foo monkey: xellas84:
There's a difference between uncomfortable (having to sit in a room with no furniture) and being forced to stay awake for 3 days (at which point you are borderline hallucinating and incoherent). I'm sorry, you cannot draw an equality between those two things.

I can draw a line because I've experienced the line. I've been kept awake for days without food. The only water I had was the ice cold water they poured on me to keep me awake.

It wasn't torture. It was very uncomfortable. I wasn't beated. I wasn't water boarded. I didn't have my testicles electrocuted.

It's just like earlier posters have pointed out: the best way to get someone to talk is to make them uncomfortable, then offer comfort. You don't torture them. You make life hard. If you're in a prison, you can't expect to get cupcakes and shoulder massages.

Go hug a terrorist and see where that gets you.

For starters, your experience is fundamentally different from theirs because at the end of the day, you can just 'fail' your training and get out of it. You are aware that you can END the 'discomfort' at any time you choose if it becomes too much. And those prisoners CANNOT. That makes it a different experience. If you were locked in a hostile environment with no way out and no assurance that it would ever end, or that they wouldn't escalate it to those other options without warning, you wouldn't call it discomfort anymore.

And I don't care if they talk or not. I want the Geneva Conventions followed. Those methods do not follow them. Call me an idealist, but I believe that the only thing that separates us from them is the fact that we hold ourselves to a higher standard. Do without the information if you can't get it without torture, even if it costs lives.

We signed on the dotted line that we wouldn't use these types of tactics even if it would cost American lives to forego them, and now we're trying to worm our way out by loopholes and 'clever reinterpretations' when we're being put to the test. That plain pisses me off and is an insult to the concept of American honor.

Hoopido: xellas84: If you asked me to put a gun to my own head and blow my brains out to defend it, I would without a second thought.

Oooo, Ahhhhh. Another marter. Would you kill someone else to defend it? Torture, rape, illegally imprison.

If you are going to throw insults, please at least run a basic spell check first.

And if you asked me to shoot the people doing the torture? Without a doubt, as I'm defending the treaty that my country agreed to. Rape or illegally imprison? I can't think of any possible scenario where that would be required.

xellas84: Once again, I'll ask this: Give me an example of the times waterboarding stopped a terrorist attack. People who support it repeatedly claim this to be true, I'm simply asking for proof that it actually happened.

If Obama hadn't stopped the release of the records, you'd have your proof.

Interesting claim, but until we see them then we don't know what's in them, now do we? In any case, as it stands there is no proof that torture works whatsoever, and ample pressure both internally and internationally, not to mention MORALLY, to NOT use it.

If something comes out that shows that torture not only works, but works repeatedly and reliably (as in this wasn't a single lucky break out of 500 sessions that gave nothing), then perhaps I might have to reconsider my stance on it's usefulness. However, that won't change the fact that we signed agreements stating that we, along with the other Geneva signatories, would NOT use these tactics. Bush & Cheney can 'reinterpret' all they want, but it's still illegal, and makes both of them war criminals.

captain_heroic44: Notice how none--none--of the torture apologists bother responding to this very obviously flawed argument.

When you get a terrorist with time sensitive information and want them to spill their guts, let me know. Until then, the proof will be locked away in the documents that Obama won't release.

Thune: The CIA has methods to determine whether information is credible or not.

Then why not just use those methods and skip the torture?

You're cute. How do you post while flailing around on the floor and crying?

Seems like there's one in every room. I can't even order lunch without someone screaming "stupid libs!" I hate conservatives more than Jehova's Witnesses at this point.

CBR ME ASAP: You: "torture is horrible and doesn't work"
Me: "what about sleep deprivation, culture shock, thirst, hunger, you admit that they work?"
You: "yeah they work, so they can't be torture"
Me: "but they seem to be torture"
You: "lalalalalalalala I can't hear you...it's only torture when it's physical....lalalalala I can't hear you"

Talk about putting words in my mouth. Nice try though. It's not torture.

CBR ME ASAP: From the UN Convention Against torture:

For the purposes of this Convention, torture means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information

I'm sorry, but being forced to sleep in a room that's too cold with no furniture and random noises keeping you awake, being fed crappy food at somewhat random and being forced into situations that you are culturally uncomfortable with can describe a great many situations, and you know what? None of them are "severe pain or suffering." Some of them are called good old-fashioned federal prison, a las vegas hotel, a homeless shelter, or a United Airlines flight.

Nice try though. You're still a failure.

Just because one has been annoyed by teh dreaded "zerg rush" on starcraft, doesn't make it funny thinly link it to any story about a potential war across a border.

The act of dredging up some meme is hardly funny just because the reference is known. Especially when there is nothing in TFA that makes it ironic.

If there is a story about say, HAmas stating they intend to attack ISreali settlements, having a headline of "Zerg Rush kekekeke" would not be funny there either.

It would be like if there was a vid of some protester leaving the throng, crashing straight into the line of cops and getting his arse kicked and some mod greenlit a headline that was just "Lerooooy Jenkins!!" That would not be funny either.

Settle down, Nancy. The headline is because Koreans love Starcraft, and the PRNK has a ridiculously huge, but technologically backwards, military.

At least that's what I thought.

2009-05-27 6:55:11 PM
OIC - since Starcraft is huge in Korea - that makes invading Koreans more appropriate as a "zerg rush" than say, Hamas dudes.

Although I suppose that it's the South Koreans that are zergs as I'm guessing few people in N. Korea have internet access - so they got it backwards

I still generally dislike MMO memes, but I guess this one is related after all...

/objection withdrawn

//still thinks people should ask themselves if there is something actually clever they can do with a headline before they go for teh reference

///by my own standards, I cannot come up with anything funny, so whatev...

It's funny because South Korea has elevated Starcraft into what amounts to a national passtime, like America with football or England with bad dentistry. It's topical and relevant to TFA because this idiocy was triggered by South Korea joining the US-lead pact. So they made a rather funny Starcraft reference due to South Korea's involvement, and their unnatural love for an extremely old (but still fun) RTS game.

Just because you don't actually keep tabs on things like that does not make the headline unfunny. To those of us who actually are aware of things like that, this was quite amusing, and made me chuckle for several minutes.

Burn14Me: speaking of which, when the fark is SC2 comming out? FFS they can kill a farker with wait on this shiat.

They broke it up into three parts and expanded the game to release one per year. It takes so long because they had to rewrite the entire story. First one out featuring the marines will be out in November according to Best Buy but I have seriously thought about boycotting it after waiting for this long. Besides that the requirements just to play it might be a little up there if you have an older PC. Warhammer 40000 is a good alternative.

That's Mandingo or something.

I don't know Starcraft from Stardust Memories.

But seriously. The DMZ is one of the last refuges in Asia for rare and wonderful wildlife (tigers, deer, cranes). When the stand-off ends, it gets over-run with hotels and microchip factories and gold-miners with degrees in 3-d animation.

Too bad North Korea doesn't have great astronomical observatories because you'd have to go to Nunuvut to get dark skies like that (and it's cold as the Hub of Hell up there). They were pretty good at astronomy in the XVth century give or take a few but Communist regimes are not big on star-gazing.

It's an ill wind that blows nobody well, or as they say in Japan, Banzai!

I think the regime in North Korea is really close to utter collapse. You can starve the masses only so long and then you run out of projectionists to keep the looney Belovèd Leader pacified.

Here's an idea: send Kim Jong-Il Director Woody Allen (who is now useless). Should keep him quiet for a few more years, by which time South Korea will have created the Matrix and can make Kim Jong-Il the hero of Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid and Casablanca.
