Tim Russert just noted that all the planes were heading for CA. Makes sense, they had a full load of fuel. Maximum power for the "bombs." What has this world come to??? I'm going to cry.
2001-09-11 1:48:45 PM
'Carrier Groups' are being deployed to New York according to CNN.
2001-09-11 1:50:37 PM
What are "carrier" groups?
2001-09-11 1:52:39 PM
Well, if it's 'Carrier Group' in the Navy sense, it's a carrier battle group. At least one carrier, several missle cruisers, several supply frigates, several destroyers, etc. Carriers never travel alone.
2001-09-11 1:52:42 PM
Aircraft carriers and their associated ships, such as destroyers and supply boats. They always travel in large task force groups.
2001-09-11 1:53:18 PM
Carrier Battle Group, an aircrfat carrier, a few drstroyers, cruiser & frigates and support ships...Probably send a couple hospital ships too I would imagine.

Note, I have not heard this report myself.
2001-09-11 1:53:24 PM

That should be a 'carrier group' according to the CNN europe ticker. Nothing about what it comprises, though.
BTW, Henry Kissenger is live on the telephone right now.
2001-09-11 1:56:28 PM
MDH...two previous news posts stated that all commercial flights have been accounted for... said it was on CNN, another post said that it was from KTLA news (somewhere in California)
2001-09-11 1:56:55 PM
I think it was Fox News: Two carrier battlegroups left Norfolk headed north. One probably headed for New York, the other probably headed for Chesepeak (sp?) Bay near Washington.

As far as the military aspect, we're all on Threatcon Delta. Basically, you can't get on base without 46 forms of ID, and a cavity search. As far as moblizing to attack, well, we need a target first. But even then, the AF has AEF 8 already deployed, so I doubt many soldiers stationed here will get shipped out.
2001-09-11 2:24:21 PM
Regional ND news: There's a bomb reported on a plane at Grand Forks Air Force Base. The plane was diverted there en route to Minneapolis, and a middle-eastern man has been arrested.

World shock over U.S. attacks
September 11, 2001 Posted: 2:16 PM EDT (1816 GMT)

LONDON, England -- World leaders reacted with revulsion as news spread of the aircraft attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and on the Pentagon in Washington.

A sombre and visibly shaken British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the world's democracies must "fight this evil" perpetrated by suspected terrorists in the U.S..

Blair, who cancelled a speech he was due to make to union leaders in Brighton, southern England, added these sort of attacks were "perpetrated by fanatics, utterly indifferent to the sanctity of human life."

"This mass terrorism is the new evil in our world today. It is perpetrated by fanatics who are utterly indifferent to the sanctity of life," he said.

In France, armed troops have been deployed at airports and metro stations. Border controls have increased. French President Jacques Chirac called the attacks "monstrous."

The U.S. Embassy in Paris is closed and will be shut again on Wednesday. The embassy is warning Americans in France to be careful about speaking English on the streets.

In Moscow, President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to U.S. President George W. Bush. "Dear George," he wrote, "such an inhuman act must not go unpunished."

Chinese President Jiang Zemin also sent a message to Bush expressing sympathy over the deadly attacks, Xinhua news agency was reported by Reuters as saying.

In Islamabad, Pakistan, Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, said: "We want to tell the American children that Afghanistan feels your pain and we hope that the courts find justice."

In Kabul, Afghanistan, Wakeel Ahmed Mutawakel, the foreign minister of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban government, told the Arab television network Al Jazeera, "We denounce this terrorist attack, whoever is behind it" and reiterated its position at a press conference on Tuesday.

U.S. officials said their "working assumption" is that the attacks in New York and Washington are acts of "overseas terrorism" and said they cannot rule out additional attacks. The officials said they had no intelligence beforehand that a massive terrorist plot was under way.

There have been a number of denials of responsibility by Palestinian groups and by the Al Quaida group headed by fugitive Saudi and accused terrorist Osama bin Laden. U.S. officials say they have received no credible claim of responsibility.

The Taliban, the movement that rules Afghanistan, have long angered the United States for giving sanctuary to bin Laden.

Afghanistan's Foreign Minister, Wakeel Ahmed Mutawakkel, said the Afghan government is investigating to "determine what really happened."

"We in Afghanistan do not allow Osama bin Laden to use Afghan territory to launch any attack against any government around the world. We took away all communications devices from him, and he is not in touch with anybody outside of Afghanistan," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat expressed their condolences for the attack. Reaction from other Palestinian sources has been harsh.

Sheikh Yassin, leader of the Islamic militant group Hamas, said "no doubt this is a result of injustice the U.S practises against the weak in the world. The U.S has been sowing the seed of injustice and racial discrimination against the weak, and therefore the U.S is collecting now the harvest of what it did."

Yassin stressed that he was against targeting civilians and attacking innocent people. "But we say the United States has to review its calculations and stands towards peoples of the world. So it does not become a target for what these peoples are facing, be it suppression and injustice.

"The U.S today is the strongest power in the world and it finds itself today facing weakly a humanity that is seeking revenge for suffering for long from the U.S oppression.

"I think the U.S has caused corruption in lots of places in the world, causing lots of people to hate the U.S. Its policy is that of discrimination. The whole world today is suffering of oppression at the hands of the U.S. whose fingers reach every place in the world causing death murder and sabotage."

From Gaza, Islamic Jihad official Nafez Azzam said "what happened in the United States today is a consequence of American policies in this region."

He added, "We are against the killing of innocent people."

In the West Bank, Qais abu Leila, leader of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, denied any connection to the incident and said it has always opposed "terror attacks on civilian targets, especially outside the occupied territories."

"We deny our responsibility, and we call on the U.S. administration to review their attitudes and policies towards the Palestinian question because this policy arouses the hatred and anger of Arab and Islamic peoples and urges them to harm U.S. interests in our region."

More reaction
EU External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten told Reuters."This is an act of war by madmen."

He compared the attack with that deployed by the Japanese at the U.S. naval base Pearl Harbor in 1941.

"It is the worst attack on the United States since Pearl Harbor," he added.

"This is one of those few days in life that one can actually say will change everything."

NATO Secretary-General George Robertson called it an "intolerable aggression against democracy," Reuters reported.

Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit was reported by Reuters as saying: "The United States of America is face to face with one of the greatest tragedies in its history, something that could affect the entire world,"

Pakistan military ruler General Pervez Musharraf said in a statement: "The world must unite to fight against terrorism in all its forms and root out this modern day evil."

Flags half-mast in Italy
The Italian and EU flags flew at half-mast at the office of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who said Italy joined the U.S. in condemning "these monstrous criminals who have demonstrated a vile and brutal affront against humanity," The Associated Press said.

French President Jacques Chirac, in a live televised address, condemned the attacks as "monstrous" and expressed his solidarity with the American people, AP reported.

"France has just learned of these monstrous attacks -- there is no other word for it -- that have hit America," Chirac said from Rennes, in the western region of Brittany.

Prime Minister Lionel Jospin talked of his "sadness and horror," before calling a security crisis meeting.

Israeli Defence Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer told Israel's Army Radio it was "simply a tragedy," Reuters reported.

"All I can say is I sympathise with the American people. We don't have any more details than what has been reported on CNN. It's simply a terrible thing."

Guy Verhofstadt, the prime minister of Belgium, which currently holds the chair of the EU, expressed "deep shock and dismay" on hearing of the attacks.

"On behalf of the European Union, [Verhofstadt and foreign minister Louis Michel] condemn in the strongest possible terms this type of cowardly attack on innocent civilians."

European Union foreign ministers will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to consider their response to the attacks.

A spokesman for the German foreign ministry said: "The foreign minister is dismayed and shocked by the reports from New York."

Pope John Paul II sent a telegram, which said: "I hurry to express to you and your fellow citizens my profound sorrow and my closeness in prayer for the nation at this dark and tragic moment."

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II also sent a message of condolence to U.S. President George W. Bush expressing her "disbelief and total shock."

New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark described the attacks as a horror story.

"It's the sort of thing the worst movie scenario wouldn't dream up," Clark told Reuters by telephone from Hong Kong.

"It's obviously a very sophisticated terrorist attack to get all that co-ordinated."

Japan ordered its military to tighten security for the huge U.S. bases scattered across the country and U.S. Marines went on maximum alert.

"This incident in the United States is extremely cowardly and is beyond what any words can describe," Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi was reported by Reuters as saying.

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian expressed his condolences in a telegram to Bush, the office of the president said, as did the Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, Reuters said.

They've been showing footage of people dancing in the streets in the Middle East. "God is alive" they are shouting. I'll kill them myself. Forget that the killed were American. They were people. Human beings.

Congress is planning on meeting tomorow to writ eup a Declaration of War.

The only question is, who are we supposed to be declaring war against. We have no diffinitive enemy in this. It would seem to be a very arab flavored attack though, but who the hell do we drop our Tomohawks on? Maybe it is Isam ben Laden, but we are not sure where the fark in Afghanistan he is... maybe we should just nuke Afghanistan till it is a plate of glowing glass.
2001-09-11 2:46:38 PM
FoxNews was reporting that the crash in Philadelphia WAS the one intended for Camp David.
2001-09-11 2:48:45 PM
Well... whatever is going on, there are regular normal people who know about it before the news. My friend is a volunteer firefighter... we're about 100 miles N. of Pittsburgh and her station was on full alert. She called about 10 minutes before that plane crashed to let me know that there was a hijacked plane in our area. Then it came on the news that it crashed. I feel sick for feeling relieved, but I am. My dad is in the reserves. He was head of all fuel operations in Bosnia. We have discussed the whole religious war thing several times... the people in Bosnia just point at their neighbors and tell the army people that they will kill them as soon as the US leaves. Education would be a great way to promote diversity, but it is also un-american to force beliefs on people, especially where religion is involved. This whole situation is messed up.

I also feel like some sort of immediate retaliation should be taken against a terrorist group. Bin (Ben?) Laden has already done enough to the US, so we can just get on him, make Americans rest a little easier, and then figure out if he was responsible or not. Or maybe it's better for Americans to be really worked up about this so that the government gets the support that they need to take care of matters.

Any way you slice this, there are two sides. The people celebrating in Palestine don't know any better, or maybe it's we who don't know any better. This type of thing happen to them all the time. I don't celebrate it, but I don't really pay attention either. It's half a world away. Now that's it's in my backyard I feel quite differently. I really want to see retaliation now (read: immediate gratification) but know that's not defintely the best thing. I would, however, like to see whoever did this hung by the balls, upside down, covered in honey, feasted on by flies and other tortures. I am just wholly disgusted...
