I think what you mean is: the most overrated non-musician ever.

I have no idea if any or all of this is true, but each person on this video have sucked at the flowing cock of Sid's being a farking tool, killing hos girlfriend, and dying in a spectacularly stupid manner. The "he was a smart bloke" BS seems thin given that.

More along the lines of Paris Hilton, famous for being shocking, behaving badly, and being famous.

I mean, named after a hamster...

Kind of the Sarah Palin of his time.

Once Sid showed up the band went to shiat.

You're a UK punk... You just hang out in UK and fark off all the time.. You have no job or prospects except crime and drugs. One of yer fellow miscreants has a band thats doing very well and they're making money.. The bass player leaves.. somebody asks you if you can play bass... having nothing better to do you say "sure" they give you a pass and show you a few fingering positions for the songs.. You kind of remember them.. enough to slack by on stage and not sound entirely awful.. it gets you enough money for drugs and you don't need to sell em anymore.. A steady stream of money is coming in and going in yer arm.. You now have a herion whore.. Nancy.. she clings to yer shiat all the farking time and get wasted on yer money.. The next few years are a blur and you only remember the times when you couldn't find any smack.. The bands still plays and the money still rolls in.. However you've become poison in the drug scene in NYC and can't find any herion as all the dealers you know tell you to fark off.. while fighting with Nancy over herion, you snap and stab the shiat out of her... she dies, You're arrested and a generation now identifies you as a punk rock star and legend despite the fact that you couldn't play bass worth a shiat.. so.. what would you have done different? the band kept him alive way before he should have been dead? or did it kill him with excess he wouldn't have otherwise known..?

I dont think it has ever had anything to do with his musical ability. Sometimes the entertainment industry is more about image than it is ability. Just because 16 year old kids wear his image on a shirt doesnt mean he is overrated.

THE SEX PISTOLS WERE A BOY BAND ASSEMBLED BY MCLAREN. none of them - NONE OF THEM - wrote songs. they were casted for a role. they're no more punk than nsync.

He IS the face of punk rock though - all attitude, no talent. I don't think anyone in the "punk movement" got further with less ability than he did.

Manufactured rock group.

John Lydon is a f*cking joke. The guy runs around pretending to be the definition of all things punk. All whilst being the only constant in that abortion of a band Public Image Limited. What a douche.

We don't even know any tunes yet.

What do you mean?
We had two rehearsals.

Besides,
it's just punk rock.

You don't have to
know how to play.

You just got to be a punk.
We could do that.

We got to get loaded
first, though.

Yeah, we should
get loaded.

Sid was the worst think to ever happen to punk in the 70', maybe ever. That ass-goblin was the poster child for the I'm-Into-Punk-For-The-Chance-Too-Look-Shocking-And-Cool crowd. Never cared about punk music, never cared about the punk movement, the punk message and what it meant, just cared about the punk shock value. His mother should have swallowed him. Fake bastard...

How many punks does it take to change a light bulb?

all of them - half to say that they were changing lightbulbs before it was "cool" and the other half to say that only posers change light bulbs.

I remember being so disappointed when I first heard the Sex Pistols. I was expecting to have my face ripped off, but ended up feeling like it was just loud, sloppily-played post-R&B, like a heavily retarded Rolling Stones or something.

Keep in mind that, due to my age, I'd heard Minor Threat and Black Flag before I heard the Pistols. Being already familiar with hardcore punk, the Pistols seemed quaint.

I later came to appreciate them a little more, but still think that pretty much every other punk band of their era, from the Damned to Buzzcocks, were infinitely better that the Sex Pistols, even if the Pistols were the impetus for those other bands.

Have you ever actually listened to "Never Mind the Bollocks" ??

It is actually pretty damned good.
(simple but good songs with good hooks)

Compare it to other 1977 releases.

REO Speedwagon,Journey,Billy Joel....etc....

Get the picture?

I had a girlfriend who was a Sex Pistols fanatic. I had to listen to their shiat constantly since we were living together.

I stand by my statement.

/I did like the Sex Pistols' Disco Medley, though

I'm here gunny thanks.

satanic you are 100% wrong. Look up your facts. They wrote all their owm songs, with Glen Matlock doing most of it.

This is not to defend Sid, he was a shiathead and the second worst thing that ever happened to punk rock. Malcolm was the first.

Source (new window)

The Clash, the Damned, Television, the Ramones, etc, etc. It's a common misconception to imply that the Pistols were railing alone out there in '77. And pretty much any of the aforementioned bands were better than the Pistols.

Some of them may have claimed that the Pistols inspired them to play their first show, but ultimately most of these bands still would have formed, and would have influenced subsequent bands, whether or not the Sex Pistols ever existed. In fact, I'd say that bands like Television, the Clash and the Ramones have had a much greater (and more deserved) influence on music than the Pistols.

Yes, "Hotel California" was the biggest US single in 1977. And Wings topped the charts in the UK. A lot of popular music sucked. But a lot of great music was being made as well, and compared to the Pistols' peers, in my opinion, "Never Mind the Bollocks" pales in comparison.

I remember hearing the Buzzcocks as a kid in the early 80's and being told by the cooler kids (with me, they're all cooler) that they were too popular to be punk - too "easy" to listen to, so I didn't really give them a good listen until just a few years ago. What a great band. Stupid cool kids and their Dead Kennedys and TSOL records.

Didn't those other bands at least write their own music though? If you like it that's great, but the Sex Pistols were frauds.

I just really love Jello's music. I dont really agree with his politics but I love the tunes. Especially the fact that he has worked with lots of other musicians I like and that he has managed to stay pretty original over the years.

TSOL are fun. Found out about them on Fark not to long ago and picked up a few albums. Solid cool stuff. I guess music, especially punk at this point, is a really fun hobby. None of my friends are into it but I like finding out about new bands and how different people play the style. Interesting to see how it changes depending on time and place.

THANK YOU!!!

that documentary puts Sid's craptacular playing into perspective. he was a terrible player, yes, but everybody who was interviewed said one or both of two things: he was great (considering his talent level, which was poor at best) until Nancy got him hooked on heroin, and he worked hard coontil the heroin) at learning how to play, even though he still sucked at it.

Huh? I don't think ANYONE rates him highly as a musician. Sex Pistols were never a great band, but they had their moments and created some fun songs. Bullocks is a good album. They are not the greatest punk band ever or anything. That title belongs to the Dead Kennedys.

As an incredibly average bass player, I have to say that if you can't even play quarter notes on the thing, you have no business being on stage

Yup, and Sid was a part of it, shiatty base playing and all (not on the record tho).

Sid Vicious is yet another example of image and attitude triumphing over musical ability in the music industry. The Sex Pistols are in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame - bands like Rush and Yes are not. It's about influence, not talent. And it doesn't require much talent to write and record a catchy pop song.
