I'd rather see much, much harsher penalties for drunk driving than have red light cameras be more prevalent.

he was the passenger, not his car

MIguy: Three people were killed but lets focus all the attention on the professional athlete that 95% of people have never heard of.

It could be worse. He could've survived the crash while others died and all the media coverage could've been about him anyway. That's how I remember the media coverage of the accident involving Robyn Regehr where two people died.

He's a rookie, so he probably wasn't making that much. You don't make the big bucks in the majors until you're a few years into a big league career.

This Is Bold Text: 1 hit, 1 run, 1 out. Angels down by 1.

Bravo

:(

I listened to the game last night and tuned out after the 6th inning (I thought the Angels were going to win). He was just a baby. What a terrible shame.

KNX broadcast part of his postgame interview from last night...I was really creeped out to hear him say, "I can't control what happens afterwards (referring to the Angels' loss)."

Omnivorous: shiat. I have tickets for tonights gane. I wonder if it will be canceled?

Game is cancelled. I don't have a link for you but they made the announcement during the Mariners-Twins game.

Yup. The Angels just had a press conference a few minutes ago.

Peaceboy: Angels have had some bad luck over the years, including a lot of car-related deaths... this list just showed up at the L.A. Times site:

-- ln 1968, relief pitcher Minnie Rojas was permanently paralyzed and his wife and three children were killed in an off-season car accident.

-- In 1972, Chico Ruiz, a 33-year-old utility infielder, died in a car accident.

-- 1974, Bruce Heinbechner, a promising, young, left-handed pitching prospect not unlike the right-handed Adenhart, was killed in a springtime car crash.

-- In 1977, 23-year-old shortstop Mike Miley, another top prospect, was killed in a preseason car accident.

-- In 1978, All-Star outfielder Lymon Bostock was driving in a car in Gary, Ind., stopped at a traffic light, when someone in another car shot and killed him.

-- In 1985, the two-year-old son of pitcher John Candelaria died after being in a coma for months following a swimming pool accident at his home.

-- In 1989, three years after throwing the fateful pitch that Dave Henderson hit for the ninth-inning home run, which turned the ALCS in Boston's favor, reliever Donnie Moore shot his wife, seriously injuring her, and then killed himself.

-- In 1992, the Angels team bus, traveling from Yankee Stadium to Baltimore, careened off the New Jersey Turnpike, injuring several members of the club, including Manager Buck Rodgers, who was hurt the worst.

God hates Angels?

This is really sad.

Happened right near the Fullerton Sonic Drive-in, which is the only one near me.

I'll go have a CreamSlush in Nick's honor.

When I heard this I became sick to my gut. I saw him pitch rookie ball when I was in high school, especially since he played in my hometown. Later, he played for the AAA team in the same city I go to college.

I was glad he got a spot on the Angels' rotation, but I'm really sad today.

/RIP Nick

It's too bad that we don't charge drunk drivers, who flee a scene that has resulted in a death, with murder. We should start doing this.

2009-04-09 2:47:10 PM
Being an Angels fan, he was one of the clubs top pitching prospects, and was eventually supposed to become one of the leagues elite pitchers. Its good they canceled the game, the team probably doesnt want to play right now anyway. Maybe this will give them something to play for, and maybe they will sweep the Red Sox this weekend?

2009-04-09 2:48:50 PM

chapman: People just accelerate through red light cameras, studies have shown accidents go up as a result.

Well, a number of things happen including accelerating through the light. Actually, many people probably forget that the red light cameras are there than accelerate through a yellow... but, cities often shorten yellow times, so as to catch more drivers. This helps create more accidents.

When they do know that a camera is a red-light camera, a lot of people will slam on their brakes when the light turns yellow, instead of simply traveling through. This creates a good number of the accidents at these intersections, as well.

yes but only lethal injection :/

The SOB who did this can fry in hell and yes, a DUI who kills someone should be charged with murder. Slimy, cowardly piece of crap. He deserves everything coming to him and more.

Sounds like the young man was an only child too. Just a few years ago his parents saw their son graduate HS, last year he made it to the big leagues, this year he makes the team and immediately after his first start, a quality one at that, he's taken from them. I feel for them as well as the families of the rest of the people taken too soon.

Wow. That is horrible. Sometimes news hits you in the gut. This is that time.
Hit and Run drivers should be taken somewhere and shot. Sorry for the anger. Heard of too many people who get hit and died and the driver gets away. One was a person I knew walking across the street.
Go Angels..Unless they meet the Indians in the playoffs

There is a law in California that mandates the Death Penalty if someone dies in the commission of a felony.

Even though Hitting-and-Running is a felony in California, this has yet to be used on fleeing motorists. Motorists generally are allowed to kill with impunity in Southern California.

The perp will probably get a probation and some community service.

2009-04-09 3:15:05 PM
This will be long. My apologies.

Longtime Angel fan since 1978 - 31 of my 38 years. Lived in OC since 99.

The accident took place in Fullerton, not too far from the stadium. Our Local Fox 11 said Nick left a club on Lemon Street, near Orangethorpe.

Nearby Lemon St are about 5 or 6 nice bars/clubs frequented by Cal State students, probably where Robert Gallo, the driver, came from.

Orangethorpe is a long straight road with no red light cameras. Gallo was probably trying to get to the 57 freeway to get back to Riverside, his listed home.

Gallo was going well over 60 mph. Adenhart's car looked like it had been in a compactor.

The press conference revealed Gallo's license was suspended for prior DUI. They are considering filing murder charges in addition to the hit and run and other DUI charges.

Thanks from Angel nation for all the notes of condolences.

/feel guilty - could have been me - on either side.

// please tell dick jokes, so I can stop crying

puffy999: It's too bad that we don't charge drunk drivers, who flee a scene that has resulted in a death, with murder. We should start doing this.

Actually, they can be. In California, repeat drunk drivers who kill someone can be charged with murder under the principle that gross indifference to the danger they pose to others can elevate to malice aforethought.

/RIP another lost Angel

bacongood: Nexus of the Crisis: Note to athletes, nothing good happens after midnight. Stay home.

/Condolences to his family and friends

it was a three hour game, i'm not sure about when it started, but it probably didn't start till at least 7. So the game didn't get over till well after 10. As the SP, he has a lot of stuff to do post game for his arm.

Chances are, he was heading home from the game.

I was making a gross over-generalization, but check the times when athletes get into trouble. It's usually in the 2am-3am range. They should be home beating their significant others at that time.

I had Darryl Kile on my team when he died. I waited a week to drop him.

/they should line up Gallo at home plate and let the Angels pitching staff have a go at him.

It's a start.

From the rest of Vlad's post, it sounds like Gallo should've been taken off the road a long, long time ago. There really isn't a way to do justice in cases like these, but making sure that asshole never touches another car in his life is a start.

Well played, sir, well played.

Vlad n Fig: Longtime Angel fan since 1978 - 31 of my 38 years. Lived in OC since 99.

Fan since 1974, thanks to Nolan Ryan, have lived within 1/2 hour of Dodger Stadium since 1975. It was tough being an Angels fan for a lot of those years.

/feel guilty - could have been me - on either side.

Hells yes. In my early 20's, I go to a buddy's house on Fridays and we'd sit and drink Jack Daniels shots, drink beer, snort coke and smoke pot 'til all hours. 25 years later, I'm amazed I never wiped out a family of six in a car crash, because I'd be in blackouts the whole time I was driving. Now, I won't drive if I've had so much as a sip.

/RIP NA

No relation. Little things about the story are hitting me. His dad flew out to watch him pitch last night. He got to spend time in the locker room today. No one should bury their kid.

I'm just a longtime fan whose first "real" memories are of Lyman Bostock's memorial game, and their loss to Baltimore in 79 - F'in Doug Decinces. My family had tickets to the 86 world series.

I know it's retarded to care so much. Baseball helps me forget about real life.

I lost my 3 kid having 35 year old cousin to Lou Gehrig's Disease ( cue Alannis) in Dec and my uncle to prostate cancer 3 weeks ago.

No offense taken. But if you like the Sox, you are a prick anyway. : )
