I hope none of the "Fear Factor" folks know about those flies. That could bring a whole new dimension to "reality" television . . .
2003-02-25 08:36:48 AM
Have no fear. The killer bees and hobo spiders will put a swift stop to these flies.

'Man Eating Fly' was a typo, it was supposed to read 'Spanish Fly'

Biological warfare. Bomb Mexico instead.

Last month, the plant had its worst ever when a radiation machine malfunctioned. Millions of fertile flies were sent into the wild in Mexico and Panama. To date 50 cases of the disease have been found in animals in Panama and 44 in Chiapas.

The damage could escalate and take months to repair.

"It's a disaster for us. We're on national alert," said Alvarez. "The outbreak gives us an inkling of what could happen if the flies were used as a biological weapon in a terror attack. It could be very dangerous."

Accidentilly? What's that?

And don't worry about the man-eating flies. Isn't Mexico near Iraq or something?

"...And the worms ate into his brain"

What delightful breakfast-time reading.

an eye, for example, will turn into a grapefruit-sized festering wound of raw, pulpy flesh

or how about this gem:

the mixture bubbles with the gouging and squirming of around 20,000 worms per tray

In a word, EEEURGHH.

The man-eating fly factory's job is to produce sterile flies and introduce them into the population. Since the female flies only mate once, they want as many sterile males out there as possible so the species is eventually wiped out.

The ones that were accidentally released were actually released on purpose, it's just that they thought they were sterile but they weren't because the machine that sterilizes them (using radiation) malfunctioned and they didn't know.

Thanks for giving potential terrorists another idea folks!

Accident? Accident my ass. Just like the West Nile Virus.

WTF do people have against us that they have to release bugs at our borders? Someone releases West Nile on the East Coast, Man Eating flies on the Southern Borders, and what's next for the West Coast? Oh... Syphilis. At least you can get a shot for that. The others have death for a cure.

Doc, why is my penis orange?

Oh well, its back to my Cheetos and Pr0n!

Ewwww, gross! I had to stop reading this article about half way through. One of the sickest articles I've ever read.
2003-02-25 08:49:20 AM
So what you are telling me, is that Mexico has a factory that is creating biological weapons of mass desctruction?

Is there a chance they are providing these killer flys to terrorists?

/runs and gets Bush
2003-02-25 08:49:30 AM
Pick, that would mean that they read the Fark forums. I don't think we would allow that if we knew that certified terrorists were reading these boards. I for one would censor my posts so that they wouldn't be able to make sense of the stuff posted here.

2003-02-25 08:50:03 AM
At least now there'll be more demand for the sterile flies.

2003-02-25 08:51:11 AM
Boy, that will keep me from focusing today. Any bug that flys around me (wearing a warm coat, of course) is just gonna freak me out.

2003-02-25 09:04:42 AM
Good thing this didn't happen at the ebola-factory, or the flesh eating zombie factory, now that would have been a sticky situation!
2003-02-25 09:07:17 AM
Of course the mexicans "accidently" release them. I guess it was another break time when that happened.
2003-02-25 09:07:48 AM
and why haven't we bombed them yet?
2003-02-25 09:08:25 AM

Am I missing something here?

What is all this about disease????

I see the bit about man-eating flies, but that's not a disease, it's an insect, and it might even be considered a plague, as pests can be referred to, but disease?

What is the deal here? Are they VAMPIRE FLIES, sucking blood and creating an army beholden to a Vampire Fly master? Or are they wereflies, turning their fictims into fellow wereflies with their bite, unstoppable except by silver bullets (or at least Bob Seger in a Chevy Truck commercial)?

I just don't get it.

Breaking news:
Terrorist Threat Level raised to code RED.
Please gather duct tape, plastic sheeting, and fly-swatters and await further instructions.

I wonder it the "accident" is really an accident.
If you asked them they'd probably just swat you to the side.
"Larva us alone!" they'd say!
"Buzz off!"
I'd have to tell them "Hey, if the shoo fits..."
[/got nothing]

Those things sound worse then the botfly, but not as bad as the penishole fish.
2003-02-25 09:21:00 AM
Thought it was about a zipper factory and some obscure reference to getting one's pene snagged, but then read the article. The article is much scarier.
