take it course.
2003-03-11 11:10:42 PM
I'm so hungry I can ride a horse.

Wait I don't get it.

Well, I guess I can ride it to the store to get food.

/Family guy.
2003-03-11 11:11:05 PM
Yeah! Feed them live horses! Preferably with French people riding them! Yeah! Yeah!

2003-03-11 11:12:04 PM
I'd pay a dollar to see that. What else would you go to a Zoo for, apart from watching monkies throw their shiat at people. Most of the animals look sedated and miserable.
2003-03-11 11:14:41 PM
Better than waking up & finding one of 'em in your bed.
2003-03-11 11:16:05 PM
Kinda reminds me of the time at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago when the zookeepers fed whole baby chicks to the bald eagle...during operating hours in the children's zoo. It seemed a bit strange that 3-year-olds got to see the eagles swoop in and tear the head off something cute and fuzzy.
2003-03-11 11:20:08 PM
Note to self: Remember to ask the zookeeper if you can see when they feed lions with the real stuff.
2003-03-11 11:27:55 PM
i'm not necessarily saying feed live horses or animals. just that what they're doing still isn't a natural, normal diet. feeding certain scraps, isn't even close. lions eat from the whole carcass. zookeepers could even drag a carcass behind a vehicle and let the lions chase it and jump on it. that would be more in line with a normal diet.
2003-03-11 11:30:17 PM
"To be honest, no one really cared. It was just like seeing them in the wild."

Sure. It's just like in the wild, where horse heads simply fall from the sky before hungry lions.

Definitely one hell of a show, in any case.
2003-03-11 11:35:41 PM
Rdvdolson: The Memphis Zoo herp house likes to feed the assorted reptiles while people are around. It seems like every time I went there I got see something get eaten.

The last time I went to the zoo before I moved away from Memphis, my parents were in town. My step dad (jokingly) threatened to throw my little brother into the komodo dragon display so they could eat him. My mom didn't think it was too funny.
2003-03-11 11:46:10 PM
Kinda reminds me of a zoo experience from a loong time ago. I went to the zoo with my aunt and her family, and my younger cousin decided he wanted a closer look at the gators. He then proceeds to stick his head between the bars, and got his head nice and stuck. He started screaming and crying, and come to think of it, I laughed..Lord I was mean when I was little..
2003-03-11 11:48:53 PM
Avixxen2: They feed them the horse heads and hooves because the lions would become nutrient deficient on a meat only diet. They need the bones and other assorted parts to stay healthy.
2003-03-11 11:49:12 PM
The lions are probably captive born, so its questionable if they would know what to do with a dragged carcass.

The horse's head probably contains little in the way of nutrients, it's just provided as enrichment. Something for the lions to pick at and keep busy with.

This thread reminds me of a story I heard about a rabbit hopping into the outdoor gorilla exhibit at the bronx zoo. One of the male gorillas walked over to it, picked it up, and bit its head off. In front of a large group of children.
2003-03-11 11:52:16 PM
What did the kids do when they saw that happen?
