I think the dog should bite each of his family members. Hard.

Dogs that bite should be put in a box and that box should be put in the bottom of the ocean. Holding the dog responsible for an old man falling out of bed, however, is whack.

He was just looking for trouble when he passed by a vendor with "betel nuts".

Mrs. Pfalsgraf surrenders.

Nope, you can't mess with those betel nut vendors. I know I don't. I was curious enough to see what one was though. They look like acorns.

Betel [which often includes Areca catechu(Arecaceae) seeds, Piper betle (Piperaceae) leaves, and Acacia, catechu(Fabaceae or Leguminosae) bark along with dozens of other flavorings and sweeteners] is used daily by perhaps 1 billion people. It is most common in Southeast Asia, but also in Africa and other places where Asian people have migrated. Lime is often added to hydrolyze and activate the alkaloids in the Areca catechuseeds. Cloves, tamarind, "spinkles", mint, an d other substances are added. Called "pan" by Indians. Copious salivation is produced. With frequent use, the teeth eventually turn brown or red.

Apparently, these people aren't aware of the difference between "actual cause" and "proximate cause".

Reminds me of the start of the Michael Moore's film "Bowling for Columbine" where the hunters dress a dog up in hunting clothes and give the dog a gun...

...real men cut and paste...

"Police in the Taiwanese county of Ilan arrested a dog on Sunday in connection with the death of an 85-year-old man,"

You know you're having a bad day when your lunch goes off and kills you.

Does this mean that I can sue my workplace for working me too hard, thus causing me to lose my fiance? Any good lawyers out there?
2003-02-18 12:06:17 AM
Lollygaggers! brought up a good point - will the dog be asked to testify?

I think they should arrest the betel nut guy for feeding the stray dog who bit the old man who walked past the betel nut vendor and went to the hospital and fell out of bed and rolled out of the window and onto the floor and then my poor meatball...never mind.

will it get the death sentence?

which we all know means... someones having dog for dinner tonight!

I'm in Taiwan. While it's fairly rare for animals to be arrested, it's not unheard of. What's more interesting is the frequency of odd claims for compensation. Just about ANY crimimal charge can be settled with an agreement to pay damages.
The justice system here is evolving at a rapid pace - especially since Taiwan gained admission to the WTO. Interesting to watch how the Chinese interpret and apply legal principles we consider to be settled questions of law.
There seems, at times, to be a relationship between judicial decisions and which episode of Law & Order was televised that week. Taiwan seems to want a legal system which applies Western legal principles in a culture that just doesn't operate according to those rules.
This was not my submission (mine never get posted), but I'll keep my eyes open for the settlement and submit it for your enjoyment.

I think the american way (sueing anything and anyone for abstract reasons) is starting to catch on to the other nations. This being a prime example. One more reason why i hate lawyers.

El_Swino, That dog can bite my leg any day
2003-02-18 12:14:43 AM
Did they read the dog is rights? Did they take his paw prints?
2003-02-18 12:16:08 AM

The betel nut babes are everywhere. They sit alongside all major (and most minor) roads, in plexiglass booths. Dressed in far less than your posted example, they really do constitute a traffic hazard.
Driving in Taiwan is risky at the best of times. Driving a motorcycle in traffic while passing beautiful women dressed in thongs can be deadly.
2003-02-18 12:16:10 AM
El Swino: she looks yummy.

interesting as to what the outcome will be. They are passing new laws in america where pet owners are responsible (that mean biaaatch and hubby in SF whos 2 dogs attacked the girl across the hall), and dogs will be treated as family members rather than objects. In the case of "its just a stray that I feed", just get a damn good lawyer to fight it out in court. Probably could go either way.

You know, I tried to do a GIS for the shifty-eyed dog from the Simpsons, and couldn't find ANYTHING. Is FOX a huge, throbbing, non-lubricated, THRUSTING dick w/regards to Simpsons fan sites?

No kidding, I always thought the betel nut grew on trees. Go figure...
2003-02-18 02:39:50 AM
Did the dog have shifty eyes?

'cause if he did, of course, everyone would suspect him...

Was it an ill-tempered dog?

a short-trigger-haired terrier?

I. Have. Nothing.
