'celebrated jumping frogs' I thought all frogs jumped - I've never seen a frog walk.

I live in Calaveras County. Please, don't dis the frogs. That and the residual glow of the gold rush (the "motherlode") is about all we have out here in the mountains.

But the frog jump is pretty boring. It's mostly a livestock show. Once you've seen one frog jump, the excitement kind of wears off. The real tourism money is in skiing.

Actually, we have some pretty amazing caverns. If you're ever near Sacramento/Stockton and don't mind a bit of a drive, come East to Murphys and check out Mercer Cavern. It's quite amazing. In the words of my brother, it was "better than Alcatraz". (He had just visited Alcatraz, if he was an inmate, that wouldn't be much of a compliment.)

JoelKatz if they taught the frogs to ski it would be cool!

Mr. Clemmons would have wanted it that way.

i remember when i was about 10 or 12 i cought a frog. instead of letting it go i threw it. i threw it about 20 feet. right at the street. what a mess. we used to shoot them with BB guns too. that was fun. tough little suckers they are. (hiding from PETA)

It is pretty funny out here. We have all kinds of stuff named after Mark Twain (Mark Twain Hall, for example) and all kinds of stuff named after the Celebrated Jumping Frog (the Jumping Frog Motel, for example). (Insert your own joke about that.)

Main Street in Angels Camp (right near the fairgrounds, affectionately known as 'Frogtown') has little plaques on both sides commemorating the various frogs that have won at Frog Jump. It's not as cool as Hollywood, but we try.

My frog can sing popular songs from the early twentieth-century, but the damn thing never makes a noise when anyone else is around ...
