Sadly hit and run doesn't mean baseball in this case. Hope he's up there smokin' a cigar with Babe Ruth right now.

Started to make a lame "Angels in the Outfield" joke but...

Damn, that's sad.

Horrible news. This A's fan will be pouring out a 40 in honor of Nick and the Angels.

fark, thats sad. Hopefully he wasn't drinking and driving.

I was also hoping he'd have a breakout year like Saunders last year and Weaver the year before.

Combine this with the fan who was killed at the stadium earlier this week, the Halos are off to a rough start.

wow that is tragic and sad

I'm rooting for the Angels for the rest of the year

2009-04-09 12:08:06 PM
This is terribly sad, and senseless. I have observed people become worse and worse about running red lights and forcing their way through yellows over the course of my lifetime, no matter where I have lived. I lost an ex-girlfriend to this, though she was a passenger in the vehicle that ran the light. Something I would urge everyone to consider when they believe themselves to be in a hurry.

Kid looked good, too.

2009-04-09 12:08:31 PM

Wow. Fuentes has to feel terrible about blowing this kid's shot at a W in his start.

2009-04-09 12:11:14 PM
I was going to sub this with the headline "Rookie not so thrilled to be joining the Angels". That seemed like a Fark-wrthy headline. But still, that sucks. Poor kid.

2009-04-09 12:11:23 PM
How about a pre-game ceremony/public execution of the driver that caused the wreck and fled?

2009-04-09 12:12:08 PM
This is tragic. I actually watched him pitch last night.

1 hit, 1 run, 1 out. Angels down by 1.

2009-04-09 12:13:37 PM
Man, that's a lot of deaths from one run red light. I hope they catch the asshole driver.

/RIP

2009-04-09 12:14:02 PM
Since December, I have witnessed 2 hit and runs. One of which I was able to follow the guy and corner him in someone's yard. I am sick and tired of hearing about these jackasses on the road.

2009-04-09 12:14:06 PM
Sooooo..... 15 day or 60 day DL?
I had him on my fantasy team.

Just kidding, I don't play fantasy baseball.

LOL that's way better than this headline. My reaction to "the ultimate loss" and this being fark was that he'd lost his penis. I guess he still did, in a way.

TomTucker: How about a pre-game ceremony/public execution of the driver that caused the wreck and fled?

I would watch that but what about a public stoning instead and let the families of the victims take it out on the scumbag

it was a three hour game, i'm not sure about when it started, but it probably didn't start till at least 7. So the game didn't get over till well after 10. As the SP, he has a lot of stuff to do post game for his arm.

Fark. 22-year-old pitcher, finally looking like he was going to get some serious time in the big leagues, and killed in Fullerton of all places by a farking drunk driver. Probably the biggest tragedy to hit the organization since Donnie Moore. So sad.

2009-04-09 12:44:47 PM
Sad. A promising young man with family and friends who were most likely cheering him on while he played a game he loved, taken away from those people and his teammates by an asshole who couldn't wait two minutes for a red light and who fled the scene of a triple homicide instead of owning up to his douchebaggery and terrible decision. I'll be rooting for the Angels tonight.

Ahh yes, because a drunk driver is going to realize he's approaching a RLC intersection and stop. Ohh wait, that's right he's drunk and unable to respond correctly/quickly to his surroundings. The guy was caught, so A RLC would not have made a difference in this except for getting photos of the wreck.

As Deputy Police Chief Dwayne T. Robinson might say, "Jesus Christ! ... Angels are gonna need another pitcher, I guess."

This is most likely the case. I have a friend in baseball and whenever I meet him after the game, in the family room, it is usually 2-3 hours after the game has ended before we leave the stadium.

Why? They are a much better idea than photo radar on the freeway, which i deplore. If you are just driving a bit too fast on the highway, there's a chance that you're not an asshole. Running a red light, well, that makes you a complete asshole who deserves punishment.

People just accelerate through red light cameras, studies have shown accidents go up as a result. The superior option is longer yellow lights, but those don't make any money for the city.

What a senseless tragedy, Adenhart looked like he was starting to show why he was a top prospect in the organization. The thought of having your career dreams within your grasp, then having it all taken away by a random idiot is heartbreaking.

As sad as this all is, my first thought was, "I wonder how many fantasy baseball players are pissed right now." I don't even play fantasy baseball, but I know how fantasy sports players can be rather short-sighted at times when it comes to these kinds of situations.

Still very sad, especially given his age and apparent potential.

Angels have had some bad luck over the years, including a lot of car-related deaths... this list just showed up at the L.A. Times site:

-- ln 1968, relief pitcher Minnie Rojas was permanently paralyzed and his wife and three children were killed in an off-season car accident.

-- In 1972, Chico Ruiz, a 33-year-old utility infielder, died in a car accident.

-- 1974, Bruce Heinbechner, a promising, young, left-handed pitching prospect not unlike the right-handed Adenhart, was killed in a springtime car crash.

-- In 1977, 23-year-old shortstop Mike Miley, another top prospect, was killed in a preseason car accident.

-- In 1978, All-Star outfielder Lymon Bostock was driving in a car in Gary, Ind., stopped at a traffic light, when someone in another car shot and killed him.

-- In 1985, the two-year-old son of pitcher John Candelaria died after being in a coma for months following a swimming pool accident at his home.

-- In 1989, three years after throwing the fateful pitch that Dave Henderson hit for the ninth-inning home run, which turned the ALCS in Boston's favor, reliever Donnie Moore shot his wife, seriously injuring her, and then killed himself.

-- In 1992, the Angels team bus, traveling from Yankee Stadium to Baltimore, careened off the New Jersey Turnpike, injuring several members of the club, including Manager Buck Rodgers, who was hurt the worst.

RIP River Rat...

For clarification, I saw him pitch in High School at Williamsport (MD) High. Since I went to Clear Spring just up the road, and Williamsport is right on the Potomac, they were called "river rats"... Yeah anyway, it's a damn shame he got snuffed out right as he was finally going to make it big. He messed up his shoulder right out of HS and had obviously managed to overcome the injury and ensuing surgery. Damn shame...

When I heard this I became sick to my gut. I saw him pitch rookie ball when I was in high school, especially since he played in my hometown. Later, he played for the AAA team in the same city I go to college.

I was glad he got a spot on the Angels' rotation, but I'm really sad today.

Being an Angels fan, he was one of the clubs top pitching prospects, and was eventually supposed to become one of the leagues elite pitchers. Its good they canceled the game, the team probably doesnt want to play right now anyway. Maybe this will give them something to play for, and maybe they will sweep the Red Sox this weekend?

chapman: People just accelerate through red light cameras, studies have shown accidents go up as a result.

Well, a number of things happen including accelerating through the light. Actually, many people probably forget that the red light cameras are there than accelerate through a yellow... but, cities often shorten yellow times, so as to catch more drivers. This helps create more accidents.

When they do know that a camera is a red-light camera, a lot of people will slam on their brakes when the light turns yellow, instead of simply traveling through. This creates a good number of the accidents at these intersections, as well.

The SOB who did this can fry in hell and yes, a DUI who kills someone should be charged with murder. Slimy, cowardly piece of crap. He deserves everything coming to him and more.

There is a law in California that mandates the Death Penalty if someone dies in the commission of a felony.

Even though Hitting-and-Running is a felony in California, this has yet to be used on fleeing motorists. Motorists generally are allowed to kill with impunity in Southern California.

The perp will probably get a probation and some community service.

This will be long. My apologies.

Longtime Angel fan since 1978 - 31 of my 38 years. Lived in OC since 99.

The accident took place in Fullerton, not too far from the stadium. Our Local Fox 11 said Nick left a club on Lemon Street, near Orangethorpe.

Nearby Lemon St are about 5 or 6 nice bars/clubs frequented by Cal State students, probably where Robert Gallo, the driver, came from.

Orangethorpe is a long straight road with no red light cameras. Gallo was probably trying to get to the 57 freeway to get back to Riverside, his listed home.

Gallo was going well over 60 mph. Adenhart's car looked like it had been in a compactor.

The press conference revealed Gallo's license was suspended for prior DUI. They are considering filing murder charges in addition to the hit and run and other DUI charges.

Thanks from Angel nation for all the notes of condolences.

Actually, they can be. In California, repeat drunk drivers who kill someone can be charged with murder under the principle that gross indifference to the danger they pose to others can elevate to malice aforethought.

Stunning news. It's really so senseless. I don't drive a car much, I prefer riding a motorcycle. I have become so hyper-aware on the road, especially at so called, "stop lights."

This type of "accident" can happen to anyone, anytime. People blow through lights all the time, and most of the time it has nothing to do with alcohol or drugs. It is typically due to inattention, fatigue, and pursuit of non-driving activities - like texting.

When you are on a motorcycle, and you want to survive, you pay a lot of attention to these type of activities, since there are no distractions, and the inherent danger of motorcycling is tattooed on most long time riders brains.

Is their a point? Pay attention out on the road. Even in a case like this where a drunk driver blows through a red light, you can still react, if you pay attention, and be an active driver.

And now turn him over to the Governator to give him a beatdown. I have always held the belief that drivers of SUVs or minivans thought of themselves as immortal. (Obscure reference?) Of course I do test this theory by prompty driving the speed limit on a two-lane road, not slowing down when they pull out in front of me at an intersection where I clearly have the right-of-way, and if I'm on a multi-laned highway, taking my own sweet time in passing somebody. I did this today, and the guy behind me was PISSED! He threw his hands in the air, he tried to run me over (literally!), but I feel drive safe, stay alive. And why be in a hurry to go anywhere? My father lives 1,000 miles from me and is in poor health. Do you think I'm gonna drive at 100 MPH to get there ASAP if he's in the hospital? Nope, I'd rather not have my family have MY funeral or get myself pulled over by cop after cop after cop for that distance.

No, you don't always have time to react. I can't believe you're even going there. Sometimes you can react, yes. But look at that car. It looks like the top was sheared off. Did it roll? did it get sent into the air? Do you know how fast the other guy had to be going to cause that?

You may have time to see it coming, and your muscles may even jump into action, but the car takes time to respond. Simply jerking the wheel doesn't teleport the car to some spot 10 feet away. Brakes don't stop you on a dime. you can get the car turning, but tbat may do little more than change the angle of impact, and that new angle of impact could actually be very bad for you.

The reaction needs to be before you enter an intersection, not at the last minute when you just by chance see something flying at you from the corner of your eye.

Always slow down for intersections - let off of the gas and start looking both directions. If you're only going 25-30 into an intersection, (and assuming it's not a blind intersection), you should be able to see 30 foot in either direction for what's coming and most likely stop with space left over. If you have little or no visibility, then really slow down.

Always drive defensively - think of every other driver on the road as a complete idiot, because they most likely are.

Not to say any of this would have made a difference in this instance - the drunk loser who caused this takes 100% of the blame. But, it may make a difference to you someday.

/ and maybe then you'll reward me with a TF membership!
