WHAT is funniest about that article----all the fat Americans standing on that beach all pissed off. YA KNOW if the Swine Flu did not say "stay the fark away" I don't know what to tell ya. Most resorts dredge for sand. A lot of public beaches resand at night. So one hotel could afford to dredge for sand and so they had sand and the navy closed it down.. I don't know whether to be amused, disgusted,or just confused.

Has anyone stopped to think for a moment that maybe they were searching for Shai Ha'lud?

HawgWild: Oh, yes. The Sand Thieves come in the middle of the night. Steal you're sand, they do.

Ran for a few days with an ex-mercenary turned sand pirate on Grand Cayman. He could suck a lot dry and have the sand to his customer on the other side of town in less than two hours. Always in the middle of the night. One of the craziest farks I've ever met.

This text is now purple: MessyDwarf: Great, another thing Arabs have cornered the market on.

Ironically, Arabian sand is pretty worthless.

Really? Why is that?

duuuude... you must be young. "Ice Pirates" one of the great, unloved space comedies, possibly better than "Spaceballs".

thespindrifter: possibly better than "Spaceballs"

Pishaw, not possibly, I am pretty sure it is FACT!

Yet, having watched it last year, it was much more ammusing as a kid.

I'm getting a kick out of this because I've lived in Cancun since 1983. I am so happy to see these assworms nailed for a change. Too bad the owners won't go to prison. That's what they deserve.

This is a really serious issue. Cancun is a business. It's main product is the beach. Unfortunately, there is no beach because greedy creeps paid off corrupt officials and overbuilt, situating many of the hotels on the vegetated dunes that kept the sand in place. Hurricanes than proceeded to strip the remaining sand away. The government invested $20 million in a beach restoration plan in which a Dutch form moved sand hydraulically from off shore areas. Then Hurricane Wilma removed that.

They then put a great deal of planning and effort into studying the best way to restore the beach and keep it there this time. Meanwhile, all hotels were forbidden from improvising their own solutions, such as jetties, because they make the situation worse, and will have to be removed anyway when the new beaches are installed. Some total jerks with an unsavory previous history amounting to ecocide ignored the rules and went ahead with ugly fortifications and outright theft of sand.

The people who are ridiculing this are ignorant morons. People in Cancun are cheering. This is the best news we've had in a long time. Drugs aren't a problem. Seeing your source of employment in one of Mexico's best places to live and work disappear is a BIG problem. I could care less about drug wars and so could almost everyone else here. That beach has been feeding, housing and clothing several hundred thousand Cancun residents. Stealing it is a worse crime than stealing power cables and selling them for scrap. That's just an inconvenience. This is survival.
