"There's no attempt to make people think that this is Alberta," said Tom Olsen, director of media relations for Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach. "There's no attempt to mislead. That picture just fit the mood and tone of what we were trying to do."

*sniff sniff*
I smell bullsh*t.

I was expecting this to be another "clip art gone bad" story but to hear that they intentionally chose a photo from England puts it into moran territory.

I would have just gone with a pic of the beaches in Rio if you're gonna play that game.

Though the thought of women from Alberta in "dental floss" bikinis might have backfired.

/unwarranted cheap shot on Canadian women

Why couldn't they have used pics from one of Alberta's own ocean-front beaches?

They should have just taken some of the girls on 17th avenue in Calgary and put them in bikinis on top of Sulphur mountain. That'd be prettier than any British beach.

I don't like leaving my own country, Doug. And I especially don't like leaving it for anything less than warm, sandy beaches and drinks with little umbrellas in them.

We've got sandy beaches.

Yeah? Well who the fark wants to see 'em?

So we have some of the most beautiful scenery on Earth in the mountains, and they choose to use a picture from the BC coast? Really?

The more these incompetent politicians do, the more it looks like they are actively TRYING to not get re-elected. Unfortunately they are the defacto govt. her, sorta like North Korea. They could dump toxic waste in every Albertan's back yard, and they would STILL get reelected, with a majority.

England not BC, the little beach shown in the picture is a foreigner.

the Alberta government spent $25 million to show us pictures of a completely different place.

It's sad, really.

At least the Flames are making it interesting in the Flames/Blackhawks series.

Ya, I realized that after I hit submit. I've had to much coffee, and as I was reading the headline super speedy like, I saw "british" and assumed the next word was "Columbia". Because at least that is still in Canada and would have made a smidgen more sense.

I did read something about the Blackhawks though, that hasbeen true all year.

Once they get into a 'zone', they're almost impossible to keep off the scoreboard. The Flames haven't been playing badly, it's just that the Blackhawks have been playing better when it mattered (in those first few games anyways).

After 2 uneventful sweeps and 3 other series' threatening to go down quickly it's been fun to see at least one series threatening to get to game 7.

CitizenTed: Marketing Scum: is there any low they won't sink to and then lie about it?

No, they're one level below used car salemen for me. Talking to marketers actually makes my skin crawl. The one marketer at 3M I had to interface with on telecom project was named Chip, and he was a farking Chip.

Human waste, all of them.

I dunno, could be Lake Athabasca...which is only good for a beach for 3 weeks in July-August.

We have to do something to fool the tourists. Enough come over the border from the States with snow skis on their roof rack in July to make you wonder what anybody will believe....

It's brilliant, really.

Step 1: Spend $25 million on ad campaign to attract more tourism.
Step 2: Make sure everyone knows the beach is a foreign beach.
Step 3: Gets millions more worth of free advertisement in the form of "news stories"
Step 4: Profit!

/Either genius or really stupid...
//No "???" step. Fark South Park.

2009-04-23 6:02:03 PM
What's interesting is that they chose a to use beach scene at all (even an English one). Alberta is kind of land-locked, so unles it was supposed to represent a lake, then the marketing folks for Alberta Tourism are smoking some of BC's finest bud.

I love going to the mountains.

Lake Louise in particular. The view from in front of the big hotel there looks exactly like the postcard. EXACTLY. Never seen the water so clean, pure and I felt bad even thinking about jumping in (I didn't).

It's beautiful satire, if you ask me.

The girl is smiling -- almost mockingly -- at the attempt to convince her to visit Alberta.

Marketers not understanding what they are selling? Weird.
